What’s Your Strategy?

Today, while observing the chimpanzees forage on Young’s Hill, volunteer Patti said she likes how Negra goes about things.

While Missy is running from one structure to another, finding all of the food that was placed or hidden high up on the structures or the treat rock:

And Jody is busy running around collecting as much as she can, mostly from the ground (low hanging fruit, you might say):

And then she plops herself down and simply enjoys what is at hand (in this case, a beet that she seems to have splayed open and a prized pineapple top):

After finishing, she’ll sit for a bit and look around before moving on to the next station:

J.B. described this as a lack of a strategy, but I think it’s still a strategy to have a laid back, “see what happens” way of approaching the forage.

Either way, she looked very happy out there. ❤️

Love a Chimpanzee Day 2019

Today is our 9th annual Love a Chimpanzee Day! This holiday was born in the imagination of one of the chimps’ longtime friends, but that doesn’t make it any less real to us.

This year we decided to celebrate by offering each of the chimpanzees something they love.

It’s that time of year again! It’s Love a Chimpanzee Day! As a way to celebrate how amazing chimpanzee people are (and her own special day!), our incredible friend, Monica Best, has designated this official “Love a Chimpanzee Day” and sponsors this day of sanctuary each year!

Monica, thank you so much for every single thing that you do to make sure the chimpanzees lives are filled with all the joy and hope possible. We’re so lucky to have you in our chimp family! You’re a light in the world for so many animals and an inspiration to so many humans. We all hope you have as beautiful a day as you help make possible for so many beings.

We also received an additional gift donation in honor of Monica from her mother, Linda Miller, with this sweet note:

A midspring afternoon’s dream

I am pretty sure today is the warmest we’ve had yet this spring! The chimps have been assuming their good ol’ summertime positions in the greenhouse, stretched out, legs in the air, baking in the yet unaccustomed to “heat”. There has been time spent outside among the greening of the hill and time spent inside napping in the warm afternoon. Jamie in particular spent a lot of time having one of her treasured caregivers look through her books with her and brush her hair while she dozed. It was pretty endearing to say the least.

After lunch she grabbed her beloved boot pillow and books and eventually fell sound, sound asleep.

Today’s choice of reading material was a new bird book, a vegetarian cookbook and cooking magazines:

Chimpanzees who collect

Personally, I’ve never been much of a collector. I am not very neat, but I do enjoy when my surroundings are clutter-free. There’s a particular joy I get out of getting rid of things and thereby decreasing rather than increasing my possessions. But I’m fascinated by collectors and those who clearly get a unique satisfaction in their things.

It’s all the more fascinating to care for two chimpanzee collectors. Foxie is pretty famous for her doll collection, and most people who have been tuning in to our blog for a while know that Jamie loves cowboy boots. You might have also learned that she can be pretty into books too; when the two combine – books about cowboy boots – well, that must be something akin to heaven for her.

For a couple of weeks now, she’s been carrying around a book called Texas Boots purchased by a Jamie-fan through our Amazon.com wish list.

To say that she loves this book might be an understatement or a mischaracterization. Maybe there’s a particular word that describes the feeling collectors have for their things that transcends mere everyday love.

One interesting aspect of both Jamie’s and Foxie’s collections and how they interact with their chosen objects is that they share them with the humans. Jamie wants the staff and volunteers to put on her most cherished boots. Foxie passes her dolls to trusted caregivers for safekeeping and games of toss.

And now Jamie slides her beloved books and magazines under the caging so that we can carry them with us while we follow her around the outdoor expanse of Young’s Hill on her walks or just back and forth through the building.

This is the new routine.

Earlier this week, she passed me the Texas Boots book after we had finished up a session of Positive Reinforcement Training. I expected that we would carry out our usual post-PRT routine and walk around the hill, but it was a little dreary outside. So, instead, I sat on the other side of the caging with Jamie in the greenhouse and turned the pages of the book for her to see. She would focus longer on the images of people wearing boots, and she would nod her head when I turned a page, which is generally Jamie-speak for, “yes, I like that.” After flipping through the book a couple of times, I offered to give it back to her, and she took it.

She tucked it under her arm and continued to sit on the other side of the caging. We sat in contented silence in each other’s company like that for about five minutes (which is a really long time for an active chimpanzee!), until she got up to go about other activities.

It was one of the finest moments I’ve ever had with another being of any kind.

