Missy has done nothing but crack me up all day today! I posted a short version of the following story on Missy’s Facebook page this morning, but I thought I would share it here as well. When I arrived this morning, I was first greeted by Negra, who was sitting in her nest in her normal spot on the catwalk. With her blanket over her head, she looked over at me and gave me an approving head nod. At first, I thought everyone else was outside, but then I noticed someone else covered in blankets in the loft. All I could see was the top of their head so I really wasn’t sure who it was, and it was a bright and sunny morning, so it seemed strange that someone would still be in bed. After a couple of attempts at getting them to respond, I asked “Who goes there?” and Missy came flying out of her nest and began a rambunctious chase game with me. We made several laps around the chimp house, and then, just as fast as she jumped out of her nest, she dove face-first back into her nest, and did a headstand. She stayed in her headstand for several minutes laughing and playing with a toy and then jumped out and began chasing me again. And this is how she has been all day long. I couldn’t ask for a better play partner!

I promised generous friends and family who gave through my Facebook birthday wish that I would throw a party for the chimpanzees today on my birthday. Thanks to Derek, Stephanie M., Jessica, Anika, Jen, David, Audrey, Linda, Donna, Laura, Stephanie P., Susan & Jack, Ryan, Gay & Mike, Kathy, Anna, Suzanne, Margaret & Karen and big thanks to Bruce and Deborah for helping me surpass my birthday wish goal!
We thought it would be fun to make the party a British high tea since William and Kate’s wedding was just yesterday.
We made some fancy food, put out some crazy hats, and let the chimps enjoy.
In case you’re wondering about the cake, I modified this recipe for raw birthday cake. I believe the video shows that the chimps approved. Burrito and Missy also enjoyed the cake, but they were off camera when I filmed. Debbie was serving at the barn doors to entice the chimps into the playroom so I could close off the greenhouse and volunteer Erin and I could set up the rest of the party.
The sandwiches were Erin’s creation: lettuce and English cucumbers with a layer of mashed bananas between slices of apple.
Happy High Tea, everyone!
After the party, Burrito kicked back with a macadamia nut

The care packages are $28 and include 1 pound bags of Mixed Nuts (In Shell), Raw Pumpkin Seeds (In shell), Hard shell Pecans, Blanched Hazelnuts, White Popcorn Kernels, and Organic Tropical Dried Fruit Mix- all perfect ingredients for our Night Bags! Here at CSNW, we’re always looking for reasons to party. Volunteers Jeani and Julie thought it would be fun to throw a (belated) Chinese New Year party for the chimpanzees, so they went shopping for food and decorations, and then prepared a Chinese feast. The puffed rice bowls seemed to be a universal hit — you’ll see Annie and Negra enjoying them in the video below.

One of the practical problems of running a chimpanzee sanctuary involves creating a space that the chimps can’t destroy. Their superhuman strength combined with intelligence, curiosity, and a penchant for destruction keeps us on our toes. We’re very careful to maintain a safe (and sturdy) environment for the chimps, but sometimes there’s not much you can do when Jamie decides she wants to remove one of the baseboards, as in this video.
