Missy

Wow!

December 4, 2019 by Kelsi

I just have to say WOW! On top of an amazing Giving Tuesday, you all also out did yourselves by buying all the blankets within an hour or two of posting the blog. We are so fortunate for such amazing supporters! I know some of you are wondering if you can send blankets, but for now I think we are all set! Check out our Amazon Wishlist for other things that need donated! Keep a close eye for our Christmas requests. And again thank you! I had created a fun video of the chimps playing, but our internet is being sooo slow today. Stay tuned for the video tomorrow! In the meantime, please enjoy the collection of photos!

The Blanket Shredder!

December 3, 2019 by Kelsi

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest has always had an abundant amount of blankets for almost twelve years. Suddenly, we have become low on blankets. This has never happened in CSNW history! The blankets just started becoming smaller or ripped into pieces. Now, I don’t want to name names, but Jody has decided to alter her blankets, as well as a few other people. This is where we need your help! We have add blankets on our Amazon Wishlist. I have collected some photos of the chimps lounging in nests of warm and cozy blankets!

We don’t have many photos of Mave, Willy B, or Honey B in nest yet! But, they also love nesting! Especially, Honey B, she makes very big nests.

When Friends Come to Visit

November 19, 2019 by Kelsi

Burrito is doing well and the ladies are making sure he is taken care of! Each one of the girls came up to Burrito throughout the day to groom or spend time with him at the mesh. Honey B, Mave, and Willy B got access to the chute for the first time since Burrito’s injury. Which, did cause a little bit of commotion, but the girls made sure to check on Burrito during the whole process.

Annie seeking reassurance from Burrito:

Foxie also checked in with Burrito:

Jamie pulled up a barrel to watch over Bubba and also to see what snacks he was getting:

Jody, like the den mother she is, was constantly making sure Burrito was okay:

And Neggie stopped by to groom him too:

The Way Chimps Play

November 14, 2019 by Kelsi

I love this video! There are just so many good examples of how chimps play. Everything is in the context of play; there are chimps biting, hitting, kicking, and slapping. Now, you might be wondering how I know it is in the play context. Well, some ways you could tell are their lower lip is loose, they are not showing their top teeth, no one is pilo, and if you listen really carefully that breathy sound is laughing. I can say I would never let one of my friends bite me, but as chimps this is how they play!

Example of a play face- Missy’s top lip is covering her teeth and the bottom teeth can show:

Who Runs the World-Girls!

November 12, 2019 by Kelsi

These girls run the Sanctuary! Not only do they out number the fellas, but they often are more strong willed. The ladies may be submissive to Willy B, but they are not afraid to take charge!

Having a Ball!

November 6, 2019 by Kelsi

While we are in the process of figuring out our next steps for introductions. It is nice to see that some things never change! Missy and Annie were in the phase 1 front rooms having a ball. These ladies were: play kicking, biting, and smacking each other around. At one point Annie is play biting Missy’s swelling and Missy can’t move! They were playing so rough, but they were also having a lot of fun and letting loose. These are also the moments we look forward to seeing in the future with Honey B, Mave, and Willy B. It may not happen right away as we may know now, but moments like this are the reason we are doing this. More social opportunities, more choices, and more growth.

I came across this photo of Missy from months ago and thought I would share!

The ties that bind

November 4, 2019 by Katelyn

Honey B and her mother, Missy, are very different people. We so look forward to them being able to spend more time together and to be able to see the direction they choose to take their relationship with one another. But something I love most about knowing the children of the chimpanzees, or at least having their photos, is the gift of seeing the similarities. Seeing that despite only having had hours together at birth before being horribly and heartbreakingly separated, of having lived most of their lives apart, it’s still there, in their eyes, or the way they hold their hands, or even things that they like and dislike. Each other.
