Happy Birthday, Heiwon!

March 29, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Don and Karen Young for their granddaughter, Heiwon Young, who turns 7 years old today! Don and Karen generously helped to make the chimpanzees’ 2-acre outdoor habitat, Young’s Hill, possible and we are grateful for their compassion and support of the chimps every single day. They shared the following sweet message about today:

“Heiwon is the daughter of Rob and Soo Mi Young, the sister of Helton Young, and our precious granddaughter. She is a Princess, loves animals, is a dancer and an extraordinary artist, but more importantly, she is a gentle, lovely, compassionate little girl.”

Don and Karen, thank you for keeping the chimpanzees in your hearts and sharing Heiwon’s special day with them.

Heiwon, how exciting to be turning 7 years old! We hope you have the happiest of days and thank you for sharing your 7th birthday with the Cle Elum 7!

Our beloved resident dancer, Foxie. (And for an oldie, but goodie, check out this video of Foxie dancing to the “Lord of the Dance” video).

Thank you, Leanne!

March 27, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Leanne Preble! Leanne shared the simple, but beautiful message that she wishes for this day to be in honor of “Hope. Love. Home…Sanctuary.” These simple words hold profound meaning for each of us. And we are privileged to witness on a daily basis what can happen for individuals when these things are provided. But we can only imagine what they truly mean for each of the chimpanzees after all they have endured.

Leanne, thank you so much for sponsoring this day to celebrate the chimpanzees and their lives in their sanctuary home. And may all those still awaiting their sanctuary be held in our thoughts as well.

We can’t all be as cool as Missy

March 25, 2015 by Katelyn

The beautiful Christmas tree that we bought for the chimpanzees (with the hopes of planting it for them when the weather warms up) has been taking a bit of a beating since the holidays. It’s currently living in the greenhouse, but seems be diminishing in size. We’ve seen Negra and Jody munching on it occasionally, and the other day Debbie captured these photos of Missy trying it out. In my mind it would be a pretty pokey snack, but I guess not in the mind of the chimpanzees.

If you’ve been following the blog awhile you may have seen us mention that Missy is really a “chimp’s chimp.” She usually prefers the company of her chimpanzee friends, particularly her best friend, Annie, to that of humans. It’s always a special treat when she chooses to engage with us in a sudden game of chase or asks us to groom her. But just to make sure we aren’t getting too ahead of ourselves, she often gazes about nonchalantly even when in the middle of a play session, just playing it cool, almost as if to say she’s not “really” engaging with the humans.

Missy’s aloofness also transfers to our attempts at getting photos of her as you can see in these. If we are lucky she sits still long enough to let us get a couple of shots, but she won’t often make eye contact for long. It’s just Missy’s way and we love that it’s always her choice to engage or not. And it makes those rare moments of Missy’s attention that much more of an honor.

Happy Anniversary, Arlene and Michael!

March 24, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Arlene and Michael in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary! The paths our lives take and the effect we can have on one another never ceases to amaze me. I am guessing that 25 years ago Arlene and Michael didn’t imagine they’d be celebrating this special anniversary with chimpanzees, or making a difference in the chimps’ lives by doing so. But we’re so grateful for all the amazing people and things life brings the chimps’ way every day.

Arlene and Michael, thank you so much for including the chimpanzees in your special day. We hope your day is full of all that you most love and enjoy. Happy Anniversary!

Blue skies, bluebirds and Burrito

March 18, 2015 by Katelyn

Spring has definitely sprung early at the sanctuary. The first bluebird couple has returned and the vivid blue skies seem to be reflected in their brilliant plumage.

And then there’s Burrito. He’s been regularly joining in on walks around Young’s Hill with Jamie and the caregivers. (You never know when you might need a toothbrush when you’re out on an adventure):

web_burrito_toothbrush_yh_kd_IMG_9820

This may not seem like such a big deal, but it’s taken Burrito a couple of years to feel as comfortable walking the perimeter as he appears to be this year. Initially his walks were rather serious endeavors, filled with fear grimaces and anxious looks back toward the safety of the greenhouse. And last year he seemed to prefer to stick closer to the greenhouse and lower hill for food forages instead. But this year, he is not only anxious to come along, he play stomps (chimpanzees often stomp their feet to indicate they want to play), laughs and runs most of the way! It’s an incredible joy to see him so much more at ease and joyful on the hill.

