Like Mother, Like Daughter

January 9, 2026 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Prior to working at CSNW, both Caregiver Sabrina and I worked at Chimp Haven in Louisiana, where Negra’s daughter Heidi (and more than 300 other chimpanzees!) live. Being able to know and love both Heidi and Negra is extra special and so interesting to see many similarities (and some differences) between the two. I was excited when coming to CSNW to meet Heidi’s mom, and often see glimpses of Heidi in her mom, Negra.

Heidi on the move.

Negra on the move

Negra is the Queen for a reason! She is known for holding her caregivers to high standards. Don’t serve her food too fast, but you also better not serve it too slow! Now dance! We gladly follow our Queen’s demands. Negra has many quiet, sweet moments with her caregivers too, including many, many kisses. Within her group, Negra is generally quieter and not overly involved in conflicts, unless they bring the fight to her (looking at you, Burrito!). She can often be found playing with Burrito or resting in one of her large, well-built nests.

Heidi has friends in high places, and is more assertive when drama unfolds in her group. She can hold a grudge if she needs to with other chimps, and though she is small, she is mighty! She is easy going with her caregivers and very sweet. We didn’t have physical contact with the chimps at Chimp Haven (we played and groomed using a long-handled spoon), but I think she would give lots of kisses much like Negra, given the opportunity. During the time I knew her, Heidi did not make or use elaborate nests like Negra. Physically, I think it is clear that Negra has some strong genes!

I’m so grateful both Heidi and Negra are enjoying sanctuary life, and for the opportunity to know and love them and the many other chimpanzees that have shaped me both as a caregiver and a human. What an honor it is.

Front Rooms of Fun

January 4, 2026 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

If you’ve been following us for long, you may know that the front rooms are a beloved spot for both lounging and activities for the chimps living on Cy’s side of the building. There’s FR 7, which is the perfect spot for spying on the humans doing work in the foyer. FR 6 with a food chute to perch on and keep eyes on happenings in the clinic (if you’re Honey B, it’s also a fun activity to have your caregivers open the door to the clinic for you on command!), and FR 5 which connects to the chute and is slightly larger – meaning more room for activities! When George first arrived and into the initial steps of his introduction to Cy’s group, he was living in the front rooms with access to other areas on different days. Because George was occupying the front rooms, the rest of the chimps not being introduced to him weren’t able to visit the front rooms, until just recently! As the introduction group got larger, George and friends moved into a larger space (the playrooms and greenhouses), giving the rest of the chimps the opportunity to rotate through being in the front rooms. I don’t think anyone is more thrilled about this than Honey B!

In today’s blog video, see how Willy B, Honey B, and Mave are making the most of their time in their beloved front rooms!

A Very CSNW Christmas (Cy’s Edition)

December 26, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Yesterday we celebrated Christmas in true CSNW style, with a feast of chimpanzee holiday favorites (celebration roast, corn, baked russet potatoes, green beans, rolls, sparkling cider, and some very cute lettuce snowmen) and many carefully wrapped presents. Huge thanks to all of the volunteers and staff that planned and prepared the festivities, and our wonderful donors that sent in lots of gifts for the chimpanzees! In today’s blog video, see George and friends get in the Christmas spirit, and come back for one more Christmas blog tomorrow! In case you missed it, see how Jamie’s group enjoyed their day here.

Rest, Relaxation, and…Pomegranates?

November 28, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

After a food and fun filled Thanksgiving celebration yesterday, the chimps are enjoying a laid-back day today. It is overcast and chilly, which has me feeling pretty envious of Negra who has spent much of her day in a very cozy blanket nest. Jamie too was tucked into an elaborate nest in an adjacent room as she supervised Anna and I cleaning her playroom. After a relaxing morning, we added some excitement to the day by serving whole pomegranates with lunch. Enjoy a photo series of Dora savoring every last bit of her pomegranate!

I hope you are also able to rest and relax (and enjoy a pomegranate of your own, if that’s your thing!) as you recuperate from your holiday festivities!
