Missy

Cautiously Carefree

February 2, 2019 by Diana

The chimpanzees still don’t do much lounging on Young’s Hill. They spend quiet moments outside, to be sure, but it’s rare to see any of them just fully relax like they do when they’re indoors. Even when we’ve put out blankets, we haven’t seen them really nest.

Perhaps because they spent decades living indoors in laboratories without access to big open spaces, the outdoors seem to require more vigilance. I guess I feel the same way, come to think of it.

This morning, I did catch Foxie lying down way up high on the structure donors named “Jamie’s Lookout”.

You might notice that she’s still holding onto the ladder.

Even with this tether to security, you can tell that she is happy because she’s rubbing her big toe and second toe together – a classic and unique sign of happiness for Foxie.

Missy noticed Foxie in repose, and came over with a big playface. Then ensued a very short tickle/wrestle game (so short I didn’t capture a decent photo).

Missy then spied on J.B. who was with the cattle on the other property,

took a moment to sit next to the now upright Foxie,

and resumed her position on the other side of the lookout.

Foxie did some careful inspecting of the structural integrity of the platform before making her way back down.

Morning Exercise

January 29, 2019 by Elizabeth

When Anna opened the door to Young’s Hill this morning, the chimpanzees couldn’t get out there fast enough. It’s a crisp, sunny morning – the perfect weather for exploring outside with your friends.

Foxie, Annie (kissing Foxie’s hand), and Missy:

Negra, who usually prefers the warmth of her nest, got out and found a little snow to eat:

Annie soaked up the sun:

Missy:

Jody took in the view from her favorite spot:

Foxie’s priority was to lick as much frost as she could get her tongue on:

Burrito:

Best Kind of Sundays

January 27, 2019 by Kelsi

Negra was really into the weather today and who could blame her. It’s 51 degrees outside in January! Seriously, these chimps spent all day in the Greenhouse or on Young’s Hill, so it was a quiet and content chimp house today…

Negra out on Young’s Hill this morning:

Later Neggie found some snow/ice and set up shop on a comfy platform with a great view:

Foxie decided to keep Neggie company:

And I think Neggie didn’t mind:

Negra and Foxie’s view this morning:

Meanwhile, Missy (left) and Annie (right) were having an epic game of chase, as Foxie observed on the side lines:

Jody came out to enjoy the sun:

Burrito and Foxie also foraged for some snow/ice:

More joy!

January 25, 2019 by Anna

What’s your favorite play move in this video? I’m partial to the “Drag a Sitting Missy.” Second place would probably have to go to “Squish a Sitting Missy.”

Missy’s Rumination

January 24, 2019 by Diana

When presented with an edible landscape, what is one to do?

Perhaps first, a moment of reflection:

And then a careful up-close contemplation:

And, finally, a decision:

Feel the joy!

January 23, 2019 by Anna

Today was filled from top to bottom with sunshine (prime weather for wrestling in the greenhouse). One window in particular was the hot spot made popular by Missy and Foxie who had a wild game going that included multiple play partners.

Annie

January 20, 2019 by Kelsi

I have been watching a change with Annie. As many of you may know, Annie is not one of the highest ranking chimps in the group. However, it seems like she knows how to play her cards. She knows exactly when to steal food, something that could get her in trouble with the other chimps. She has to be brave, play it smart, and wait for the perfect moment. Burrito can sometimes get a little too excited, and carried away. She hasn’t been afraid to call him out lately either! Annie has even been more people oriented recently as well. Maybe even a little flirty with some of our male volunteers! She is normally known to spend a lot of time with her chimp friends like Missy, so this new interest in people is very fun to watch. If you’re lucky enough to be the one getting to hangout with her it just makes your heart happy. She is getting bolder all the time, and I think you can see the confidence on her face.

Jamie found a few good magazines and cuddled up into her nest:
