A few days ago we reached a milestone – the chimpanzees have been at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest for two months. Decades in research, and now two months in sanctuary. So much has happened in that short time. We’ve learned so much about each of the chimpanzees, and they seem to be changing every day. Jamie has stopped plucking her hair, Foxie now handles enrichment and has displayed rudimentary nesting behavior, Burrito has been working on some really great displays in his expanded space, Jody’s hair is growing back in and she’s developing some muscle, Missy is playing all of the time, Annie is coming into ‘her own’ and standing up for herself, and Negra is enamored with the views out of the windows.
And now the big announcement – the chimpanzees will be in their outdoor area on August 26th!! I can’t wait to share photos and experiences of the chimps touching ground for the first time. Thank you all for you support – you’ve helped make all of this possible!
yipee…congratulations on the outdoor area…they will be so excited to finally get outdoors and they are going to love it….
WONDERFUL. What a huge amount of work has been done by the humans so that the chimpanzees can have as normal a life as is possible for chimpanzees in captivity. We are in constant awe of all you do. You are such inspiring young people and we are honored to know you. August 26 will be a HUGE day for us all….chimpanzees and humans alike. Congratulations. Can’t wait for the photos!
August 29th is Karen’s birthday so we will think of the chimps getting outside as a bd gift for her!
PS: What is happening now with Jamie and Foxie, Tixie and Princess?
hooray!

it’s gonna be a big day .. yowza yowza yowza!
happy early birthday wishes Karen!
Oh dear God, I’m already crying just reading that the chimps will be able to go outside, what a blubbering mess I’ll be all day on the 26th. Diana, it’s another miracle that brings up emotions that are so deep they can’t be fully expressed in words. I honestly don’t believe there is a higher calling than to serve in a capacity that ends suffering for those who have no voice. Just look at what can be accomplished with human compassion and collaboration. I can’t wait to tell everyone I know that the chimps are going outside ~ I wonder if I can manage to do it without bawling every time I tell someone. Is there any way we can get the video of them going outside submitted to the news networks? Anything I can do to help, please call or email me. Love to all ~ Shelly
This is the greatest news I have had since I found your site with the Rescue of the chimps….and ditto to Shelly K. I have all the pictures printed on go around work showing them off like they are my children. I am slowly getting all my animal loving friend involved and have sent them all the site so tehy can follow along with the rest of us lucky ones. I want to get a Christmas box started at work for donations for the 7, and I know with all the ones that love animals they will contribute. To think in 10 days they will be taking those first steps to the outside world where as for now they can only look out a window, from a basement without a window to the windows to the actual outdoors where they should have been for all the decades they have lost due to human ignorance. I will be looking forward to the 26th, and please do not forget to post everyones birthdays. Sorry to babble but I was thinking maybe for Chrismas you can make a calender full of the 7’s pictures and sell them I will buy quite a few for gifts…just a suggestion! I also have some telephoya lenses in teh garage not sure what size but they are very expensive and still in their cases I need to know if they are compatible with you camera, I noticed they were on your wish list on Amazon when I was ordering Foxies Birthday present!!! XOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Soory for all the typos…i am pooped and it is 100 degrees here, I meant telephoto lenses in the garage, I will did them out and send you the name and model numbers later to the contact us on the homepage, I know a man at work that is a photographer and he wants them but if you can use them I would rather donate them to you so I can help you to take a million more pictures for us!!! Okay time to stop babbling….bye for now! Shelly
YAY!!! That is SO AWESOME that they will be able to go into the outdoor enclosure!! We have all been waiting for this day!! It brings tears to my eyes already…..and I know on the 26th I will be glued to my computer waiting for the photos! Thank you so much to all of you for the GREAT photos & updates!!! 🙂
WOW!!!!!!!!!! I can already see their big inquisitive eyes wondering what it might be like out there and hear their excited pant hoots as they venture out for the first time. How wonderful to broaden their lives even more and give them the chance to feel the wind in their hair!!!! What great news!!!!
