As Elizabeth mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, the good people at Field Roast Grain Meat, Co. generously donated some vegan grain meat for the chimp’s Thanksgiving Dinner. Thanks so much Field Roast Grain Meat, Co.! The chimps really enjoyed it!

CSNW featured in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine
Really great article: http://www.seattlemet.com/issues/archives/articles/chimpanzee-sanctuary-northwest-1209/
It’s hot off the presses (or at least recently uploaded to the world wide web) and the print version should be all over the Seattle area soon. Please share on your Facebook and Twitter pages and send to all of your contacts (you can do that by clicking “Email” or “Share This” at the top of the article when you go to the link). It not only tells the story of CSNW, but also the broader plight of chimpanzees in captivity.
I only wish Jamie knew how famous she is.
Negra and “night bags”
Each night after dinner, we give the chimpanzees treats in the form of “night bags.” These are brown paper bags with a small amount of sugar-free cereal, dried fruit, salt-free nuts, seeds and sometimes dried pasta or other goodies. Our beloved volunteers make these bags up 21 or so at a time to ensure we have a supply for a few nights. Negra in particular likes this snack and sometimes asks for her night bag before dinner is even over. She asks by loudly clapping and sometimes extending an arm out. One night last week when J.B. was serving dinner, I snapped a few photos of Negra making her request, then enjoying her night bag.
Apron Activists benefit dinner
The Apron Activists, made up of the wonderful folks at the vegan mini-mall in Portland, OR (SweetPea Baking Company, Food Fight, Herbivore, Scape Goat Tatoo) and Isa Chandra Moskowitz, chef and author of the best vegan cookbooks out there, are putting on a benefit dinner for the sanctuary Friday night in PDX.
The dinner is sold out, but don’t let that stop you from drooling over the menu. Check it out on the Post Punk Kitchen blog, and browse some of the great recipes while you’re there.
I’ll see you there if you managed to get your ticket before it was sold out!
Self-recognition
There are a handful of species who have demonstrated self-recognition, and chimpanzees are among this handful. Of the Cle Elum Seven, Foxie in particular enjoys mirrors.
Missy’s Birthday
After Jackie’s great video post yesterday of Missy and her socks, I wanted to be sure to let everyone know that we’ll be celebrating Missy’s birthday on August 23rd – less than a week from today! Cle Elum Seven friend Robbi will be delivering some special gift packages, and of course we’ll be giving Missy all of the things she loves (like lots of socks!!) on Sunday. It will be her first birthday celebration at the sanctuary. We do not know her exact day of birth, so, with the help of friends, we chose a day for her celebration. We can’t wait to share her day with you!
