The Rules of Food

July 25, 2024 by Anna

Today I got two decent photos of two chimps in two separate groups. Willy B and Jamie. My mind started to ponder the question, what do these two have in common? As it turns out, one pretty major thing stands out.

They’re both EXTREMELY food-motivated. They rule meal times with an iron fist, often trying to dominate their group mates and intimidate their way into getting extra food. They’re usually first to enrichment food puzzles and have a way of making sure they get access to them as much as possible. For example, we’ve seen Willy B collect all the chopstick “tools” used for getting food out of certain puzzles. This is his crafty way of ensuring he has first dibs on the treats. Jamie on the other hand, has a domineering presence about her. Annie and Foxie (low ladies on the totem pole) know to steer clear of her during meals.

Food dominance is widespread within chimpanzee groups and these dominance trends are seen throughout both groups at the sanctuary, not just with Willy B and Jamie. A common hierarchy we see is between Missy and Annie.  Even though Missy and Annie are BFFs, some tension still comes between them during mealtimes, with Missy wanting her food served first and Annie seeming uncomfortable if she is served close to Missy.  On the other side of the coin, Negra knows she can always get Missy to give up some of her food if she whimpers dramatically and holds out her hand. Missy knows it’s time to pay the queen.

Annie, Missy and Jamie:

Usually male chimps are more dominant to female chimps, but no one told Mave this rule.  She has been known to chase Gordo around, demanding he give up some of his food. Meanwhile, Willy B isn’t afraid to assert his dominance over Mave.

Mave:

While food hierarchy among chimpanzees is completely normal, it’s also up to us caregivers to help mitigate some of the aggression and to make sure everyone gets to eat. We give as many options as we can for locations for the chimps to eat and try positive reinforcement stationing techniques to encourage the more dominant chimpanzees to stay in their designated places during mealtime. Meals are often served directly to each chimp so we can monitor and make sure they are able to generally eat their entire available portions.

For forages, we cut up the food in many pieces and spread it as far as possible around their enclosures. It’s important to find a balance and not do too many forages because the hierarchy is always present and affects the quantity and types of food each chimpanzee has access to.

Food is one of the most enriching aspects of the chimpanzees’ day to day lives. It makes it that much more important that we are careful with its delivery.

In memory of Harrison and Rita

July 25, 2024 by Katelyn

Our many thanks to Ashley Stroud for her annual sponsorship of a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and bovines in “Continuing a legacy of love, in memory of Harrison & Rita.”

We truly appreciate this, Ashley, and hope today brings many happy memories your way.

Best of Both Worlds

July 24, 2024 by Kelsi

Today has been a busy day, well for the humans anyways, for the chimps it has been very pleasant! It has finally cooled off a little and I think we are all thankful for a break from the hundred degree heat! The chimps spent their day playing, grooming, foraging, and a little hooting and hollering. In the video, you will find Dora and Honey B playing in their regularly-scheduled hookie session from their group to have a solo play session while we clean around them. On the other side of the chimp house, Jamie, Missy, and Negra had a very sweet grooming session before their lunch forage!

It wouldn’t be Wednesday without some bonus photos!

It must be Christmas in July because our foyer is full:

The greatest honor you can have is to receive a kiss from Negra:

If you’d like to help supply the sanctuary with food, enrichment, medicines, supplies, and other necessities, please check out our Christmas in July drive and help empty our wish lists!

Burrito and The New Big Blue Ball

July 23, 2024 by Jenna

Recently, we were donated another giant bowl and big ball! Thank you to all of our donors!

These larger items are used as furniture in the chimp enclosures so they get a ton of usage! Burrito was especially jazzed to see the new items, which you will see in today’s video!

EKG Training

July 22, 2024 by J.B.

I love watching the chimps learn new ways to participate in their own healthcare. We’ve had a KardiaMobile device for a little while now, thanks to a generous donor who purchased it from our wish list, but only after making sufficient progress with other medical behaviors was our PRT team able to begin setting their sights on training everyone for cooperative EKGs. In theory it’s a simple behavior to train, since it doesn’t involve any pain or discomfort, but getting a chimpanzee to sit still for 30 seconds straight, while at the same time getting their friends to wait their turn, can be a challenge. Kudos to our training team and to our current EKG champion, Willy B. But watch your back, Willy—once we adjust the platform to accommodate ol’ stubby fingers (aka Terry), you may have some competition!

Hey, speaking of wish lists and generous donors…if you’d like to help supply the sanctuary with food, enrichment, medicines, supplies, and other necessities, please check out our Christmas in July drive and help empty our wish lists!

