Negra, Routine, and Compromise

June 12, 2014 by Elizabeth

We’ve written before on the blog about our daily routine here at the sanctuary, and why routine is important to the chimpanzees. At mealtimes, we ask the chimps to shift to a separate area of the chimp house so that we can close off and clean the area they’ve just evacuated. If one of the chimps chooses to stay behind, they know that they’re choosing not to participate in the meal, and they know that another meal will be served in a few hours. Because of this consistent routine, the chimps are never blindsided by the consequences of their decisions.

The chimpanzees are pretty motivated by food, so this routine works very well most of the time. Occasionally, a chimpanzee will decide they’d rather skip breakfast and have the playroom to themselves for a little while than join the others in the greenhouse for a meal. If this happens, we don’t sweat it. We love that they’re now able to make decisions about how and where they want to spend their time.

We do make one exception to this “if you don’t shift, you forfeit the meal” routine. When we set up a forage outside on Young’s Hill, we don’t require that the chimpanzees go out on the hill to eat. Though they’ve become increasingly comfortable with the wide open spaces of the outdoors since we opened the hill three years ago, they still feel safer inside or in the enclosed greenhouse, and we don’t want to push them too far out of their comfort zone before they’re ready. Most of the chimpanzees participate enthusiastically in Young’s Hill forages, but Negra is sometimes hesitant to venture out with the others. When that happens, we happily serve her some fruit or veggies in the greenhouse.

This morning we scattered the chimps’ breakfast fruit on the hill and most of the chimps ran out as soon as we opened the door. Negra watched from the doorway for a moment but ultimately retreated back inside. So JB grabbed some fruit from the kitchen, and she enjoyed it in the comfort of the greenhouse.

Tomorrow is Negra’s 41st birthday (and the 6th anniversary of the chimps’ arrival at the sanctuary!), and we will be throwing her a fancy tea party fit for the queen she is. If you haven’t already, please make a donation in honor of Negra, and in celebration of sanctuary.

The Truth About Burrito

June 9, 2014 by Elizabeth

Burrito is a handsome guy. When you see a face like this:

you might think it belongs to a suave and dignified gentleman. But Burrito has a silly side. In fact, he’s all silly side. And he, like the rest of us, loves a good slinky.

Gifts From Friends

June 1, 2014 by Elizabeth

We’ve written on the blog before about supporters Diane and Syd Marcus’s amazingly creative and thoughtful care packages for the chimpanzees. They always choose personalized gifts for each of the chimps, tailored to their individual interests. In one of these packages last year, Diane and Syd included a French Dora the Explorer doll for Foxie, which became possibly Foxie’s favorite Dora of all time. French Dora was eventually loved to death, but today we received another package from Diane and Syd with another French Dora! Foxie was beside herself. I was unable to get any photos of Foxie with her new Dora for the first hour that she had her, because she took her to a private spot for some snuggling.

For lunch today, we set up a forage on Young’s Hill, and Dora accompanied Foxie on her travels. (She had already lost her pants by this time, but no one seemed to mind.)

When Foxie’s mouth was too full of food, she tossed Dora on her back for safe keeping.

Thanks to Diane and Syd for always enriching the chimps’ lives in unique and special ways.

Grooming up close

May 29, 2014 by Elizabeth

I was playing tug of war with Burrito in the greenhouse the other day when Negra approached and sat herself down in front of Burrito, waiting to be groomed. Burrito took the hint. Be sure to turn your volume up to hear Burrito’s tooth clacking, lip smacking, and Bronx cheers.

Annie and Missy: Now and Then

May 25, 2014 by Elizabeth

While staff and volunteers were cleaning the greenhouse before breakfast this morning, Annie and Missy bided their time with a little wrestling.

And just because, here’s one of my favorite classic Annie and Missy play sessions from about five years ago.

Here’s to another five years of play faces and breathy laughter.

Jody and the Bamboo

May 20, 2014 by Elizabeth

Jody loves to harvest her own plants from Young’s Hill. In addition to a variety of wild plants that grow out there, we have planted several groves of bamboo generously donated by Provitro Biosciences. While Missy appreciates the bamboo for its climbing potential, Jody prefers to break off shoots and eat the leaves.

I snapped the following photos the other day when Jody brought this bamboo inside to enjoy.

And as I was typing this blog post, Jody dragged this giant piece of bamboo in from outside. Let’s hope the bamboo survives Jody’s love.

Choice

May 18, 2014 by Elizabeth

The chimpanzees spend a lot of time in the doorway that leads from the greenhouse to Young’s Hill, deciding whether they want to go outside. Sometimes they decide against it and opt to stay in the sunny greenhouse or hang out in the indoor playroom. But I think these moments of choice are just as vital to captive chimpanzees as fresh air and sunshine and room to run.

This morning I’ve seen Negra sit in the doorway to Young’s Hill several times, taking in the view of the hill and pondering. She hasn’t yet ventured out, but I imagine that seeing two acres of green grass in front of her is something that she never imagined during her decades in a lab cage.
