Afternoon Fun with Gordo and George

May 22, 2026 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey 11 Comments

We recently celebrated George’s first anniversary of sanctuary living! From our first blog announcing his arrival, his first ventures into the chute then the greenhouse and finally the Bray, meeting new friends for the first time (his now group-mates Cy, Terry, Rayne, Gordo, Lucky, and Dora, as well as Mave and Willy B), then living full time in his new group and navigating the social intricacies of chimpanzee life, mastering the art of nest building, his first sanctuary Christmas, and his first birthday in sanctuary, George has accomplished so much in his short time here, and there’s so much more to come!

It has been incredibly rewarding to watch him build relationships with other chimps throughout the introduction process, and even more rewarding to watch him live life within a social group. To say he and his progress have impressed us would be an understatement. Cy and Rayne have been his greatest teachers, as we had hoped an anticipated before beginning the introduction process. What was unexpected, but has been the best surprise, was his fast friendship with Gordo. In today’s video, come along for an afternoon of fun with Gordo and George!

Watched with a grin the whole time. Such exuberant fun- really uninhibited towards the end! Loved George’s leg adornment. And so fascinating to watch Dora!

Thanks Ellen. What a fun filled video! Gordo!! It is so fantastic seeing Gordo having crazy fun with George. Can’t imagine how this makes you feel, must be an extraordinary thrill after all your hard work. The candle on top for everyone!

George! I had no idea he was so stylish and savvy. If it were Jamie‘s sporting two head bands tied together, I would know she was the person who knotted them into one. So I have to ask, did George tie those two headbands together and choose to sport one of them on his thigh, making the second more colorful headband the embellishment? Or did you supply them tied together? Either way, George is raising the sanctuary fashion bar with today’s look!! The headbands give him an almost pirate look. I can’t stop laughing over it.

George is so cute and he was ready for battle with his Ninja leg band. Seeing him so comfortable with Gordo and Gordo letting George build up his skills was priceless. And Dora overseeing was adorable.
I kept expecting to see Cy who always seems to be close by but happy George has been accepted so heartedly.

Oh, George was stylish as usual! I love that these two have each other.
And Rayne at the end, ever the babysitter, telling George to take it down a notch! Wonderful that she’s taken a maternal interest in sweet George!

George and Gordo were certainly having a ball. Dora and Rayne seemed like referees at a wrestling match!