Foxie’s New Doll

July 21, 2024 by Grace

If you’ve followed us for a while, you know about Foxie and her love of dolls. She almost always has at least one doll with her- whether it be a troll doll, a Dora the Explorer doll, or one of her many others. She carries them in her hip pockets and on her back, she plays with them by herself and with caregivers, and she curls up with them when she’s relaxing. I love how much she loves them and today was especially sweet- Diana gave Foxie an American Girl doll that a generous donor sent us. It’s bigger than most all of Foxie’s other dolls, but as soon as she saw it she started moving away from Burrito and Jamie (who were also in the front rooms) so that Diana could give it to her away from the others. You’ll have to watch the video to see how she reacted, but I promise it’s worth it. 🙂

I think it’s important to recognize Foxie’s background when we share a video like this to provide context.

Foxie was born on August 8, 1976 (so she has her 48th birthday coming up!) at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. Before coming to CSNW, she was used in hepatitis vaccine research and as a breeder for the biomedical research industry.

Our sweet Foxie had four babies during her years in biomedical research- which means that they were all taken away from her when they were very young, sometimes even just days old. She had a set of twin boys (who both passed away in the labs), a daughter Angie (who lives at Save the Chimps), and Kelsey (who went to Chimp Haven in 2018). Foxie spent 32 years of her life in biomedical research before finally getting to experience sanctuary.

Within a month of arriving, Foxie adopted her first troll doll. We had no way of knowing that she would take so immediately to dolls or that her love for them would last so long. We will never know exactly what’s going on in her head when she loves on her dolls, but we do know that they provide her comfort. For that, I am endlessly grateful.

Speaking of the comfort Foxie gets from her collection of dolls, don’t forget about our Christmas in July celebration! Celebrate summer by helping us empty our three wish-lists(Jerrol’s, Chewy, and Amazon)! Many items have already been purchased and we are so grateful to everyone who’s helped to spread some joy in this super hot July.

Happy Birthday Betsy!

July 20, 2024 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Today is another day of celebration here at the sanctuary as we celebrate Betsy Cow‘s 17th birthday! Betsy celebrated with some freshly picked willow branches and wild roses provided by Dr. Erin to her and her herd. Betsy enjoyed not only eating her freshly picked snacks, but also getting some scratches with the willow branches! Caregiver Krissy also reported that she got the honor of being licked by Betsy for the first time…the first of many if I know Betsy!

Betsy delicately eats her wild rose leaves to avoid the thorns. Look at her fabulous eye lashes!

This one is my favorite, look at her tongue reaching out to snack on some wild rose leaves!

Gorgeous Betsy enjoying a taste of her willow branches.

Betsy has had a difficult year, as her son and fellow member of her herd, Nutmeg, passed away. Life without Nutmeg was an adjustment for us all, but the loss of his sweet personality and presence has undoubtedly been most felt by those who knew and loved him best – Betsy, Meredith, and Honey.

Nutmeg and Betsy

Thankfully, these lovely bovine ladies continue to have each other to enjoy life with. The summer brings the excitement of moving to different pastures to find and consume all the best grasses (and enjoy the shade on these hot days!). Betsy is looking great out on pasture, enjoying the opportunity to graze all the time. We are so lucky to get to share Betsy’s 17th birthday with her, and to be able to provide love and care to her, Meredith, and Honey every day in addition to the 15 chimpanzees. Happy birthday, Betsy!

If you’d like to continue the celebration for Betsy, Gordo, and friends, please consider helping to empty our three wish lists for Christmas in July! Among the many items on our wish lists are supplies to build new food puzzles for the chimpanzees, which are a long lasting way to enrich the lives of our chimpanzee friends. We provide food puzzles to the chimpanzees every day which provide mental stimulation for them as they work to solve the various puzzles, and offer a fun way to get unique treats they otherwise don’t receive very often (like vanilla pudding or jello – which also can be found on our wish lists!).

We have partnered with Jerrol’s, a family-owned shop that has been in nearby Ellensburg since 1947. See our brand new custom wish list. Jerrol’s will deliver gifts right to our door at the sanctuary!

We also have a brand new Chewy wish list! We will be able to get some supplements and toys for the chimpanzees and cows directly from Chewy now.

We aren’t getting rid of our Amazon wish list entirely just yet, and we’ve added more items to that list too.

Thank you for being Sanctuary Santas and celebrating Christmas in July by helping us stock up on some staples for the cows and chimpanzees and treating the chimpanzees to new and fun food puzzles and toys.
