Our thanks to Lynn Wilson for sponsoring this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in honor of Mari!:

“Today is Mari’s birthday. We both love following the chimps daily through the blog. Hope this gift cheers up your day.”

Lunch To Go!

November 12, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Join us for lunch with the chimpanzees from Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest! On today’s menu, gold potatoes, broccoli, and bananas. You’ll notice that some of them opt to grab a portion of their food and move to other areas in the enclosure to feast. Then, when they are done with that portion, they come back to get the next one. Jamie usually grabs her food and moves to the window of the greenhouse to have her portion. Others have their favorite spots by the caging, like Cy. He likes to grab his food by the caging of Lupine playroom, where he stays until the entire meal is done.

From the other “Cyde”

November 11, 2022 by Jenna

I spent most of today trying to capture footage of Burrito interacting with his new burrito Squishmallow for today’s blog. However, it just wasn’t happening! He kept running by it and wanting to play chase with his caregivers instead. He’ll play with it later, I’m sure!

Burrito Squishmallow for Burrito:

Instead for today’s video, I wanted to focus on Cy and his love for reading. I was able to capture him reading while cleaning the Mezzanine recently. This angle shows how much he scans each page and picture of his magazine, something you can’t always see from the other angles. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Today is for Mary Ann!

November 11, 2022 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary is being sponsored by Tobin in honor of Mary Ann Karwowski:

“I have long wanted to sponsor a day of sanctuary for my old friend, Mary Ann Karwowski. I hope that today, the centennial of Kurt Vonnegut’s birth will – “so it goes” – provide as good an excuse as any to give a shout-out to her.

Soon after I learned about the CSNW and the then – seven fascinating and adorable people who lived there, I wrote Mary Ann to tell her all about the chimpeople I had discovered. After all, Mary has a lot in common with the Magnificent Seven. Like Jody, Mary has a green thumb, and like Foxie, she takes care of miniature objets d’art. Mary is a good athlete like Missy, has a great sense of humor like Burrito, and like Jamie, she is highly intelligent and is known to peruse the pages of Dwell magazine for home refurbishing ideas.

Like Queen Negra, Mary Ann had a claim to royalty: as the song goes, ‘She is the Dancing Queen…’ Finally, as Annie is to Missy, Mary Ann is a great friend to have.

And if that isn’t enough, Mary has the picture of Neggie and her sunflower positioned with pride-of-place in her office; to the Queen of the Sanctuary from the Queen of the Disco, royalty nods to royalty.”

Many thanks, Tobin, for including the chimpanzees in your celebration of Mary Ann!  Have a wonderful day, Mary Ann! All of us here send you all the good thoughts for a day filled with all that makes your heart sing.

Happy Birthday Honey Cow!

November 10, 2022 by Anna

Today our beloved Honey Cow turns 15! At CSNW, caregivers have been getting to know this sassy golden cow for the last 4 years! A very special thank you to Paulette Wrisley for sponsoring today in Honey’s honor.

Honey is easily recognized as the lightest “honey” colored member in her small herd of fellow Jersey cattle.

From front to back: Meredith, Betsy, Honey and Nutmeg:

Honey is also known for being  the sauciest member of her herd. She has no patience for the hugs we would ideally like to give her. Occasionally we can get away with a few scratches or a little brushing, but in general we respect Honey’s wishes and give her the personal space from humans she seems to appreciate. I think if Honey could plan an ideal birthday party for herself, she would like a bale of hay delivered to her barn and to be left alone with her family, and that’s just what she got today!

Here are a few of my favorite photos of Honey taken by my fellow caregivers throughout the seasons!

Five Simple Rules to Becoming Mora

November 9, 2022 by Kelsi

The thing about Dora is that everyone loves her! If you had told us that she would be the popular girl, I think we all would have been shocked. But it’s hard work being popular, we don’t know how Dora does it. She doesn’t seem to get a lot of alone time, but Dora also doesn’t seem to mind all that much. Especially when it comes to Mave. Again, if we were making predictions of friendships going into integrating this group of 9, my money would not have been on Mave and Dora. But that is the thing about chimps, they are always surprising us! And this was one of the best surprise I think we all didn’t know we needed. It has been so sweet to watch Dora and Mave’s friendship blossom. They truly care for one another and enjoy their time together, which is how the power couple of Mora became. However, there are rules to Mora:

1. Groom or spend quality time as often as possible

2. Three can be a crowd, but not all the time.

*** Rules 3 and 5 are very important and can be repeated or enforced multiple times throughout the day!***

3. No, and I repeat no, more than one arms length apart from each other. If Dora or Mave are to far apart, adjustments must be make quickly!

4. Always try a little bit of each others food. Sharing is caring you know!

5. It is important for any relationship to hug or hold hands as much as possible. The more engulfed the hug is the better!

Cold November Rayne

November 8, 2022 by Chad de Bree

Okay. So the title is a little misleading. Besides it being cold and snowing outside, Rayne has stuck to being inside most of the day, nice and warm in a nest. I just had a certain song performed by an 80s rock group stuck in my head today.

Today is, however, our monthly staff training day. Since training takes up most of the afternoon, there wasn’t much time to capture photos for a blog. To compensate, here are some photos, old and new, of Rayne looking snug as a bug in a rug!
