This is for the activists

September 17, 2016 by Diana

Last night I was going through some old documents and newspaper articles and reading about the history of chimpanzees being retired to sanctuaries, and, in particular, activists who worked to get chimpanzees out of Buckshire, where the seven chimpanzees living at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest came from.

I will share more details at a later time, but one thing that really struck me was the extremely dedicated people who worked for years to help chimpanzees who they had never even met.

Working at and for a sanctuary can be hard work, but the reward is constant. There is a direct connection between the care that goes into sanctuary work and witnessing happy chimpanzees benefit from your labor. Most people who work in sanctuaries are also advocates, but our priority, as it should be, is to provide the very best life possible for those we care for at the sanctuary.

People who work full-time as activists and animal advocates don’t often have this direct reward. Their work, which often involves endlessly writing complaints and submitting FOIA requests, or working to change legislation, can be arduous. They know that there is wrong being done, and they work to create better outcomes, but it often takes years to see an outcome; all too often nothing comes of their hard work. Then, when there is a happy ending, they move on to the next animal or animals who are suffering.

But their work is precisely what has made the sanctuary life for the Cle Elum Seven, and for other animals in sanctuaries, possible.

Today I would like to publicly thank them and let them know that in my head and heart I thank them each time I think of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees, which is pretty much all the time.

Don’s Birthday Party

January 2, 2015 by J.B.

As promised, here are photos and video of today’s party. The chimps enjoyed a forage of leeks, red bananas, broccolini, sweet peppers, lettuce, and corn. We also put out cups of warm herbal tea with almond milk, party hats filled with peanuts, and pinatas stuffed with grapes, as well as a fresh bale of alfalfa (a nest you can eat!).

We’re big on recycling around here, so for today we re-purposed the Christmas tree as a “Birthday tree.” Annie and Burrito took turns picking treats from its branches:

Negra went straight for the corn, while Missy hunted for red bananas:

Foxie guzzled all the tea she could find:

web_Foxie_hold_cup_tea_GH_party_dm_IMG_1897

Somehow, Missy got to the party hat pinata first, so all Jamie could do was scrounge for leftovers. Don’t feel sorry for her, though – she ate almost everything else:

Watch the video:

It’s fitting that the chimps enjoyed a forage in the greenhouse today, and that Jamie walked around the hill to her heart’s content. Both the greenhouse and Young’s Hill were made possible in large part by Karen and Don Young.

So Don, thank you (and Karen) for caring so much about these seven chimps. We hope you enjoyed your birthday – the chimps certainly did!

On The 2nd Day of Thanks

November 22, 2014 by Diana

Yesterday, J.B. introduced you to our Seven Days of Thanks by posting about the dedicated, full-of-heart staff caregivers that give so much every day to the chimpanzees.

Today, I would like to shout from the highest mountain a thank you to the founder of the sanctuary, Keith LaChappelle, all past board members, and our current board of directors.

There would certainly be no Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest without the vision, foresight, commitment, and determination that Keith and the founding board harnessed to start this organization from scratch – taking it from an idea to help chimpanzees in need to a physical sanctuary that has cared for seven of the greatest primates I know for the last six and a half years.

There are a lot of people who have the desire to start a sanctuary, but only a fraction of them see their dream become a reality. Starting a sanctuary is not easy in any respect, and it takes a profound amount of work in so many disparate areas to be successful.

Keith officially founded Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in 2003 by bringing together people with varied expertise and the shared desire to make a difference and personally purchasing the sanctuary property to lease to the organization. Ground breaking for the sanctuary began soon after, but it wasn’t until 2007 that the future inhabitants, the seven chimpanzees we all love so much now, were identified.

There have been many incredible people involved in the important work of leading the strategy of the organization as members of the board of directors over the last eleven years, making critical and sometimes difficult decisions. Board members are often the unseen and unsung heroes of nonprofits, carrying the huge responsibility of the organization’s health and vision.

We recently had our annual board retreat, which renewed my admiration for our current and past board members. Having a team of people focused on the same mission, with the same goals for the future, is essential and also inspiring.

Thanks to our retreat facilitator Susan Howlett for the above photo that looks staged – we really were all concentrating that hard!

The best way to show the impact of the work of Keith and all board members who have carried the organization from it’s idea phase to today is to show how far we’ve come.

Below are a few shots of the different phases of the sanctuary over the years:

7 Days of Thanks

November 21, 2014 by J.B.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, we’ve decided to spend the next seven days giving thanks for all of the primates – human and nonhuman – that make this sanctuary what it is. To start, I’d like to recognize the folks that literally dedicate their lives to the well being of the Cle Elum Seven. No one has had more of a direct impact on the lives of these chimpanzees than the staff that care for them each and every day.

