wall of windows

Windows

April 24, 2010 by Diana

Wondering what windows we will replace if we reach our ultimate fundraising goal? Thanks to LUSH and generous blog readers, we have the funds to replace three windows. We want to replace six total.

Here is the “garden-side” of the playroom. On this side, we would replace two on top and one on the bottom.

This will allow Negra to have a much clearer view. Wondering what the view looks like? See below. There’s actually a lot going on out there between the horses and cattle in the pasture, the road,  and the train occasionally going by:

And here is the outdoor area side of the playroom, upstairs. Right now, these three windows have caging plus a glass window and then plexiglass on the other side of the glass window, which obscures a lot of light and makes it very difficult to see through. Replacing these with chimp-proof glass would let a lot more light into the playroom and would allow chimpanzees or caregivers in the playroom to interact with chimpanzees who are in the outdoor area. It would be really cool, in other words.

In case you need any more convincing, here’s what a window looks like with the caging:

and here’s what it looks like without:

We can do this! Keep checking the fundraising progress and thanks so much for everyone who is working hard to help us reach the ultimate goal!

Instead of calling them just “windows,” how about “picture windows.” It’s a term not heard of much these days, but I think this term is apropos here, look at the views. I think every home has a picture window you can, just, sit at and admire the view. This home will have six “picture windows,” this sanctuary and chimps have come a long way in two years.

Candy – I like it! Picture windows.

Thanks, Diana, how about replacing windows with picture windows. The last picture is a perfect example, the frame around the window makes it look like a picture of Annie, I think that’s Annie.

I am looking forward to a future with ALL windows in the chimp house being picture windows. The chimps have seen too many cages in their lives and they deserve to see a view from their home without bars. We will do this!

We do want to keep a few of the caged windows so that we can open the glass portion to let fresh air in. We’ll have the perfect combination of picture windows with a clear view and windows that let the outside in.

Diana, great views and a great visual perspective of what you are trying to achieve! LET’S DO IT!!!

That makes perfect sense, Diana. Are the windows that were picked to be replaced the one the chimps look out more frequently than the others or did you all pick them for the varied views?

Theresa – the two upstairs are popular spots among the chimps, especially Negra 🙂
