Shared Experiences

August 24, 2025 by Diana

I had a moment last week.

It was the first time that Jamie’s group was in their outdoor habitat, Young’s Hill, while George had access the other habitat, the Bray.

J.B. shared a video on Monday in his blog post.

I was in the human corridor in between the habitats. Missy and Foxie began walking along the fence where I was standing as George ran outside. I was thinking about Foxie having just turned 49 and Missy’s 5oth in just a few days.

I was thinking about the last seventeen years we’ve spent together and all of the experiences we’ve shared. Together, we’ve gone through the same things that I’ve gone through with human friends and family. There have been days of worry and days of pure elation. There have been some scary times when we’ve done our best to comfort and reassure each other. We’ve faced a lot of uncertainty together, and many, many laughs. We’ve even been together in times of shared grief.

That moment, as I walked with them, we were experiencing something new once again as, George, a chimpanzee they weren’t familiar with, watched them from the other habitat. Foxie held out her hand to ask for reassurance and I held mine out to her and nodded my head. I told her it was okay and George was a nice guy. She seemed reassured and continued up the hill. Missy was calm and brave and curious. And the three of us continued walking together, as old friends.

I glanced back at George and thought about how everything is so new to him. I contemplated the experiences that we’ve already shared together and thought about the amazing experiences and the change and growth that’s ahead for us both. For us all.

I would like to share an experience with all of you reading. For those who are able, I really want to see you at HOOT! 2025 in Seattle! We’ll be sharing more about George’s story and you’ll leave with an even more profound understanding of the sanctuary and the chimpanzees. Get your tickets right now!

You really do want to come in person if you are able, so you can share the experience with a room full of wonderful people. But, if you really can’t make it in person, definitely RSVP today for online viewing and participation.

I’ll leave you with a few photos taken by staff yesterday during Missy’s 5oth celebration.

Missy’s 50th Birthday!

August 23, 2025 by Jenna

A 50th birthday is a huge milestone! Today is Missy’s 50th birthday. Can you believe it?!

Thank you to Paulette for sponsoring Missy’s birthday party today! She was the first of many Missy birthday sponsors- thank you all so much!

As you probably know, Missy is a tomato enthusiast. It doesn’t matter what kind, the size, or the color – Missy loves them all the same. On brand, today, we had a tomato themed birthday celebration with every tomato you can think of, a tomato “cupcake” I attempted yesterday, watermelon bowls (tomatoes, cabbage, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, snap peas), and drinks (sparking cider and mix of guava, pineapple, and watermelon).

The chimps absolutely loved it! Especially Missy. Check out the party video above!

Happy Birthday, Missy, from Patti!

August 23, 2025 by Katelyn

Thank you so much to long-time volunteer caregiver and Chimpanzee Pal to Missy, Patti Sims, for also sponsoring today and being part of the incredible parade of love for Missy and her 50th birthday celebration!!

“I’m thrilled to sponsor Missy on her birthday! Her quiet, effortless confidence always amazes me. Known as a “chimp’s chimp,” she prefers her chimp family to humans, which makes it extra special when she does connect—whether through a playful chase or the honor of grooming. What I admire most is her fierce devotion to family. Protective, loyal, and brave, this compact athlete can be quite fearsome! Happy Birthday, Missy—you’re one of the coolest people I know”.

Thank you for adding so much to Missy’s special day, and life, Patti! We appreciate you!

Missy is such a special person and we all love her so much.

That time Missy fearlessly climbed up on the roof of Carlene’s tower to explore, while her caregivers fear-grimaced below (forgetting she’s not only a chimpanzee, but Missy chimpanzee). 😉 :

Happy Birthday, Missy, from Tobin and Annie!

August 23, 2025 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Tobin for also sponsoring today in celebration of Missy’s birthday on behalf of Missy’s BFF Annie!

Annie and Missy have been in one another’s lives far longer than they’ve been in sanctuary together. How extraordinary, after all they’ve been through, that these two best friends have both reached their fifties together. Thank you much for honoring their special friendship, Tobin!

For Missy Chimpanzee!

August 23, 2025 by Katelyn

So many thanks to dearest long-time friend of the sanctuary, Kathleen Corby, for sponsoring this very special day of sanctuary in celebration of Missy, who is turning 50 miraculous years old today!

“Today Missy turns 50! An astonishing accomplishment considering Missy almost didn’t make it out of LEMSIP to travel with the rest of the Cle Elum Seven to their new sanctuary home because of a health concern. Not to be ignored, Missy is an amazing, exuberant athlete, even now as she turns 50! I have a special pocket in my heart for Missy. When I first followed the blog, Missy was easily recognizable so I grew attached to her. Missy, BFF to Annie and the pine tree climber. Happy Birthday! xoxo”

Missy had her first opportunity to climb a tree at the age of 47 and she didn’t waste a moment. It’s safe to say that’s how she’s approached every day of her sixteen plus years in sanctuary. We love her so. (We are so grateful to have several sponsors for Missy today – be sure to tune back in later for her party!):

Big Wins: Training Progress & Happy Reunions

August 22, 2025 by Sabrina

George has been putting in the work with his positive reinforcement training, and it’s paying off. He’s already mastered showing presenting different body parts and participating in Kardia Mobile ECG readings without a hitch. Now, he’s learning to put body presentation to use by placing his hands and feet inside an X-ray box that is set up on the mesh of one of his rooms – we use these whenever we need a quick X-ray of the chimps hands or feet. On top of that, he’s just started practicing presenting his index finger for blood pressure checks—stay tuned for more on that in an upcoming blog post.

As for Dora, she’s taking a little break from Cy’s group for a few days and is off on a girls’ getaway with Mave and Honey B (Willy B is also present). I think it’s safe to say they are having a great time together!