The other day I came across this photo of Jamie, taken just days after she had arrived at the sanctuary in 2008.

web Jamie old 100_0095 copy 2

It’s amazing how much she has changed.

web Jamie sit log bridge beneath structure YH IMG_6302

When I look at Jamie now, I see the effects of good food, exercise, and sunshine. But I also see a reflection of the people that care for her and the patience, dedication, and selflessness they bring to their work.

Caring for Jamie is not easy. She tests you nearly every day. While some people would consider getting to work with chimps a dream job, their dream version of the job probably doesn’t involve dodging mouthfuls of spit and handfuls of feces on a daily basis. But that is the reality. Jamie is a smart, strong-willed person with a need for control, and for 30 years she was robbed of her autonomy and with it, her dignity. Now she calls the shots. For the first time in her life she is surrounded by people who are willing to put her first.

web Jamie drum barrel look at camera start display playroom PR IMG_2137

That, to me, is the essence of a caregiver’s role. And I’m amazed each and every day by how much of themselves the staff are willing to put into the care of these chimpanzees. Whether it’s cleaning, preparing meals, or taking one last walk around Young’s Hill after a long day, the sanctuary staff are willing to do whatever it takes to keep the chimps happy.

There is a light in Jamie’s eye that wasn’t there when we first met her in that laboratory basement.

To the people who work so hard to keep that light shining, we give our thanks.

Thank you for getting us to our goal!

November 13, 2013 by Diana

Yesterday was a bit of a roller coaster. At one point in the afternoon, we thought we had exceeded our goal in the Biddin’ for the Seven online auction, but then we received notice that someone had mistakenly made a large guaranteed bid on an item. We corrected the mistake and watched several thousand dollars disappear from the fundraising thermometer.

We were down to the last several minutes of the auction and still had some money to raise to reach the goal. But you pulled out all the stops, and we ended up going over our goal with a total of $12,757 in bids and Sustain the Sanctuary donation pledges!

thermometer

Thank you so very much to those who participated in the auction! I’ll be sending off auction items to winning bidders in the next several days, and will be excited to hear how you like your new stuff! If you have any questions about paying your invoice, don’t hesitate to contact me: [email protected].

It’s kind of funny that I was so wrapped up in watching that fundraising thermometer – $12,000 was somewhat of an arbitrary number. It sure did feel great to reach and then exceed that goal, though! It’s not, of course, all we need to end the year strong, so we’ll be doing some end-of-year fundraising and we hope you’ll sign up for our Chimpanzee Pal program or make a general donation.

It truly does take a virtual village to run a chimpanzee sanctuary, and Burrito, Negra, Jody, Jamie, Missy, Foxie, and Annie rely on their virtual family out there in the world to keep them comfortable, well-fed, healthy, and happy. The photos and videos on this blog are a testament to what donations to sanctuaries can provide, and we can’t thank you enough for taking part in giving the chimpanzees the second chance they so deserve.

Right now there is another way that you can help Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest as well as two other animal sanctuaries. Herbivore Clothing Company is spearheading a 10% for sanctuaries week, with lots of businesses participating. Take a look at the list of companies that are participating, and start shopping or make a donation here. Big thanks to Tofurky / Turtle Island Foods and Chicago Vegan Foods for kick-starting the donations!

10percent

And if you’re still in the bidding mood, there’s still time to bid on Jamie’s painting (or any of the great paintings) in the HSUS Chimpanzee Art  Auction, with proceeds going to the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance.

And the winner is….

June 24, 2010 by Diana

Our grand total raised for our 2nd Anniversary Fundraising was

$52,561 !!

This surpassed our ultimate goal by $7561 and that means we will be installing FOUR more picture windows – the three originally planned between the playroom and the outdoor area and one more from the playroom overlooking the garden.

Big, big thank yous go to every single person who donated to the sanctuary between March 17th and June 13th. We had about 500 donations during the fundraising drive and every donation helped us surpass our goal!

Special thanks to Karen and Don Young for the $7,500 in matching donations and the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation and Tony Stewart Foundation for their $5,000 grants.

And (drumroll, please…)

Congrats and thanks to:

1) Tamela, who raised $2,391 (and counting!) through her T-Arts Etsy store full of one-of-a-kind jewelry and other wonderful hand-crafted ape pieces.

2) Felicity Wood, who raised $1,465 through her friends and family (and herself) by asking them to give to the sanctuary for her birthday

3) Leslie Sodaro, who donated $1,200 during the three months of the fundraising, giving generously on top of her regular monthly donations
