George and Cy: Connecting on The Bray

October 24, 2025 by Kelsi

Introductions are unpredictable. You never quite know what the chimps are going to do, how they’ll react, or how they’ll respond to neighbors making noise (and yes, sometimes the neighbors do heighten the situation). But that’s the point of these meet-ups — to give them the opportunity to work through situations or conflicts and gain more confidence as we build this group, especially for George.

Last Saturday, we did an all day introduction with George and Cy. We wanted to give them more time to work through different scenarios and bond together. Bonding with Cy will be a critical part of this introduction process. Cy is an exceptional leader, and I think he’ll really help show George the ropes, helping him build confidence and engage in typical chimp activities, like grooming. We also want George to understand the hierarchy and recognize Cy as the leader. And what better way to do that than to give them extended time together and introduce them to a new space they’d have to navigate side by side? So, we gave Cy and George access to the chute and The Bray!

We are so incredibly proud of George. He was actually the one encouraging Cy to go out onto The Bray, while Cy seemed a bit apprehensive. Since this was a space they hadn’t shared together before, it caused a moment of uncertainty for Cy. However, George beckoned for Cy to come — and he did! This was a big step for them in bonding and building a friendship. I think Cy has really grown fond of the little guy! As a side note, Cy was also really distracted because he really wanted to hangout in front room 7. It’s his favorite room because you can see so much in the chimp house, Cy hasn’t had access to it in a long time!

The week before, we had tried giving George and Gordo access to the same space, but Gordo, being the cautious soul he is, thought there was a catch and refused to go outside with George. George was so patient and tried hard to encourage him, but Gordo just couldn’t do it. However, as you saw in Tuesday’s blog, Gordo also had an all day introduction with George, and eventually, he found the courage to run out onto The Bray with him.

Setting up introduction days is a lot of work. Behind the scenes, getting the chimps to shift and move where they need to be can be quite challenging. Not everyone is always eager to cooperate (cough, cough — Honey B, Terry, and now Rayne). Sometimes, if the chimps don’t shift, it can really affect the whole day, and we have to get creative with our shifting plans. Mentally, it can be extremely taxing.

However, that makes it all the more rewarding to witness these milestones. George has been alone for over two years since his companion at his previous home passed away. Watching George beckon Cy over and seeing them embrace on The Bray brought tears to my eyes. George has had to explore much of his new surroundings alone, so it strikes a deep chord to see him finally sharing the experience with another chimp. Moments like these really fill our cups and remind us that this is the heart of our work- providing opportunities, offering choice, and fostering meaningful social connections.

Bray & Play – George Continues to Make Progress!

August 18, 2025 by J.B.

When rescued chimpanzees arrive at the sanctuary, there’s a lot to be intimidated by: unknown caregivers, wide open spaces, and unfamiliar chimps all around. So we try to take things one step at a time. This morning, George went on the Bray at the same time that his neighbors were outside for the very first time and he handled it like a champ! PLUS: Bonus footage of George’s 2nd meeting with Terry!

We also celebrated the anniversary of Honey B, Willy B, and Mave’s arrival today. Can you believe it’s been six years? Actually, when Willy B wakes us all up in the middle of the night with his cage-rattling displays, it sometimes feels like he’s been here for 60. But for the most part, it seems like they just got here yesterday. The party forages included pasta with veggie sauce, Dixie cups filled with juice-soaked chow, berries, tomatoes, figs, and endives. I wasn’t able to to snap too many photos of the guests of honor, or anyone for that matter, but here are a few.

Busy Day Photo Round Up!

August 5, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Today was a busy day at the sanctuary with several staff meetings, but we had time to snap a few photos for you all! Enjoy!

We will be celebrating our favorite mother-of-all-dolls, Foxie, this coming Friday for her 49th birthday! Katelyn has a lovely party planned that, of course, includes many, many new dolls!

Terry decided to enjoy his lunch outside, with a view.

Gorgeous Annie relaxing in the Greenhouse. The chimps have been taking full advantage of the mild weather today. We had some sudden cloud cover just as we were preparing to close off the outdoor habitats for the evening, and everyone went out to enjoy it! Now everyone is having dinner, and settling in for the evening.

Be Bold, Be Brave

July 23, 2025 by Kelsi

Today, George had the chance to venture out onto the Bray once again. Watching him explore this new part of his world serves as a reminder of just how remarkable he truly is. He seems to be fearless—even though he’s nervous, it doesn’t seem to hold him back. Considering he’s never had a space like this before, seeing him go out on his own is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

You will notice at the end of the video, George is laying down on a structure. For me, this is a great sign of how much more at ease he’s becoming on the Bray.

When I think back to Willy B and Cy’s group during their first few outings, there was always someone there to offer reassurance and encouragement. But George? He’s learning all of this on his own, and it’s truly impressive to watch him face new experiences with such bravery. So much has changed for George, and he has grown exponentially since arriving here, but it’s his resilience and courage that allow him to embrace the unknown and stay curious every step of the way.

Gordo Turns 37!

July 19, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Today is Gordo’s birthday! There is so much to love about Gordo Chimpanzee. He is quirky and fun, always keeping us on our toes (quite literally) with games of chase filled with bunny hops. He also loves to be tickled with a long-handled spoon, and will come to insist he be involved if you dare tickle someone else in his presence. He is a box enthusiast, and can often be found sitting inside even the smallest of boxes. He doesn’t like to get his feet dirty, and while he prefers to be served his meals in the greenhouses, he will almost always bring something with him to sit on so his feet aren’t on the ground (this could be rolling up a large ball to sit on, pulling up a box to sit in, or even perching on top of a single page from one of Cy’s magazines). He enjoys spending time out on The Bray, and in the quiet moments of the day can often be found grooming with his friend Terry. While he is not the first one you’d think of as a protector for his group (that would be Cy!), I still think of him as such, but perhaps in less obvious ways. He is there to destroy a magazine for Cy if one of the pictures is scaring him, and the first one to spit on caregivers in defense of his friends when we do anything he perceives as weird (such as laser therapy for wounds). We are so lucky to get to know and love Gordo! I’m linking a past blog video of one of my favorite Gordo memories here, in case you need more Gordo in your day.

Gordo’s birthday was filled with some of his favorite things…boxes, LOTS of smoothies, and mangoes. Many thanks to Paulette Wrisley for sponsoring Gordo’s birthday today! Enjoy the many faces of Gordo enjoying his birthday mangoes!

We went with a Christmas in July theme thanks to a recent donation of wrapping paper from one of our generous donors. We wrapped Gordo’s boxes with wrapping paper, and he (and his friends) enjoyed opening their gifts.

Jamie’s group enjoyed celebrating Gordo’s birthday as well with a lunch forage consisting of lots of tiny smoothies, pineapple, cherries, sugar snap peas, mini peppers, and grape tomatoes. Foxie was the first one out on Young’s Hill and snagged a smoothie for herself!

Rayne and Snow

January 11, 2025 by Krissy Brasfield

On November 17th, 2024, we had our first snowfall!  (I’ve been waiting for my opportunity to share this sweet video with you and today is the day!)

Rayne was very excited to get outside, but was unsure of the snow on the decking of the chute.  She made it to the end of the chute without touching her feet to the snow, but then she had a decision to make.  Will she brave the cold snow on her warm feet to do a little exploring?  You probably already know the answer.  That Raynie is quite the explorer!
