Making some noise

January 7, 2013 by Elizabeth

Chimpanzees are quiet most of the time.  In fact, as I write this it’s completely silent in the playroom.  In times of excitement, though, chimps can be quite vocal.  The Cle Elum Seven often pant hoot in anticipation of mealtime, or right after they’ve been given access to an area that had been closed off.  Today there was lots of displaying and pant hooting when the chimps re-entered the playroom after lunch.  Everyone except for Negra got in on the action (Negra likes to stay out of drama).  Here are a few photos of Jody pant hooting during the excitement.

In the video below you’ll see Jamie and Foxie displaying. You’ll notice that they have somewhat different styles. Jamie likes to drum on a barrel to raise the noise level, but even petite Foxie makes an impression.

In Memory of Riley

January 1, 2013 by Elizabeth

Janet Henry recently sponsored a day in honor of Riley, a friend’s beloved dog who passed away recently after being hit by a car.  What a truly sweet way to honor Riley and her family.  Thank you, Janet!

We’re occasionally visited at the sanctuary by two of the neighbor’s dogs who love to bark at and play chase with the chimpanzees out on Young’s Hill.  🙂

Letting loose

December 31, 2012 by Elizabeth

As we were finishing up cleaning the playroom this morning, we caught two unusual suspects — Annie and Negra — in a pretty wacky game.  For those of you just tuning in, Annie is the least dominant chimpanzee at CSNW.  She is gentle and shy, and when she arrived here in 2008 she didn’t have the confidence to play with anyone except for her best friend Missy.  And Negra is the oldest of the Cle Elum Seven, and prefers to spend the vast majority of her time under a blanket.  So it was pretty special to see these two ladies letting loose this morning.

Thank you, Phillippa Kassover!

December 31, 2012 by Elizabeth

Phillippa Kassover has sponsored today for the chimpanzees.  Phillippa first learned of the Cle Elum Seven earlier this year from the media coverage on the Taylor Bridge wildfire, and she suggested that we take today to celebrate new beginnings!  We’re running with Phillippa’s suggestion and setting up a New Year’s Eve dinner forage for the chimps in the playroom tonight.  Here’s to a happy and safe 2013!

For Julie and Rob Sweet

December 25, 2012 by Elizabeth

Merry Christmas, everyone!  Jean Bengston has also sponsored today in honor of Julie and Rob Sweet, and it’s an exciting morning here at the chimp house.  The chimpanzees are eagerly anticipating the party that the caregivers are busy setting up.  Check back later for photos and/or video of today’s celebration.

Here is one of my favorite photos of Foxie checking out a new Christmas troll doll:

Burrito Love

December 17, 2012 by Elizabeth

I can honestly say that Burrito puts a smile on my face every day. He has a certain mischievous yet vulnerable charm that is impossible to resist.

Burrito has a big day coming up right after the holidays. He’s turning 30 on January 6th! There are several ways you can wish the man a happy birthday: you can become his Pal and support him monthly by clicking here, join Team Burrito here, or sponsor his birthday (here) to make sure he has the best party ever.

In honor of Pickles

December 16, 2012 by Elizabeth

Lisa Buckley has sponsored today in honor of Pickles the pit bull.  Pickles was Lisa’s Aunt Conny’s beloved dog, who passed away recently at the age of 14.  Lisa says that Pickles was so sweet and loveable that she should have been a “spokesdog” for pit bulls everywhere!  In honor of Pickles, we put out all of the chimpanzees’ dog-themed toys today.  🙂

Thanks, Lisa, for honoring such a sweet soul.
