Sarah on the subject of healing

March 5, 2010 by Diana

A few weeks ago, two very special people from Seattle’s NPR station visited the sanctuary and interviewed Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s Executive Director, Sarah Baeckler. The interview and audio from their visit will air on KUOW Presents on 94.9 FM tomorrow at 2:06pm. Please listen to it live if you’re in the area.

You can also listen to it, subscribe to the KUOW Presents podcast, or download the interview from their website right now. It’s a very moving piece, and I hope you’ll be inspired to contact KUOW to comment, and encourage them to re-air it as frequently as they can. You will learn a lot about Sarah in the interview and why she does what she does for chimpanzees.

Missy’s Day of Play

March 1, 2010 by Elizabeth

Missy has been especially playful today (even by Missy standards). Jody and Annie have been good about humoring her (as you’ll see in the video), but even during those moments when no one else is up to a game, Missy has found a way to entertain herself. At various times today, we’ve caught her taking a flying leap from the deck outside wearing a huge playface or playing chase with an invisible partner.

News on Ning

February 19, 2010 by Diana

A couple of days ago, I added a new feature to the Chimp Sanctuary Supporters network. It’s a  feature that allows members to post links to news stories (or really anything). You can also add your own comment along with the link. I think it will be a nice way for us all to share stories about what sanctuaries are doing and anything that we come across about chimpanzees that we’d like to share with others. Check out Chimp Sanctuary Supporters and click the “News Share” tab to post.

Tool modification

February 10, 2010 by Diana

A few weeks ago, before J.B.’s recent post on tool use, I took several minutes of video of Jamie attempting to get a piece of chow just out of reach in the front rooms. I condensed the video a bit to show the highlights. There are a couple of things that Jamie does in the video that just make her all-around cool as well as demonstrate the intelligence of chimpanzees.

Foxie and Jamie playing with Diana

January 30, 2010 by J.B.

The other day, Diana was playing chase with Foxie when Jamie decided to join in on the fun. Many of the chimps at CSNW will wear clothing when they are feeling playful. In this video, you’ll notice Jamie tying a sarong around her waist just before she invites Diana to chase her.

Foxie- the next “Lord of the Dance”

January 24, 2010 by Jackie

Today, I popped in a video of “Lord of the Dance”, donated by one of our many wonderful supporters and volunteers, Stephanie Perciful. We put it on our wishlist in hopes that Negra would enjoy it, because she sometimes enjoys watching her caregivers’ dance. So far Negra hasn’t shown much interest in it and is usually too far away to see it. Foxie on the other hand, seems to thoroughly enjoy it and looks like she kind of wants to join in! Someone recently commented that Foxie may be musically inclined- I think I agree. Thanks, Stephanie! I’d say Foxie seems pretty enriched!

Note- I orginally said that the video was donated by Tamela, but it was actually Stephanie who donated it! So sorry Stephanie and Tamela for the confusion! Guess I am indeed human. 🙂

GAPA event tonight in Seattle

January 20, 2010 by Diana

Come to this talk with Debra Durham tonight! I’ll be there and will talk about the sanctuary to attendees.

Primatologist Debra Durham, Ph.D., will discuss her work with chimpanzee sanctuaries in Washington and around the world. She’ll also explain why we need to urge Sen. Maria Cantwell to support the Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA), a bill that would prohibit invasive research on chimpanzees and release about 500 chimpanzees to sanctuaries.gapa handout
