Annie

Wednesdays Book Club

January 18, 2023 by Kelsi

Though Jamie and Cy may be in different groups they had the same idea today, Wednesday is for reading.

Jamie’s current must reads are:

1. I’m Lucy by Marian Brickner – (a classic)

And a sequel to the Lucy bonobo book

2. Bonobo Lucy Grows up by Marian Brickner

Cy’s new favorite read is a magazine:

¡Hola!

Other than book club, it was a pretty quiet day, which is why it was the perfect day for reading!

Cy could not put this magazine down:

“In my day, you had to walk 15 miles in the snow…”

January 17, 2023 by Chad de Bree

Unlike what Anthony reported yesterday, the sun was not out much today. But that didn’t stop Missy and crew from going out onto Young’s Hill!

When they were given access to their outdoor enclosure, they ventured to the same structures as yesterday.

Burrito on the other hand wanted more. He tried to convince me to run around the hill with him.

He thought better of it as the outer edges of the perimeter still have a good deal of snow (thankfully for me since the human side of the fence is covered in snow and mud). Instead, Burrito decided to explore Negra’s Cabin.

His desire to run around Young’s Hill seemed to have sparked the desire in everybody else though. Shortly after, Missy, Annie, Jody, and Jamie made their way to a set of logs that haven’t been seen since Fall.

Jody:

Though they already ventured further than they have been, it still wasn’t enough for some.

Jody on a further structure to gaze at the Yakima River:

Missy sitting amongst her beloved trees:

You might guess what is next…

Missy began her ascent up her tree:

There was a good two minute window where I thought Annie was going to follow Missy up! She would stand and grab the tree, but then let go and sit down. She repeated this a few times. In between each take, she would hype herself up to overcome her fear by rocking and tapping the tree and ground. But alas, today was not the day Annie would make her go at climb the trees.

She did, however, settle on climbing on to the top of the near by structure to be somewhat close to Missy.

After a while, Annie decided it was time to head back inside for lunch. She convinced Missy this is now the plan, and Missy obliged.

Look at that dismount!

After landing a perfect 10 dismount, it was time to head inside to enjoy some lunch!

A Wintry Mix

January 3, 2023 by Chad de Bree

This has been one wild winter so far. From below zero temperatures to nearly 40º back to below freezing in the span of a couple of days, it’s sometimes hard to tell what the weather is actually going to be from day-to-day. We check the weather constantly, sometimes multiple times a day, because what was being reported in the morning, can drastically change by the afternoon. Whatever the weather brings us, however, our jobs as caregivers is to be flexible to give the residents as many options as possible given the circumstances.

As Anna wrote last week, some pathways were cleared to allow Burrito’s group the option to go on the snow-covered Young’s Hill if they choose to. Today was one of those days where they chose to.

Burrito looking for the best spot of snow to snack on.

Missy went straight for the closest, tallest structure she could get to so she could take in her surroundings…

Which Burrito also wanted to see.

Jody was very calculated in her choice of snow to snack on.

Not just any snow would do!

Though Annie spent the most time outside, she always would look back at the door leading inside.

But once Missy headed back in, so did Annie.

With Burrito not far behind.

Though we may never know what they are exactly thinking, it did seem like they were taking in as much outside as they could today. We do have a forecast of wintry mixes coming up for the next couple of days. And before we know it, the snow will begin to melt and Spring will be here (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). So might as well grab as many snow snacks while you can!

Some bonus photos:

Negra grunting at me as I greeted her this morning.

Gordo eating last night’s dinner from the top of the firehose.

On the Eighth Day of Christmas…

December 21, 2022 by Kelsi

On the eighth day of Christmas, the chimps received cozy blankets. I think you all can guess who put these blankets to good use!

Special thank you to:

CeeCee M. for bidding on cozy fleece blankets for the chimps!

And thank you to everyone who has donated blankets to us over the holiday!