Jamie leading the way and Burrito following:

Here’s Burrito mid-head nod and play stomp and Jamie with her “put that stupid camera down and come on” look:

Jamie looking down from the top of Young’s Hill at the view of the valley and the Yakima River:

At this point, Jamie decided to take a short cut and head down through the middle of the bamboo to explore on her own. This would typically be when Burrito would closely follow her every step so as not to be left behind. But now he has developed this adorable little goat-like kick with his legs (which I unfortunately haven’t been able to capture yet) and takes off in a game of chase, running the rest of the way with the humans:

web_burrito_walk_run_yh_kd_IMG_9828

There are plenty of stops along the way for more play stomping and laughing (and picking up one’s toothbrush):

web_burrito_walk_yh_log_bridge_background_kd_IMG_9829

When we’ve reached the end of the loop around Young’s Hill, the chimpanzees and humans have to briefly part ways. The chimpanzees’ path takes them back toward the greenhouse and the humans’ path takes us a longer route continuing around the outside of the electric fence which encircles not only Young’s Hill, but the chimp house as well.  The chimps know we will either meet them back inside or back at the gate to Young’s Hill if they want to go for another loop. Heading off on our separate paths, I looked back to see Jamie looking up at the blue sky where three hawks were flying overhead and Burrito play stomping his way through the spring grass.

As I walked around to meet them on the other side, I was struck by a wave of gratitude for all those who made it possible for the chimpanzees to have Young’s Hill.  That the chimpanzees have not only a life in sanctuary, but an incredibly beautiful 2-acre outdoor enclosure to enjoy at their own pace with views of the valley, river, countless trees, and a variety of neighborhood wildlife all set under open skies against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. And I couldn’t help but smile. For all of us.

Today is in memory of Pat Betts

March 18, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by the chimpanzees’ dear friend, Joseph Garza, in memory of Pat Betts. Joseph and his late wife, Carlene, have embraced the chimpanzees, including them in their lives, and in turn making such a difference in the chimpanzees’ lives. Joseph shared this beautiful message about Pat:

“Pat was a daughter, sister, teacher to our young, a wife, a mother and grandmother. She raised her only daughter to become a successful lawyer in the Billings, MT area and was a strong influence in the raising of her two grandchildren. And she was the aunt of my late wife Carlene. Pat was a strong woman who loved life and lived it well. She was an active member of her church and community and loved helping those without a voice, our animal friends. To that end I wish to dedicate this day of sponsorship to her. Rest in peace Pat.”

Joseph, thank you so much for sponsoring this day in memory of Pat. We are touched that your mind comes to the chimps when honoring a loved one. Pat sounds like a very special person and we are happy to celebrate her life here today. Our thoughts are with you, and all of Pat’s family and friends.

Another strong woman, Negra:

Thank you, Erin!

March 17, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary for St. Patrick’s Day was sponsored by long time friend of the chimps, Erin McKenna! Such a fun day to sponsor!

If you’ve been a follower of the blog for very long you’ve probably noticed that we never pass up an opportunity to throw the chimpanzees a party. While this is fun for the chimpanzees and humans alike, it’s an important way to enrich the chimpanzees’ lives and provide them with variety and excitement to help alleviate the inevitable bouts of boredom that come with a life in captivity.

Party food forages help encourage the chimps’ natural foraging behaviors, something they would spend the majority of their day doing if they lived in the wild. Chimp safe decorations like paper streamers provide a fun wadging material for another common chimp practice. And who of us doesn’t just get excited when you see new and interesting things or favorite treats to eat?

Erin, thank you so much for thinking of the chimpanzees and enriching their day and their lives with your compassion and generosity! Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!
