Thinking Outside the Box

August 3, 2017 by Elizabeth

Burrito is known around here as the guy who will eat anything, but even he has days when he’s just not in the mood for something. Today during lunch he saw new potential in a piece of eggplant.

Foxie’s Magic Touch

July 23, 2017 by Kelsi

Foxie is one of the only chimps that can really get Jamie to loosen up. Which makes sense because Foxie really knows how to have a good time. I find Foxie often doing a lot of imaginary play with her dolls and enrichment, getting her caregivers to run around and do crazy things, and she loves to play chase and explode into crazy fun spins! But it is really a sight to see when she gets the Boss (Jamie) to let her guard down and cut loose, because we all know how busy Jamie’s schedule is.

It’s Beets!

July 15, 2017 by Diana

The lunch forage on the hill today included quite a variety of vegetables, but the beets were a favorite. Bonus: they are easy to carry back to the greenhouse to enjoy.

Eating beets temporarily stains the chimps’ white freckles a lovely shade of pink, and cleaning up the day after a beet feast is always more colorful.

If you are wondering about the troll doll by Negra’s feet in the photo above, she actually took a shine to it today. It’s Foxie who loves the troll dolls, but once in a while Negra decides to carry one around!

Jamie and Her Squad

July 12, 2017 by Kelsi

Jamie wrangled up some of her favorite human and non-human friends for a walk around Young’s Hill. Missy followed right behind Jamie while Foxie came for a hot minute and turned back. Jody had plans of her own today. While we all walked, Jody foraged for some plants. Check it out!

Happy 4th of July!

July 4, 2017 by Elizabeth

The chimpanzees know that any good party is really about the food. In celebration of today’s holiday, we had a lunch party in the greenhouse and the chimps feasted on Field Roast (a really delicious vegetarian “meat” made from grains and veggies), corn, watermelon, blueberries, cherry tomatoes, and sparkling apple cider.

Different Strokes

July 2, 2017 by Elizabeth

The chimpanzees eat mostly fresh fruits and veggies at the sanctuary. For the most part, they like what we like, but they do have a higher tolerance for certain flavors.

Trying It Out

June 29, 2017 by Elizabeth

We set up a new water station for the chimpanzees today. Jamie took one for the team and did some quality control.
