Happy 4th of July!

July 4, 2017 by Elizabeth

The chimpanzees know that any good party is really about the food. In celebration of today’s holiday, we had a lunch party in the greenhouse and the chimps feasted on Field Roast (a really delicious vegetarian “meat” made from grains and veggies), corn, watermelon, blueberries, cherry tomatoes, and sparkling apple cider.

Yes, it wouldn’t be the 4th of July without watermelon and corn! They look so happy!
    May the 4th be with you…ALL! 🙂

Let Freedom Ring!!! Love to all of you who work for others independence. Looks like a rock’in party. One of my dreams is to be invited one of the Seven’s parties.

Elizabeth-Since wild chimpanzees enjoy an occasional monkey or two for a meal, I was wondering if “meat” is ever on the menu for these beautiful lucky seven? Thanks CSNW staff for making their days a delight to live and for sharing their 4th of July festivities with us! “Happy Independence Day to all!”

Hi Zara! Thanks for your question. We don’t give the chimps any meat, though their primate chow (small, cracker-like protein biscuits) does contain animal protein. We add soy protein powder to their morning fruit smoothies, and they have nuts and seeds daily. Wild chimps do hunt the occasional monkey, but meat makes up only about 2% of their diet on average. As an organization, we try to do the least harm we can to all animals, and the chimps’ current diet meets their nutritional needs and continues to elicit excited food squeaks!

What a feast, and to be sharing the food festivities with your best friends (or should I say family) is a true gift. Happy 4th to all!

I notice that there appears to be an indentation on the right side of Burrito’s face. Is that a new development? If so, what caused it? I hope that he and all of the Cle Elum Crew are in good health.

Hi Tobin. That’s just a natural Burrito facial feature. 🙂 I think it’s more noticeable in some photos than others. You can see it in this photo from several years ago: https://chimpsnw.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/web-Burrito-close-up-groom-Jody-profile-look-up-IMG_4340.jpg
