So I don’t forget

August 14, 2022 by Jenna

As the newest staff member, I have spent the last four months building my relationships with the chimpanzees. I was fortunate enough to be a student intern here in 2019-2020 (up until the pandemic), which means I had previously met Jamie’s group, as well as Willy B, Honey B, and Mave when they were just a group of three. However, I was not trained to interact with the chimps as an intern, so all my relationships truly started when I joined as a staff member.

I do believe that knowing the dynamics of Jamie’s group previously, as well as having glimpses into the personalities of Willy B, Honey B, and Mave, has helped me transition into my role. Throughout my training and up until now, I have tried to be intentional with my time with the chimps. I want them to know I care and that they are my priority. I want them to know I am happy to be here. While some days cleaning takes up a lot of our time, every day matters to them. Even if I don’t spend quality time with each chimp every single day, showing up every day matters to them. Greeting them every morning and every time you see them matters. Every little thing I have done has helped and will continue to help build my relationship with each of the chimps.

I have had a few moments recently that meant a lot to me, so I captured a photo during/after with my phone.

For example, Missy is very particular with the humans she chooses to interact with. She would much rather spend time with her chimpanzee friends. The other day, I went out to the Greenhouse to play chase with Burrito and Missy was out there as well. She was looking out to Young’s Hill, appearing deep in thought. Out of nowhere, she flung her back around and pushed it up against the caging, which is a signal that she would like to be groomed. To say I was shocked was an understatement! This was the first time Missy had initiated an interaction with me. I took full advantage of the opportunity and groomed her back for several minutes. Burrito gave me a look like he knew it was unusual for Missy to interact with me and patiently waited until I was done before he started playing chase again.

I captured this photo with my phone after so I would never forget this moment.

Burrito and Missy:

On Tuesday, it was a rainy day and everyone was absolutely stoked about it. The cooler temperatures, even for just one day, are so appreciated this time of year. During the afternoon, I went on a walk around Young’s Hill with Burrito. When we reached the top, Burrito sat down and was taking in the view. Or maybe he was letting me catch my breath after the steep incline, we may never know. Either way, it was a beautiful moment I knew I wanted to capture, so I would never forget.

A few days ago, Foxie dropped her dolls down to me. These are two of her absolute favorite dolls out of her collection. As you can see, they’re her brand new birthday dolls! You can tell they’re new if they still have clothes on (her preference). Something inside of me feels extra special when Foxie gives me the things she loves the most. I quickly snapped this photo while Foxie was waiting for me to toss them back to her, while sitting up in the “Loft” of their Playroom. I didn’t want to forget this.

To be honest, there are so many moments working this job that are so special. I’m sure if we asked all caregivers out there, they would all have photos like these ones so that they don’t forget the special moments. And mine are just from the past week!

Happy Birthday, Terry!

August 14, 2022 by Katelyn

Our many thanks to Mike Stockdale who sponsored this day of sanctuary for his wife, Terry Stockdale! Mike shared this wonderful message:

“I would like to Sponsor August 14th to celebrate my wife Terry’s birthday again this year. She is happy to share an August birthday with both Foxie and Missy and an anniversary date with Mave, Honey B and Willy B. Hopefully Foxie gets a new doll and all the chimpanzees get a special forage.”

Happy Birthday, Terry! You’re definitely in good company for celebration this month and we’re so thankful to you and Mike for sharing your special day with the chimpanzees. We hope you have a wonderful day!

If you missed Foxie’s recent birthday celebration on August 8th, click here to see (or relive 🙂 ) the festivities.

We’ll be celebrating Missy’s birthday on August 23rd, and as you might imagine, there are going to be “a few” tomatoes.

On August 18th, Mave, Willy B and Honey B will have been calling the sanctuary home for three years!

Continued Discussion on Chimpanzee Integrations

August 13, 2022 by Diana

You may remember, several months ago I asked you all if you had additional questions about the integration of the two chimpanzee groups, or integrations in general, for a follow-up discussion I was recording with Jen Feuerstein. I finally put together both parts of the video together, and it’s now public for anyone to view. It’s a long one, but you can skip ahead to the second part if you’ve already seen the first.

We’re always open to answering questions, as you know, so do feel free to ask us anything that we may have left out of the discussion, and we’ll do our best to answer!

