So Many Friends

May 18, 2025 by Diana

It’s been quite the busy weekend! Central Washington University held a Legacy in Every Gesture: Celebrating CWU’s Primate Program, which included a day of events. including the dedication of a memorial honoring Washoe, Tatu, Moja, Dar, and Loulis, the chimpanzees who lived on campus and began CWU’s primate program.

Many of the staff here began our careers in the primate program, and the weekend’s events were significant to us. We are grateful for CWU President Jim Wohlpart and First Lady Sasha Wohlpart for truly honoring Washoe and her family and for bringing together people who had connections to the program over a thirty year span together this weekend.

Roger and Debbie Fouts, the founders of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute who advocated for chimpanzees well before others in their field did, attended the events and were honored throughout the day. It was wonderful to see them again. Crickette Sanz gave a moving speech that told her story of working for Washoe, starting as a CWU undergraduate student, and how that led her to establishing the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project in northern Republic of Congo, where, among other things, they use noninvasive technology to monitor the chimpanzees, resulting in new discoveries about their ecology and behavior and illustrating how important it is to support the protection of the dwindling populations of chimpanzees in the wild.

Ron Dotzauer, former trustee, told the story of how the innovative building for the chimpanzees came to fruition, thanks to some political savvy and people in high positions who cared about animals. The chimpanzees, of course, no longer live on campus. Tatu and Loulis are at the Fauna Foundation in Quebec, and the site where their home was is now dorms. Dorms that now have a memorial in front that remembers the chimpanzees who once lived there.

We were glad to be able to host some of the attendees, including friends we hadn’t seen in decades, for a visit to the sanctuary the next day. Then it was off to Dru Bru for a successful and fun pint night fundraiser that the Primate Awareness Network organized!

The chimpanzees were very interested in the visitors. Terry spent the most time outside quietly observing everyone, and Jamie demanded to see everyone’s footwear.

These photos are not from this weekend, but I feel they fit in with the uplifting feeling that the weekend’s events and connecting with old and new friends manifested.

Nothing’s Better!

May 17, 2025 by Kelsi

The other day I found Jamie in this magnificent nest, with a bag of chow. As you will see in the video, Jamie seemed so content and a little silly. She was making me laugh because she would roll up the bag of chow and then put it in her pelvic pocket while she made these happy little grunts. She was comfortable in her nest so I brought her a new bonobo book, because nothing is better than cozying up to a new book!

The best place to be

May 15, 2025 by Anna

We’re currently experiencing another blustery day in Central Washington. Fortunately, the chimps have just the solution for escaping the wind but still enjoying the sunshine…  The greenhouses of course!

Speaking of Central Washington, there are a couple of upcoming exciting chimp related events happening in our county this weekend!

Tomorrow, Central Washington University will be hosting several events honoring the legacy of Washoe Chimpanzee. Check out this link for more details!

For Saturday, CWU’s Primate Awareness Network has also organized the following opportunities (details below)!

The chimps are playing, the sun is shining, the wind is ripping… Life is good at the sanctuary! I collected a lot of short video clips the past few days and I thought today was the perfect day to put them into a video for you all. No general theme, but life is good! Check out today’s video, up above!

Hope you all are having a wonderful week!

Blustery Day

May 13, 2025 by Kelsi

Spring in this area is beautiful, especially with all the wildflowers in bloom, but with spring comes the often unrelenting wind. Today was one of those days where it was so windy no one wanted to go outside. However, Saturday was perfect. So perfect, that Negra marched right outside and climbed up on a platform. After a while she came down to do one of her favorite things in spring, eat grass.

This isn’t a perfect picture, but it is our photo evidence that Negra did in fact climb up this platform:

Negra, enjoying one of her favorite things on a nice day!

And my favorite photo:

In honor of Jody

May 13, 2025 by Katelyn

Thank you, Tobin, for sponsoring a day of sanctuary in memory of Jody for her birthday, which we celebrate on Mother’s Day.

*(Some of us are still playing catch-up from having been away to attend the NAPSA conference last week – me, and me -, so apologies for this later than Tobin intended sponsorship. Jody is of course in our hearts every day, especially during this beautiful season and we appreciate all the love surrounding her.)

A message shared from Tobin:

“As we celebrate the day in which the sanctuary celebrated Jody’s birthday, I am at a loss of words to add to what Diana wrote on the CSNW blog on April 27th. Those who lived with Jody at the sanctuary, and the those humans who provided for her needs, were indeed so fortunate to have had her in their lives. Among the comments which readers posted, I especially felt the words of a commenter who wrote, ‘Besides everything, I miss most seeing (Jody’s) interactions with her chimpanzee family and how she took such good care with everyone.’

We do not know for certain the day – let alone the year – when Jody’s mother gave birth to her. In a world unencumbered by the scourge that is human behavior, Jody should have been raised by her mother throughout her life. Unfortunately, much was not to be as it should have been in Jody’s live. One day, though, she and six other chimpanzees arrived at what would be their sanctuary in the Cascade Mountains. There, at last, Jody and her friends were able to live.

And it is those memories of Jody living in abundance on Young’s Hill and in her domicile that I remember – and treasure. It is my hope, therefore, that on this day that we cherish our love and memories of our dear Jody on what would have been – to our best estimate – her 50th birthday.

I love her always, and pray that joy surrounds her soul – her ‘anima’ – forever.”