Jamie certainly has a way of implanting the desire to find more things that she likes – to fill her life with these moments of satisfaction that I can’t say that I completely understand, but that I appreciate beyond words.

Her boots, all of them donated to her, have been outgrowing their plastic bins for a while now, and it just so happened that the boot closet we were using for staff cleaning boots was emptied now that we have more space in Phase 1 of the expansion. So, I had the idea that we should put Jamie’s boots and other sundry things in that closet.

It’s in the perfect location because Jamie can see it from the playroom loft.

I had moved Jamie’s things into the closet when Anna was on vacation last week. Anna returned on Tuesday, and Jamie wasted no time in pointing out to Anna this exciting new home for her personal treasures. In case you too want to add to Jamie’s collection, I’ve added some more books to our wish list. When we receive items, we will put them in her closet so she can point them out for us to get for her.

In case you are worried that the other chimpanzees feel left out, I think they are just as mystified by Jamie’s attraction to certain objects as I am. Once in a while, I see Missy flipping through a book, and I even gave one to Burrito last week, which he unceremoniously tossed to the ground and walked away.

I guess you have to be a collector to get it.

Morning people

Mornings in the chimp house are a favorite time. The chimpanzees almost always wake up on the happy side of the nest, sleepy, yet playful, happy to see all their human friends and as excited for breakfast as if they’ve never had breakfast in their lives. Ever. It’s also usually the one time of day when those who are less inclined to spend their time engaging with us humans want to share a quick morning greeting before getting on with their day. I always have some grand plan to film them waking up or at least get photos, but that plan has yet to materialize.

When we arrive in the morning there is a least one person sitting in front room. The perfect place from which to monitor arrivals by the driveway and into the kitchen and they’re the first person we see as we enter the kitchen. It’s very often boss lady, Jamie, up and at it, ready for the day, naturally. But this morning she was nowhere to be seen, replaced by this fella (slightly blurry because he was stomping his foot and getting ready to sprint into the greenhouse with the expectation I’d chase him out there).

When I unlocked the door to the chimp area I spotted Jody, bedhead backlit in the window she nested by which overlooks the valley, fluffing up her blankets and not quite ready for the day to begin.

Then Foxie whizzed over, hair standing on end with excitement (pilo), her usual greeting of passing her doll to us and running off for a game of chase or a backflip or a pirouette or some other endearing Foxie-ism:

Low and behold, Jamie was sleeping in and I just spotted her raise her head from her nest, wearing a fabulous Olympic flags scarf tied with troll dolls that she had apparently chosen to sleep in. Jamie’s first order of business is usually to direct us to get a boot on tout de suite. But it always takes a few minutes during this process to determine what kind of mood she’s actually in. I think that’s true for most of us when we first wake up. 😉 So it’s always a delight (and yes, a bit of a relief) to see her joyful and silly as was indicated today, by her racing downstairs, climbing up on her barrel and kicking and flailing about:

With Burrito still running in and out playing chase, he was making the girls a little wary as they expected (understandably so) him to explode into his usual morning display at any moment. I found Jody and sweet, sleepy Annie, in the doorway to the greenhouse ready to make a quick getaway should he come flying their way:

This entire time, Negra was at the very top of the greenhouse with a purple blanket over her head, enjoying her usual slow morning until breakfast was ready. She pretty much sees zero reason she should get out of bed until you have a decent looking breakfast service in hand. Smart woman. That said, she always sends down soft hoots and a droopy lip to greet us.

Missy is another person who often likes to linger in bed a bit so she tends to stay up in the toasty loft until her best friend, Annie, rouses her from her nest when they engage in slow motion chase with the girls. But by breakfast Missy is raring to go and afterward is usually one of the first to race up Young’s Hill, ready to head off on her first adventure of the day:

While mornings are often a special time to spend with the chimps, the best thing is just seeing them wake up so full of joy. One of my most beloved memories was one summer morning when I was able to observe the chimps waking up and walking and swinging into the greenhouse. They didn’t know I was there and as I lay still on the outdoor observation deck, I watched each person sleepily following the other, yawning, rubbing their eyes, all the while engaging in half asleep games of chase and tickle, laughing with eyes still half in dream time. Seeing them wake up together so content and full of joy, excited to see what their day would bring, without being aware of the humans’ presence was one of the single most gratifying moments I’ve had. It confirmed what we all hope sanctuary means to them, what each of you provides for them. And that’s the best gift.