Overall, I would just say that for me personally, introductions between chimpanzees is the most stress-inducing thing I’ve voluntarily done. I can’t give enough praise to all of the staff who really made the introductions happen. And to Cy. And, especially, to Jen.

Mission: Impossible

August 12, 2022 by J.B.

Sometimes the forages on Young’s Hill contain a few extra special treats – something even better than the oranges and primate chow you are currently enjoying.

If you, like Missy here, are lucky enough spot such a treat – a coconut, for example – your work has only begun. Because retrieving the prize may require a daring mission.

You must be stealthy. Drawing attention to the presence of such a treat will only invite competition.

Get in, get out, and no one will be the wiser.

Now, look around. Did anyone see you or the coconut?

Is the coast clear?

Good. Time to grab the loot and escape unnoticed.

Carefully.

Gracefully.

Like a jewel thief.

There is no coconut and you were never there.

Whoopsie daisy…

At least she stuck the landing. And kept the coconut!

Jamie, on the other hand, has no need to fear her coconut being stolen and thus can avoid the indignity of falling off a tightrope.

Negra is a strictly terrestrial mammal regardless of the situation but managed to find some goodies nonetheless.

Jody also enjoyed the forage.

As did Foxie.

Annie found some primate chow placed atop the termite mound. But I think what she really wanted was some of that coconut.

Perhaps Missy found it in her heart to share?

What does legacy mean?

August 12, 2022 by Diana

I think about that word a lot. Legacy. What does it mean, exactly? Why do we strive to leave something behind when we pass on, and how do we go about doing that?

While legacy means different things to different people, I think that almost everyone wants make a difference and feel that their life added to the world in some way. I don’t think I could co-run a nonprofit without coming to that conclusion.

I am in the privileged position of seeing, everyday, the generosity and caring within people.

Over the years, Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest has been the beneficiary of the last act of generosity from several donors. Some of these donors were very close to the sanctuary. I knew of their health struggles and was aware that they had planned to leave something behind for the chimpanzees. We mourned their passing and have been honored to be a small part of the bigger-than-life legacy they created, which included the uncountable acts of kindness they gave during their living years.

More surprisingly, the sanctuary has also received small bequests from people we were not familiar with at all. They named the sanctuary in their will without having made contact with us. I always try to gather information about these donors to find out more about them as I marvel at their surprise gifts.

I consider bequests in any amount to be very special gifts because they are an expression of the trust in a nonprofit to carry on the legacy of the donor. It’s a responsibility that we take very seriously.

You may already know that August is Make-a-Will Month. For you, blog readers, I wanted to throw out the market-tested appeal language and share the above, my rather raw thoughts, with you.

Whether you name Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in your will or not, I do hope that you will seize the day and create a part of your legacy by sitting down and planning your will if you haven’t already or updating it if you have new causes you’d like to support. You can use this tool to do that. It really is very easy and walks you through all of the steps.

If you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy, or any other asset that your will does not cover, you can plan beneficiaries for those non-probate assets separately. Use Freewill to learn more about how to go about that.

If you’ve already named the sanctuary in your estate planning, you can let us know here, and you will be counted as an official member of the Primate Family Legacy Circle.

Your legacy could make a huge difference for the future of sanctuary or for others you care about.

Thank you.

New Boot Goofin’

August 11, 2022 by Grace

It’s no secret that footwear here at CSNW is an important topic, one that is taken quite seriously. For example- a few months ago before I had my first shift, I had to pick out a pair of work boots online to be my chimp house boots. I am not normally that picky a person when it comes to fashion, but it took me longer than I would like to admit for me to settle on a pair of boots- I was way more concerned about whether Jamie and the other chimps would like my boots than I am about my normal day-to-day fashion choices.

A few weeks ago, a company named Planone reached out to us and asked if we would be interested in receiving a few pairs of their rain boots. They were super cute (and so shiny!) so of course we said yes! They came in the other day and the chimps have been very into them- Jamie, Honey B, Lucky, and Terry have been all about them since they saw them for the first time.

One of the pairs they sent us, a cream yellow short rain boot:

Check out today’s video for more on the chimps reactions! And thanks so much, Planone, for the gift! 🙂

Jamie, completely bliss-ed out about the new boots:
