Jody and the wild plants of Young’s Hill

June 22, 2013 by Diana

Jody has really been enjoying “hunting” for wild plants on Young’s Hill. She’s not hesitant to pick the biggest ones she can find. Today, Elizabeth got some great photos of Jody solving the problem of how to carry a big plant back down the hill to enjoy in the greenhouse.

Are there any plants to be concerned about on the hill?

There aren’t any highly toxic plants on Young’s Hill, but there are some that could cause some gastrointestinal distress if eaten in large enough quantities. For example, the wild mustard weed that Jody is carrying in these photos is edible and is often eaten by humans in other parts of the world in its younger stages, but in large quantities the seeds can be toxic. Mountain lupine is another plant that can be mildly toxic, but we have never seen the chimps eating it.

Thankfully, the chimps don’t eat any of the wild plants in high enough quantities to cause concern for anything more than a mild tummy ache, and we expect that they will learn from those experiences.

Jody looks so cute as she problem solves! It is so nice to know she has lots of time, space, and things to problem solve with now. Beatiful pictures Elizabeth. Thank you.
