The best laid plans

June 23, 2014 by Lisa

One of things that you learn pretty quickly about the unique experience of working as a chimpanzee caregiver is that flexibility is indispensable. There is a daily routine, of course, but whenever you are working with living beings with distinct personalities and preferences there is always the possibility that someone will want something else, something different from the normal. Accommodating the needs and wants of seven different chimpanzees all at the same time can be a challenge and it requires a certain adaptability!

In addition to taking the needs of the chimpanzees into consideration, environmental circumstances can also contribute to a fast paced, ever changing work setting. Sometimes weather helps to determine the course of the day or, on occasion, we find ourselves with unexpected visitors to the sanctuary. For example, today we assisted in a relocation program for a friendly neighborhood frog during afternoon cleaning.

All of which is to say that today offered us plenty of opportunity to practice creative care-giving but, as a result, provided little inspiration for a blog post. In a flash at lunchtime I decided to capture the chimpanzees as they dined in the greenhouse as the weather and lighting were quite captivating and lunch is my favorite meal of the day. Some days you just have to improvise!

Missy Chimpanzee on the Move

June 21, 2014 by Diana

It is such an incredible joy to see Missy on Young’s Hill using all of the structures for climbing and leaping and balancing and just sitting up high. She does not waste any opportunity to get the most out of the chance to move and explore.

J.B.’s description of Missy as, “a spring that was coiled up for decades, just waiting to be released” remains perfect. Just see for yourself in the photos that J.B. took this morning during a forage on the hill. Go, Missy, Go!

On Patrol

June 20, 2014 by J.B.

Some people think that we should judge an animal’s quality of life by whether or not their basic needs are being met. Do they have food, water, heat, medical care, etc.? But if we applied these criteria to ourselves, prison wouldn’t be much of a deterrent – we’d all be knocking on the gate trying to get in. Obviously, we humans are willing to deal with some amount of risk and stress in life in exchange for things like freedom, autonomy, and self-determination. And I think that chimpanzees, if they were given the choice, would do the same.

Wild chimpanzees have jobs to do. They must take care of their young, travel great distances in search of food, and defend their territory from rival communities. Captivity gives chimps everything they need to survive, but robs them of purpose.

Well, not entirely. Every once and a while, we catch a glimpse of it here. When the chimps patrol Young’s Hill, they change – their faces, their postures, everything. It’s possible that I’m just projecting my own feelings here, but they seem so much more alive when they are at work like that.

Life may be nasty, brutish, and short for some wild chimpanzees, but I’d give anything for these chimps to have had a chance at it.

Jody the Harvester

June 19, 2014 by Elizabeth

One of the chimpanzees’ favorite activities this time of year is going out on Young’s Hill and harvesting an armful (or mouthful) of the wild plants that grow out there, and bringing them back into the greenhouse to eat or wadge. Jody, especially, is a plant harvesting fiend.

Private conversations

June 18, 2014 by Katelyn

Foxie has good friends. Over the past several days she has been gifted with French Dora, Russia Dora, and Tanzania Dora dolls! They are quick to lose their worldly accoutrements but Foxie couldn’t love them more. While I am not entirely sure what makes one Dora “better” in the eyes of Foxie than another, it seems these are the perfect size for passing through the caging with caregivers, holding in one’s feet during meals, and general ease of portability. She has been utterly smitten with each of them and we have found her gazing adoringly at them on several occasions.

No cultural barriers here. Foxie and her Doras of the world seem to be speaking their own language.

Thank you so much to everyone who has sent these Dora dolls to Foxie! She has been a very happy chimp lady!

Missy taking in the view

June 17, 2014 by Debbie

This morning we put a forage out on the hill, which Missy snacked on for a bit, but then she took off running to a high spot. We don’t typically put forage past the structures, so I don’t think Missy was scouting for more food. She was just taking in the view.
