Jody’s Spa Day

May 4, 2011 by Diana

We all know Jody knows how to relax (see this the old Lessons from chimpanzees post with Jody nesting outside and this classic photo retrospective of Jody’s yoga poses).

Well, a couple of weeks ago Jody took a serious liking to the sandbox in the greenhouse. The greenhouse must have warmed up the sand nicely. While Connie and I cleaned the playroom, Jody truly appeared to be in her own private spa, oblivious to the world.

P.S. Don’t forget that we’ll be celebrating Jody’s birthday this Sunday – Mother’s Day!

Chimps in Labs report

April 24, 2011 by Diana

We are lucky that we are able to see and share “the other side of the story” of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees. But we never forget where they came from and we never forget about the over 1,000 chimpanzees still in biomedical research facilities.

Today, an excellent set of articles came out about the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research and the issue of the Alamogordo Primate Facility chimpanzees whose fate is still uncertain after receiving a temporary reprieve from their transfer to what is now called the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. Please read the series of articles in McClatchy by Chris Adams here: www.mcclatchydc.com/chimps

If you’ve been following this story on our blog and e-newsletters (just search for “Alamogordo” in the search box to the right), you know that Jody’s son Levi was already transferred to the biomedical facility. Among the 186 chimpanzees whose fate is depending on the decision of the NIH officials examining the issue is Negra’s daughter Heidi (pictured below), Foxie’s son David, and Jody’s daughter April.

Heidi

This is a crucial time for not just the Alamogordo chimpanzees, but all laboratory chimpanzees. The bill to outlaw the use of chimpanzees in invasive biomedical research in the United States was recently reintroduced as the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act.

The chimps’ stuff

April 16, 2011 by Diana

We leave out a lot of toys, blankets and other stuff for the chimps each day, and they pick what they want out of it. It’s interesting to me that there are such individual variations in what the chimps’ choose to hold on to for the day, or sometimes just a moment. I often think of the years and years before they came to the sanctuary when they had nothing.

Here’s Annie staking claim to a couple of clean blankets:

and enjoying her spoils:

Jody with a new piece of enrichment – woven and coiled jute from new Canadian friends:

Burrito usually chooses things he can put in his mouth:

and here’s Negra lying in her nest of blankets – Jody’s not the only chimpanzee who does the yoga “happy baby” pose:

Can a chimpanzee over-lounge?

April 10, 2011 by Elizabeth

I don’t think so. As Diana said in her blog post yesterday, lounging in the greenhouse is pretty much a full-time job for the chimpanzees this time of year. It’s so nice and warm in there that we’ve even joked about installing a hammock in the human area of the greenhouse to facilitate human lounging as well. But alas, at CSNW, the humans work and the chimpanzees lounge, and we — and the chimps — wouldn’t have it any other way.

greenhouse lounging

April 9, 2011 by Diana

This is the time of year when the “greenhouse” (the outdoor area converted to a solar oasis with lexan panels) really shines – literally and figuratively. Spring is really windy in Cle Elum and today was particularly blustery. But the greenhouse is completely protected from the wind. Since it was sunny, it was downright balmy in there. Perfect lounging weather.

Burrito, who once shunned the greenhouse, spent the entire day out there. Here he is getting every last morsel of food from an avocado peel:

Jody also relaxed outside in the greenhouse all day, enjoying the fresh straw:
