Fall Into The Season

September 30, 2025 by Chad de Bree

The mornings are becoming foggier.

The grass is growing with a golden hue.

And the days are becoming shorter and nights becoming darker.

As the ravens begin to claim their roost in the barn on the gloomy days, the signs of Fall is here with one of the biggest celebrations at CSNW on the horizon…

Happy Birthday, Becky, from Tobin!

September 29, 2025 by Katelyn

Thank you, Tobin, for sponsoring a day of sanctuary in celebration of your friend, Rebecca Babcock on her birthday!

“To my dear friend, Becky: On this 50th anniversary, I have no doubt that your mother would be pleased at the adult you became, as a mother and grandmother, and as a person with a steadfast moral conscience. And, were she to have been able to visit your house and taken notice of the portraits of Dora, Mave, Jody, Burrito, and other chimpeople of distinction, I believe that your mother would be impressed and approving of the company you keep.”

Happy Birthday, Becky! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Medicinal Harvest

September 28, 2025 by Diana

Humans prefer to make rosehip tea or pulverize the rosehips into a powder and take them as capsules.

We love that the chimpanzees take them in their natural state.

In addition to the wild flowers, I randomly (and quite late in the season), planted sunflower seeds and some marigold starts to accompany a few tomato plants. I think Missy might be onto the fact that there are tomatoes in this garden. Hopefully we can harvest a few before the weather turns cold!

Can you believe it’s almost October?! Lots of good things happen in October, starting with HOOT! (the online auction opens in just a few days and the in-person event is Friday!), and ending with the most important day of the year: Jamieween.

Happy harvesting – whatever that means to you!

A New Food Puzzle

September 27, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

At the end of last year, I shared some of the new food puzzles we were able to create for the chimpanzees thanks to the support of our generous donors in last year’s Comfort & Joy Online Auction. In that post, I promised a follow-up on the new puzzles I was creating, and here it is!

These spinning slow feeders have been a huge hit with the chimpanzees so far. We smear small amounts of different high value food items (like mashed banana, peanut butter, and sugar free pudding) on each layer of the puzzle, and the chimps must spin the different layers around to be able to access all of the food within the puzzle. See Cy’s group (and George) work on them in today’s video. Thank you to Jamie R. for these wonderful new puzzles!

Celebrating Mave on the Other Side of the Building

September 26, 2025 by Krissy Brasfield

Yesterday, you got to see Mave celebrate her 36th birthday!  Did you miss it?  If so, check it out here!

Today, you get to see what everyone was doing on the other side of the building!  Jamie, Missy, Annie, Burrito, Foxie and Negra got to venture out onto Young’s Hill, their 2 acre outdoor habitat, to forage for all of the birthday goodies!  They had coconuts, Dole Whip, baby heads of iceberg lettuce, corn and mini peppers.  YUM!  (No mango for this group due to Annie’s mango allergy.  Bummer!)

It was quite windy outside, but most everyone braved the wind gusts to participate in the party treats!  Can you guess who DID NOT brave the wind?

Mave on her 36th birthday!

September 25, 2025 by Anna

Mave’s enthusiasm for good birthday treats is truly infectious. Happiest of birthdays to one of our floofiest sanctuary residents.  Many thanks go out to all our staff and volunteers for pulling off her big day, as well as Paulette Wrisley who sponsored today in honor of Mave!
