Today is in honor of Beate Neher!

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Birgit Neher in honor of her sister, Beate Neher! Birgit sent the following message about her sister:

“The day of sanctuary I chose is actually my sister’s, Beate’s, birthday. She is a wonderful person, very much involved in animal rescue here on the Big Island/Hawaii. She currently has 9 dogs, 4 goats, a sheep, two donkeys, a former milk cow and I can’t remember how many cats.”

Birgit, what a thoughtful and generous way to honor your sister, Beate! We are really touched that you would include the chimpanzees in your celebration of Beate’s special day. Beate, all of us here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest wish you Happy Birthday and hope you have a wonderful day! Thank you so much for all that you do for animals, it makes us happy to know you are out there helping so many beings.

Happy Birthday, Foxie!

It’s hard to believe, but Foxie turned 38 today. Though she may have grown another year older, she showed that she has no plans to start acting her age any time soon. As soon as we walked in the door in the morning, she began spinning and pirouetting and chasing us from one part of the building to another while passing her troll dolls back and forth.

To celebrate her big day, we served all of Foxie’s favorite foods (fruit, fruit, and more fruit!) and gave her a few dozen new troll and Dora the Explorer dolls.  The chimps really enjoyed the birthday party – we tried to capture the look of sheer joy on their faces, but they would not stop inhaling watermelon long enough to be photographed.

Tracy, thank you so much for all that you do for the chimpanzees and for being the kind and compassionate soul you are. We are so very fortunate to have you as part of the CSNW family!

A Surprise for Foxie

Tomorrow is Foxie’s 38th birthday, and we’ll be throwing a big party to celebrate. We’re going to fill her day with the stuff that makes her happiest, including this impressive collection of new troll and Dora dolls:

Arm rest

After the lunch forage the other day, Jamie brought in her haul and casually ate at her leisure. Pretty leisurely too, I might add, with her arm just resting on the ladder. I think we can all relate… I know I love to just sit back, relax, and enjoy a snack. Usually that snack isn’t raw onions, but Jamie’s palate must be more refined than mine 😉

Night Bag Noises

Nightbags, or night bags, are the post dinner treat for the chimpanzees here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. Jamie, Jody, Missy, Annie, Negra, Foxie and Burrito all love these nut-filled bags and each has a preferred practice for how to get the most out of these small but delectable treats.

The sound of the chimpanzees crunching on nuts and seeds is, in my opinion, the sound of satisfaction and a job well done. No other noise is more evocative to me of hope, love, home, and sanctuary. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Listen for yourself and decide.
