Some Feelings

February 11, 2023 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Today has been a very tranquil Saturday at the chimp house. Chimps are grooming, interns are interning, caregivers are preparing enrichment, and the sun is OUT. While doing this mornings perimeter check around the expanded outdoor enclosure, I found myself enjoying the rays of sunshine and thinking of how lucky we are to know these 16 chimpanzees. I think of what they went through before being able to touch grass, or climb trees, or live in huge enclosures where they can be themselves and make decisions for once. I have to admit, my heart still breaks whenever those thoughts make their way in. And I have to admit, it doesn’t get easier. The more you learn about their past and also the past of other chimps living in sanctuary care around the USA, the more it hits you: they are who they are because they have been through so much, that they DESERVE to be themselves. They deserve to show us whatever side of themselves they are feeling like showing, whether it is a gentle moment like getting an elusive hand kiss from Negra or accepting the fate of getting hit with poop by Jamie.

Without going into too much details, last week I was talking to another colleague who had worked with other groups of chimps and I learned about how different the groups of chimps were in that sanctuary depending on the laboratory they were in. While some groups are bold and confident, other groups from other labs exhibit more abnormal behaviors like rocking and self harming. For some reason last night that’s all I could think about before bed, how did we get to the point in society where this was allowed and justifiable in the name of science? And why is this something still allowed to happen to other species? I think it all comes back to how humans have a false sense of superiority and until that changes I don’t think our species is going to be able to make the reparations needed to compensate for harm caused.

Now that we are all in our feelings, please enjoy some photos of chimps thriving in sanctuary care 🙂

Don’t worry Jamie, no body can see you!

Happy Birthday, Stanley!

February 11, 2023 by Katelyn

Thank you so much to our wonderful friend of the chimpanzees and bovines, Jamie Reagin, for sponsoring this day of sanctuary, “In honor of my father, Stanley Friedman, on his 92nd birthday!”

From all of us here, Happy Birthday to you, Stanley! We’re so thrilled to get to celebrate such a special occasion with you and hope your day is wonderful!

Unseen Clips

February 10, 2023 by Jenna

It’s Nutmeg’s Birthday!

Not only did we have Marcie Milam sponsor this day of sanctuary for Nutmeg’s 8th Birthday, Paulette Wrisley sponsored the day as well! Thank you so much, both Marcie and Paulette! Nutmeg is enjoying a day full of sunshine with Honey, Betsy, and Meredith.

Today, I was not sure what I wanted to do for the blog. My mind was blank. Thankfully, I had some awesome unseen video footage from the past month! Please enjoy today’s video featuring the unseen clips!

Shout out to Kelsi who captured this photo of Mave in a giant box:

Happy Birthday, Nutmeg!

February 10, 2023 by Katelyn

Heartfelt gratitude to Marcie Milam for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in honor of Nutmeg Steer on his 8th birthday! It makes our hearts sing to see this sweet guy celebrated!

“Happy Birthday to Betsy’s baby boy, Nutmeg. May you continue to always have a free and comfortable life….and a great head of hair.”

Happy Birthday, Nutmeg! How fortunate and honored we are to get to celebrate you! (And to our absolute delight, we have a second sponsor a day coming up in his honor!).

For those of you who may be new to the sanctuary and/or our tiny herd of bovines, theirs are both common and unique histories with many interesting twists and turns of fate. You can learn more about Nutmeg and his family and how they came to be part of our sanctuary family by clicking here. And I would be monstrously remiss in not sharing this link to Nutmeg’s early minutes, days and years at Farm Sanctuary where he was so fortunate to have been born. (There are also some baby Meredith photos to be found there!).

We never get enough of baby Nutmeg photos (courtesy of Farm Sanctuary) in part because, obviously, and in part, because we so rarely get the opportunity to see steers grow to their adult size and live out their natural lives with their family. With Betsy having started her life in the dairy industry, Nutmeg is not the first child she has had, but he is the first child she was allowed to raise. Betsy’s and Nutmeg’s relationship is plain and clear, a love story. Not unique from any other bovine mama and her child, but just as deeply felt:

And that wonderful head of hair? He was just born that way!:

National Sibling Day Arrives Early!

February 9, 2023 by Anna

Last year for National Sibling Day, Chad wrote an excellent blog detailing the siblings and their shared familial roots at the sanctuary.  We recently received some information that has added one exciting update to this list…

A little hint before the big reveal… We have seen and noted the resemblance in these two individuals in the past but we didn’t have the records to back up any of our casual observances…

Any guesses yet? Answers below…

TERRY AND MAVE are half siblings! They share a father (Conrad).

Our Queen

February 8, 2023 by Kelsi

Negra, as we all know, is our awe-inspiring queen here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. This morning in particular, Negra was looking more regal than normal, if that can even be possible.

Often when I look at Negra, I find myself reflecting on just how resilient and amazing she really is. There are some parts of her life I will never understand how she endured and still found a way to persevere. It is a true honor when Negra graces us with her presence, whether it be a kiss, a laugh, a head nod, ordering us to dance for her, or simply just a glance.

Over the years Negra has taught me so much in life: never settle, be unapologetically yourself, always appreciate a sunny day, speak up when you are dissatisfied, life is short- take your sweet time, and to only spend time doing the things you love. I have many things to be thankful for in my career, but one of the greatest privileges is to have built a relationship with a true queen, Negra.

Please enjoy the photo series of Neggie:

Teeny Tiny Terry

February 7, 2023 by Chad de Bree

Teeny Tiny Terry sits on a teeny tiny block,

Blowing raspberries at caregivers all around the clock.

Teeny Tiny Terry is goofy with his teeny tiny friends,

Hoping that his play sessions will never come to an end.

Teeny Tiny Terry and his teeny tiny tongue,

Greets every caregivers’ hand with nothing but love.

Teeny Tiny Terry loves eating his teeny tiny food,

Making sure everything in his mouth is evenly chewed.

Teeny Tiny Terry lets out a teeny tiny hoot,

Making everyone else follow in suit.

Teeny Tiny Terry and his teeny tiny toes,

Gets caregivers’ attention for drinks from the hose.

Teeny Tiny Terry has captured all of our teeny tiny hearts,

No one could ever imagine a life being too far apart.

2: Terry and Mave play during lunch today.

3: Terry sticks his tongue out to greet caregivers in the morning.

4: Terry eats his chow biscuits during lunch.

5: Terry begins hooting as the others are doing as well.

6: Terry loves receiving drinks from hoses!
