A Moment of Peace

July 23, 2016 by Diana

Negra is not normally a “greet the morning with gusto” kind of a person. Like myself, she is more of a, “can I please have just 10 (make that 20) more minutes  of quiet before getting out of bed” kind of a person.

In the summer months, she changes her morning routine, though. Often before the humans arrive in the morning, Negra drags herself out of the nest she’s slept in on the catwalk or the loft of the playroom, and makes a new nest on top of the tall structure in the greenhouse.

For some reason, most of the other chimps remain in the building, which allows Negra to have some glorious peace and quiet and alone time before the ruckus of the day begins.

This morning, she even had a little snack leftover from the night enrichment the previous evening.

Being able to witness moments like this is what makes my heart burst out of my chest for the love I have for Negra and the gratefulness I feel for everyone who shares this love.

Maybe we could just have 10 more minutes?

Vote for Crafty Projects

October 25, 2012 by Diana

Back in July, I posted about a “Pinterest Challenge” asking crafty people to take some misprinted sanctuary shirts and make something new out of them. Several people responded. Then the fire hit.  Following up with crafters, updating the challenge, and spending any time on Pinterest ended up being sacrificed for other work.

We did, however, receive three quite phenomenal projects that I’m excited to share with you right now. Please comment on this post with a vote for your favorite (#1, 2, or 3), or, if you’re undecided, tell us what you like about each of them.

#1

dog collar sleeves

The first project we received was hand delivered at the Troll Olympics by volunteer Carrie Parker, so she gets the award for the fastest-craft-turn-around. Her speediness did not take the place of quality, though! These better-than-bandana reversible sleeves thread onto your canine companion’s collar to spruce up his or her look and advertise the sanctuary. Aren’t they neat?

#2

blanc's shirt basket

The second project we received was made by friend of the sanctuary Blanc Weber. She contacted me and said she wanted to use the shirts for a crocheted basket. Not being all that crafty myself, I couldn’t picture what that would look like. I had no idea you could transform ordinary t-shirts into such a cool and sturdy basket! Blanc said Foxie could use the basket for her troll dolls, but I’m not sure I can bear to give the chimps this creation.

#3

Jenny's chimp stamped bag

The third and last project we received was an adorable tote bag hand stamped by former volunteer and wonderfully creative human Jenny Chang. You can probably guess my favorite part of the bag – the troll-inspired pink hair on one of the chimps. The straps of the bag, which I did not capture in the photo, are braided and long, making this a useful cross-shoulder tote, in addition to being a one-of-a-kind craft.

Okay, vote away!

In depth story from KOMO

September 7, 2012 by Diana

KOMO News (ABC Channel 4 in Seattle) has shared a longer, in depth video and interviews about the Taylor Bridge Fire at the sanctuary. They put the video on their website here.

You can watch it below and you can email KOMO to thank them for sharing the original story at this address: [email protected]

Cinco Mil de Mayo Party

May 5, 2012 by Diana

In celebration of reaching our goal of 5,000 “likes” (fans) on the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest Facebook page (an increase of over 300 since yesterday!), we threw a Cinco Mil de Mayo party for brunch this morning.

On the menu was guacamole in lettuce with tomatoes and a side of watermelon, accompanied by sparkling seltzer water with lime wedges:

And what’s Cinco de Mayo without a pinata?

Negra loves both avocados and lettuce, so she was very pleased with the party menu:

Missy also really enjoyed the lettuce guacamole wraps. She had a technique of licking the guacamole off first, then eating the lettuce:

Jamie enjoyed the refreshing sparkling water, served in plastic shot glasses:

Burrito‘s strategy was to gather as many pieces of primate chow as quickly as he could:

Annie also enjoyed the chow, though in a slower fashion:

Guess who got the pinata? Yes, indeed – the leader of the group, Jamie, claimed it as her own:

She must have left some nuts inside, though, because Negra was eating a walnut later in the party:

It was a pretty windy day, but Foxie took some time to explore on Young’s Hill with Dora:

Negra decided the party was not complete without fresh grass from the hill, so she went out and helped herself:

For dinner, J.B. served the chimps baked sweet potatoes, corn, and celery. Here he is serving celery to Jody:

Of course, dinner was capped off with the traditional Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest night bag of seeds, popcorn, nuts and dried fruit. Jody lied down to eat hers:

Thanks and happy Cinco de Mayo to everyone who liked the FB page for the first time yesterday and for those friends who recruited new fans of the Cle Elum Seven! Please explore the blog and the rest of the website to learn more about your new friends! And if you’re local, join us on May 20th in Ellensburg for Race for the Apes – our first 5K run / walk fundraiser.
