Happy Birthday, Meg!

February 13, 2025 by Katelyn

This is such a lovely day of sanctuary, from mother to daughter, from Cynthia Cavalle for Meg Casey:

“Happy Birthday, Meg, and on your special day, I are sponsoring a day at CSNW for our buddies! (Love you, Burrito!) Congratulations, Meg, on your very positive year at school and thank you for your continued support to those in need. We make a good team-couldn’t do it without you! I’m so excited about another summer visit to visit our BFF’s at CSNW! Love you! Mom”

Happy, happy day to you, Meg! May it be the best one yet!

Thank you so much, Cynthia, for such a beautiful celebration of your daughter and for the love you both hold for the chimpanzees!

February, and all our hearts.

February 4, 2025 by Katelyn

Along with February and midwinter, the first Red-winged Blackbirds have returned, singing in our half-way-to-spring days here in the northern hemisphere. The most tenacious of these spicy guys arrive to stake out their marshy territories when it still seems impossibly cold for them to be here, their early morning songs swirling from their beaks in a cloud as they sit atop their frost-covered cattail thrones. I have an immense love for the magic that only winter holds. But this time of year, when most of us need just one sure sign that spring is making its way toward us, my eyes automatically begin scanning the marshes I drive past every day for the sudden presence of these feathery black, red, and yellow harbingers. They are the surest of sure signs, a reassuring constant.

In speaking of birthdays for February, it’s bittersweet this year. Our sole February birthday was Nutmeg’s, our beloved gentle giant of a steer who we suddenly lost last year after an unexpected health crisis. He had just turned 9 on February 10th and passed away in March. It’s not the same seeing his small herd without his enormous presence, but it’s been heartening to see how well his mama, Betsy, along with Honey and Meredith, are doing. Always together, always looking after and comforting one another, as is natural for bovine families when given the opportunity to live out their lives together.

Nutmeg and his mother, Betsy:

To say we love each and all of the chimpanzees and bovines feels almost an empty thing, so impossible is it to express how much our hearts hold for them. And what a gift of a thing to have the privilege to celebrate. Our Valentine’s Day bash planning has already begun and knowing how much you love them all as well, we can’t wait to share this celebration with you. And if you haven’t had a chance to register yet (thank you to those of you who have!!) there’s an opportunity to join the chimpanzees’ virtually for breakfast on Valentine’s morning!

Meanwhile, let our hearts leap and pirouette and kick about over the twenty residents who have called the sanctuary home so far, those who remain here and those who have gone on ahead, whose lives in all their kaleidoscopic wonder would not be possible without you.

Last year, as many of you probably recall, we posted a series of blog posts, individual Valentines if you will, for each of these unique individuals. Feel free to visit/revisit any of these you’re so inclined to (linked in their names), marvel at and celebrate how far they’ve each come in the past year, or just enjoy their beautiful selves, so a part of our hearts, family, and lives.

And Happy February, Valentine’s Day, and turning-toward-spring (or autumn – in which case I’m Elphaba green with envy) to you all! We’re so grateful you’re here.

Happy Birthday, Meg!

January 31, 2025 by Katelyn

Many thanks to long-time friend of the sanctuary, Meg Lunnum, for celebrating her birthday with a day of sanctuary for our beloved residents!

“It’s my birthday, again! So glad to have all the chimpanzees, cows and humans be part of my celebration!”

Happy Birthday to you, Meg!! It means so much that you choose to celebrate with us each year – you’ve helped make such a difference in the chimpanzees’ and bovines’ lives. We hope your day is a chimpanzee-level festive one! 🙂

In honor of the chimps at CSNW!

January 29, 2025 by Katelyn

I couldn’t love this day of sanctuary from our dear friend, Kathleen Corby, more. It’s beautiful and grounding and relevant in all the best ways. Thank you so much, Kathleen, this is a gift to read.

“January 29, 2025 marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake. As we kick off the Lunar New Year, I couldn’t help but think of the chimps!

To be more specific, this is the Year of the Wood Snake. Per Chinese cosmology, each year an animal is paired with one of the five basic elements: gold, wood, water, fire, and earth, which create a 60-year cycle. The elements compliment and conflict with each other, but it is this ongoing interaction that is believed to promote harmony, balance, and order in the natural world. The Wood Snake is said to be charming, intelligent, and creative but also secretive, cunning, and sometimes ruthless.

To the chimpanzees who reside at CSNW, snakes are just a nuisance, intruders slithering into their home, uninvited and unwanted. Not to mention, snakes for many, are simply downright scary and very dangerous! Just ask Annie and Burrito.

But, I see a similarity between these slithery serpents and the sanctuary chimpanzees. Snakes shed their skins to accommodate growth as their bodies expand, to remove parasites that may be attached to their old skin, and to repair to the outer layer, essentially allowing them to “refresh” their skin as they grow throughout their lives. After a snake sheds its skin, it is left behind.

Isn’t this a similar process to what each individual living in the sanctuary has had to do? Coming from backgrounds where they were used as unwilling test subjects in biomedical laboratories, each has had to shed the skin of their past. Each chimpanzee, in their own way, has had to go through a process of “repair” in the hopes that they will “refresh” their lives as they grow. And in constantly doing so they, hopefully, leave their pasts behind.

So here’s to the Year of the Wood Snake! May it bring harmony and peaceful order to our beautiful natural world.”

In memory of Saundra Boren

January 28, 2025 by Katelyn

A heartfelt thank you to long-time friend of the chimpanzees, Paulette Wrisley, for sponsoring this special day of sanctuary in memory of her beloved niece, Saundra Boren.

My precious niece Saundra passed away a couple of weeks ago. I share this with you because she also loved our beloved chimps. And because we share things with your friends, right? And you are my dear friends. Saundra didn’t comment on the blog, but followed the chimps on Facebook. Every week or so she sent me a chimp photo and challenged me to identify them. It was a fun game that I will miss so much. We laughed together so often about the chimps’ shenanigans. She would just love me sponsoring a day of hope, love, home, to honor her.

Saundra lived a selfless, modest life with immense empathy for others – a strong, earnest, brilliant, and loving soul that left an enduring impression on Earth. All would attest to her boundless generosity and compassion for all.

She was so loving. And loved. Our sweet Sunny girl.”

Paulette, we are so very sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved niece. Thank you for sharing Saundra with us. I would imagine we would all hope to be remembered so lovingly. We’re sending you hugs from afar.

For Saundra and Paulette, how about a round of guessing? Many of you may pick up on some key identifiers, perhaps easy, perhaps not. I’ll come back at the end of the day and confirm. 🙂

For Doreen and happy memories

January 23, 2025 by Katelyn

Many thanks to long-time friend and supporter of the chimpanzees, Donna Hughes for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in memory and celebration of her sister, Doreen Hughes, and their special day:

“Remembering Doreen today, on our birthday. Always a bittersweet day for me, but Sponsoring The Day always makes me happy. Doreen LOVED all of the chimps at CSNW and the people who care for them. It was one of the best days EVER the day we visited in person. So, Happy Birthday, Doreen!!! You are missed every day. I know you have our dog and cats on your lap above. I have a new friend, Pumpkin, on mine. Let’s celebrate with Foxie and Friends!”

Happy Birthday to you and Doreen, Donna, from all of us here at the sanctuary! We will always hold the memories of your visit with joy and we truly appreciate you both being part of the chimpanzees’ lives for so many years. We’re thinking of you and Pumpkin today and envisioning you whooping it up, Foxie-style, in whatever way feels best. Maybe a pirouette or two thrown in. 🙂