It’s Negra, of course:

focusing on the peaceful moments

December 10, 2022 by Diana

As the video says, it’s been drama city the last two afternoons. It’s not the most fun to be around when chimpanzees are unhappy with each other, and it’s almost always impossible to know exactly what’s going on.

But, when we think about all of the hours in the day, the chimps spend most of them pretty peacefully. Maybe even more so than a lot of humans.

During these times of unease between the chimps, it’s nice to keep all of the tender, playful, and peaceful moments in mind.

To Shift or Not to Shift

December 7, 2022 by Kelsi

Well, if you read the title you might be wondering, who didn’t shift? Or did they eventually shift? To answer your questions, yes and yes! This morning as caregiver Sofia and I were at the home-stretch of cleaning, we just needed to do the four front rooms. However, as I went to shift Jody decided she might want to stay in front room 2 and take a nap. Burrito being the gentleman that he is, did not want Jody to be alone, so he joined her on the bench. I think we all know that Burrito can’t stay still for very long, so Jody indulged him in a very lazy game of toe and ear grab. It was very sweet to watch them gently play and laugh with each other, so we shifted around them and cleaned all the other rooms. Once we were done cleaning the other rooms we gave them back access to the other front rooms, but it still didn’t look likely we would be getting that room anytime soon. I left for a few minutes and when I came back to check on them they had taken their game to the ground in front room 3. So long story short Jody and Bubba played a very sweet game and Sofia and I got to clean everything eventually!

Today is Wish List Wednesday! Today we wanted to highlight Jamie’s current favorite book (her stash is getting low):

This morning Burrito had a nice play session with Annie too:

Emotional Beings and Where to Find Them

November 22, 2022 by Chad de Bree

Before we get into the thick of it, let’s play a game!

This is an identification game: super hard expert level! All nine in Cy’s group were caught napping on the second floor of the Marmot Mountain Playroom! Even some of the staff couldn’t get the correct answer. I admit, I would probably be wrong too had I not been cleaning in the adjacent Lupine Playroom to see who is who at the time. I would be pretty astound if somebody can get them all identified correctly!

Good Luck!

There has been video circling around on the internet recently that has been gaining popularity. The video is of Mahale, a female chimpanzee from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas, being reunited with her new born son, Kucheza. It is such a sweet and endearing video. I personally have probably watched it maybe 100 times, and that’s the low estimate. I was taken aback when I read some of the comments, however.

Perusing through the comments, I was astonished that it seemed a lot of people were just now seeing a species outside of Homo sapiens can experience emotions such as compassion or motherly love. I know I’m in a unique position where I have studied chimpanzees for several years and worked with them for a few, so the concept of them having emotions is not a foreign concept to me. I am excited, however, that video has generated the discussion and awareness of animal emotions.

Let’s face it, it is a very emotional video. Mahale was giving birth when there were complications. The veterinarian staff decided and emergency c-section had to be performed to save Kucheza. After two days in intensive, Kucheza was finally given back to his mother. And the rest is history, as they say. I am really happy for Mahale and Kucheza, and applaud the care and veterinarian staff of the Sedgwick County Zoo. But where there is a bright side, there is a dark.

After a few more watches, hit it me thinking about this type of situation with our residents and how they were never afforded the opportunity to be reunited with their child and raise their children. What kind of mother would Jody really have been? Would Foxie still be famous if she had the opportunity to raise her children instead of bonding with a Troll doll? Would Negra have a less grumpy attitude if she was able to raise her children? Would Annie be as sweet and caring as she is with her friends? Would the first rounds of integrations a few years ago be different if Missy was able to recognize Honey B as the daughter she gave birth too? There are a lot of what ifs that can play out, but I find it best to just focus in the present time.

In any case, they are here, now, living the best life they possibly can with such a horrid pasts behind them. I think we are all just thankful and relieved Mahale and Kucheza are able to spend all the time they can together and not suffer the same fate.

I wasn’t able to get any good photos today since it is now snowing and the chimpanzees spent nearly the whole day in those out of reach spots. Luckily enough though, I had some I almost forgot about!
