Swinging into the New Year!

December 31, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Today’s video features Dora showing us a great way to swing into the New Year!

This past year has been a good one at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. Some of the most memorable moments in no specific order are:

  • The integration happened between the Willy B’s and Cy’s groups making them a group of 9 chimpanzees: Rayne, Lucky, Mave, Honey B, Dora, Willy B, Terry, Gordo, Cy!
  • Young’s Hill expansion was finalized!
  • Missy and Jamie climbed trees for the first time ever!
  • The chute’s expansion that connects the front rooms, the Bray, and the green house was finalized and it is a big hit!
  • Hoot! was held in person for the first time since 2019!
  • The Comfort and Joy! auction was a success!
  • Grace and Jenna joined the caregiving team!
  • Caregiver Kelsi got married to the love of her life, Adam!

Wishing everybody a happy and safe New Years Eve,

All of us at CSNW

For the CSNW humans

December 31, 2022 by Katelyn

Our sincere thanks to Colleen Walford for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in honor of the humans of the sanctuary!

“In honor of the staff and volunteers at Chimpanzee Sanctuary NW for all their work in 2022. It is such a pleasure to read about the chimps and see their pictures. Thanks for all the hard work by the staff and volunteers in sharing sanctuary life and events with your followers.”

Thank you for your kind thoughts and words, Colleen, it means to much. We so appreciate you (and all our amazing supporters) for being here with us and the chimpanzees. You make sanctuary possible. And I know I speak for everyone here when I say it’s an honor caring for all the amazing individuals who call the sanctuary home.

Stuff

December 30, 2022 by J.B.

As many of you know (especially if you watched the recent Christmas videos), the CSNW chimps have a lot of stuff. Most of the chimps are not attached to these things – they use them and enjoy them and then go on about their business. But some chimps are quite materialistic and borderline obsessive about it, too.

This morning, Sofia and I were cleaning the playroom when I heard Jamie emit a “low moan” from the front rooms. This is a vocalization that often indicates satisfaction. I imagined that she had saved her primate chow from breakfast, as she often does, and was digging into it in private while the others chimps groomed in the greenhouse. But when I peeked around the corner I found that she didn’t have any chow and was simply making a nest. With her, however, was her favorite book, I’m Lucy.

An attachment to things wouldn’t work very well for a species that ranges across a vast territory and rarely sleeps in the same place twice. While Jamie was not fortunate enough to know the life of her wild counterparts, there’s some comfort in knowing that she gets to experience the same pleasure we do when settling down with a good book on a snowy winter morning.

On a separate note, I just wanted to express our thanks to the rest of the staff (and their spouses) who dealt with some challenging conditions while Diana and I were gone on a longer than expected trip. Kelsi mentioned that the well froze up, but she may not have mentioned that the cattle water also froze up just as we left, the radiant heat in the original chimp building stopped working the next morning (we have backup heaters on standby), and the tractor refused to run, requiring them to find someone to come plow the sanctuary’s long and steep driveway on short notice and make multiple trips to the well house with a heat gun using snowshoes. All of this on top of having to take turns staying overnight at the sanctuary through the holidays. Some might say that Diana and I were the real heroes last week, as we valiantly struggled to enjoy all the cookies, cocktails, and Christmas presents with my family while burdened with the knowledge that the rest of the staff were facing one catastrophe after another. But I’d say our coworkers did a pretty good job, too.

Winter Projects

December 29, 2022 by Anna

Old man winter has “generously” provided caregivers with steady projects since November. Luckily, we have a system in place so the chimpanzees can still go outside and get fresh air if they choose to. Today we caught up from our other chores and made sure Jamie’s group got to stretch their legs on some freshly dug pathways!

In Honor of Rob and Debbie’s Wedding Anniversary – Congratulations!

December 29, 2022 by Grace

Today, we celebrate the 32nd wedding anniversary of Rob and Debbie – the parents of our caregiver family member, Jenna! Thank you, Jenna, for sponsoring today in honor of your parents wedding anniversary!

“December 29, 2022 marks 32 years my parents have been married. Both my parents have always supported me when I decided I wanted to work with apes – I cannot thank them enough for helping me along with all my adventures. I wouldn’t be at CSNW today without them. As avid blog readers, I hope they love their appearance on said blog! 🙂 Love you!”

Congratulations from every one of us here, we are grateful every day for Jenna and for you both! Have a fantastic day!

I thought that a trip down memory lane of some 2022 Chimp House parties was appropriate for today’s festivities!

Nonstop Christmas Fun!

December 28, 2022 by Kelsi

Well, what an amazing Christmas it has been! The chimps are still discovering new enrichment every day, like Foxie with the Anna doll from Frozen. While others, like Burrito, are still having fun with items they received before the big Christmas party. Words cannot express our gratitude for all of our supporters, we would not be able to do any of this without you!

This morning Cy’s group received access to the Chute and to say Burrito’s group were excited would be an understatement! The seven were all lined up by the window hooting and hollering, but Burrito especially took great interest! He almost missed breakfast! It had been a little while since the group of nine had received access to the Chute, because it has been so cold at the sanctuary.

I suppose I will share with you all a condensed story about the chaos that unfolded last week! We received quite a bit of snow in the past couple of weeks and it also became extremely cold, getting as cold as -5 degrees. So cold that last Wednesday our well water became frozen.  Our co-directors J.B. and Diana had left for a quick and very deserved trip to go see family over the holiday, however with all these winter storms their flight back got canceled. We went to the store and grabbed lots of water to use for cleaning and for drinking water, but we had to use the water sparingly because we had a few more days of  this extremely cold weather. Thankfully, all of this did not affect the chimps and they were none the wiser- we made sure that they had plenty of water, food, clean blankets, and most importantly a clean enclosure! We had a Christmas miracle because on Christmas eve it finally warmed up and the water started to work again! Finally, we have caught up on laundry and mostly decompressed from the chaos that has ensued. We are sooooo grateful to have J.B. and Diana back safely and that the water is flowing again!

Coming Up Next…

December 27, 2022 by Chad de Bree

Christmas may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t planning for the next big celebration! After New Years, we have a big one: Burrito’s 40th Birthday! It’s going to be so hard to believe this Energizer Bunny of a chimpanzee is going to be 40! We are going to try to make it special for him hitting this milestone! I know we have asked a lot recently with the Comfort & Joy auction and Christmas donations, but if you could, please go to our Amazon Wish List and see if there is anything you can help out us getting to throw a 40th Birthday Bash!

Burrito with some of his favorite enrichment items; wooden blocks, slinkies, and Squishmallows!

I don’t even know where to begin describing what is happening here. We were playing, then he picked up this toy cone and started peering through it like a telescope, maybe?

I also want thank everyone who tuned in to listen to ramble on today during the virtual visit talk about enrichment! Plans are already underway for the next virtual visit talk!

Some bonus photos:

Dora pooped out after her Christmas party!

Beautiful Rayne also taking a snooze after partying!

Rayne also watching caregivers clean the Mezzanine the other day!

Negra when caregivers greeted her in the morning!

Cy thumbing through a new magazine!

Burrito loves his snowy treats!

Betsy, Nutmeg, Honey, and Meredith! The bovine are super fuzzy with their winter coats right now! (And yes, Meredith is still Miss Independent!)

Dora enjoying her cherry tomatoes at lunch!
