Pile of Trolls Day

June 9, 2012 by Diana

Watch Foxie choose her daily trolls from a giant pile in the video below.

As the video mentions, you can send your troll dolls to Foxie at the sanctuary for her birthday and to be used in the Troll Olympics. In addition to troll and dora dolls, we are looking for bakers to bring vegan baked goods to sell at the bake sale that’s part of the Roslyn Doggie and Troll Olympics on July 22nd. Contact Diana: [email protected] if you want to bake or if you have any questions. More information about this fun event will be forthcoming!

Fun & Games

Missy makes it obvious when she wants to play. The gigantic play face is the most obvious indication, but she also has the unique signal of wearing a sock on one foot.

Negra’s Choice

June 7, 2012 by Jackie

We are less than one week away from our 4-year anniversary (June 13th)! And that means it’s almost Negra’s honorary birthday! Because Negra was born in the jungles of Africa, we do not know her actual birthday, and because she is the Queen of the Cle Elum Seven, we chose the chimps’ anniversary of their arrival to their sanctuary home as Negra’s special day.

Negra is not only the Queen of the Cle Elum Seven, she is also the Queen of nuts! Nothing makes her happier than her nightbag (nightbags are paper bags of nuts, dried fruit and seeds that we give the chimps each night after their dinner)– check out this video from a couple of years ago. It really is the best part of her day.

In honor of our Queen, we are hoping to stock up on unsalted, in shell nuts! Nuts.com (formerly NutsOnline.com) is a great company that has care packages specifically designed for the Cle Elum Seven, so we hope you will support them while supporting the Seven, too. For $25, we get 1 lb bags of mixed nuts, raw pumpkin seeds, hard shell pecans, raw almonds, raw walnuts, and raw Brazil nuts! It’s a great deal and is sure to make Negra and the rest of the gang so very happy! Visit this link to place an order.

We would also love to stock up on Safeway gift cards. We’ve got big plans for Negra’s big day next Wednesday and really hope to buy some great produce for the party- including lots and lots of lettuce, another one of Negra’s favorites! You can order gift cards and have them mailed to us directly by visiting this link.

Help us give Negra the best birthday yet! We promise to throw a spectacular party for the Queen!

Wet grass

June 7, 2012 by J.B.

Jody was not very happy about the cold, wet grass on the hill today. She walked bipedally (upright) to try to keep herself dry, but decided in the end that it was better to stay warm and dry in the greenhouse.

Blanket Play

June 6, 2012 by Jackie

Today as the chimps were waiting for their lunch to be served, I caught Missy playing with a red blanketed lump, also known as Negra Chimpanzee. It stood out as particularly funny to me because, although Negra loves to wrap herself (head and all) up in a blanket, and although lots of the chimps, particularly Missy and Jamie, often play with blankets over their heads, we don’t often see Negra playing like this. I love seeing Missy bring out Negra’s playful side!

In memory of Tovarisch and Ilka

June 6, 2012 by Elizabeth

We are so lucky to have an amazing base of supporters who are always thinking of the chimpanzees. Today is sponsored by Robyn Leff in memory of Tovarisch and Ilka.  (It’s easy to sponsor a day of sanctuary for the chimps as a gift or memorial (or just because!) – just go here.)  We’re so grateful, Robyn!

Your support keeps this guy supplied with as much watermelon as he can eat:

Comfort

June 4, 2012 by Elizabeth

A few nights ago while the chimpanzees were being served dinner in the greenhouse, I entered the playroom for a quick spot clean and found this nest in Negra’s current favorite spot in the loft. The photos really don’t do it justice. It was about four feet wide and beautifully put together. The next morning when we (reluctantly) deconstructed it during cleaning, we counted 23 blankets! It was only four years ago that Negra and the other chimps were sleeping on bare concrete in the lab. To Negra, I think sanctuary means comfort.
