Chimpanzees are quiet most of the time. In fact, as I write this it’s completely silent in the playroom. In times of excitement, though, chimps can be quite vocal. The Cle Elum Seven often pant hoot in anticipation of mealtime, or right after they’ve been given access to an area that had been closed off. Today there was lots of displaying and pant hooting when the chimps re-entered the playroom after lunch. Everyone except for Negra got in on the action (Negra likes to stay out of drama). Here are a few photos of Jody pant hooting during the excitement.
In the video below you’ll see Jamie and Foxie displaying. You’ll notice that they have somewhat different styles. Jamie likes to drum on a barrel to raise the noise level, but even petite Foxie makes an impression.

as soon as I seen the drum,I KNEW,it was JAMIE.. she tends to beat it rhythmically ,, its like a gradual build up to her very fine tuned displays, Foxie has quite a little bounce to her step,, she looks so cute,, Its so wonderful that they are given this opportunity,, they seem to enjoy it very much,, wonderful to see that their every faucet of chimp behaviors are so respected … and catered to,, thank you CSNW..

*hands downTHE best blog ever* A while back you showed us a video of chimp behavior and your caregivers response to them (LOVED IT). So I’m wondering if you ALWAYS use submissive behaviors when they display, or maybe only when they display ‘at ‘ you? Ie : adverted gaze, bent wrist?

Great question. I think this is the video you’re referring to: https://chimpsnw.org/2009/12/caregivers-use-of-chimpanzee-behaviors/
Yes, when we are the target of a display, we respond submissively, typically by averting our gaze and making ourselves a little smaller. It’s usually Jamie who displays at us, and she seems to appreciate these gestures of respect.

That’s exactly the video. I saw a show on animal planet called Fatal Attractions (and of course ‘Travis’is on). One of the owners speaks quite a bit of fulfilling a void for herself and her empty nest by raising infant chimps that are now teenagers. I noticed she would scold them and interact with them as you would a human child. It was all very sad, on so many levels. I pray that JRs’ chimps Conner & Kramer are made famous by becoming the stars of a sanctuary and NOTHING else. Thank you for the follow up.
