Negra in the Sun

May 10, 2018 by Elizabeth

Often when we set up a forage outside on Young’s Hill, we set aside a small bowl of food for Negra in case she doesn’t want to go outside. Though she’s become more at ease on Young’s Hill over the years, she doesn’t spend nearly as much time out there as the other chimps, and she’s far more likely to get spooked while outside. Even now, seven years after Young’s Hill opened, you’ll hear excited caregivers announcing “Neggie’s outside!” over the radio on the occasions when Negra pushes herself out of her comfort zone.

For today’s lunch forage, Negra not only ventured out but led the group onto the hill.

Wow…what a big deal for Negra! She must be feeling really good in her skin…..and enjoying the considerations of the fine staff, and maybe also her chimp buddies. 🙂

What a beautiful picture of Negra among the foliage on Young’s Hill. Given that she is grand, and maternal, I think that one can safely conclude that Negra has a grandmotherly demeanor.

Wonderful post, J. B. and thank you so much!! Always helpful to have these insights when thinking about them and trying to understand them. I’d say they are doing exceptionally well given their early and long histories. So grateful to you guys for understanding and caring. Much love and many hugs to you all….
