We set up a lettuce and homemade granola forage last night for the chimpanzees in the outdoor area and had a little cook-out with vegan sausage and corn.

They look like they are having so much fun, I see Foxies with her troll, it looks like she is bald again…lol! I am currently on Ebay bidding on 4 troll dolls for her, once agin doing something I have never done before I met the Cle Elum 7, someone keeps outbidding me on a bride troll doll, we will see who wins????? I wish I could be there to give them to her when I win, but such is life, I can only dream about it!!!! Are they spending most of their days outside?? I fell like I am talking to my computer…………………….
Shelly Knapp says
Oh these photo’s are so GREAT! I’ll never get over seeing the sun shining on them and seeing them out in fresh air. Such a joy to see every activity ~ every stance ~ every expression……I love to see the chimps fully focused on something, whether it’s picking through food, holding tightly to a goodie bag or troll doll, exploring a new toy or grooming each other. Just the idea that they have something that makes them feel GOOD to focus on. Thanks so much for posting new photos so often!!! I check the site all the time and would go into “withdrawls” without my fix 🙂
Shelly Campbell/SR. CA says
I agree Shelly K…..when I get on the computer and do not see any new pics or videos, and comments from the CCC, it is depressing, then I start searching other sites, but they are just not the same, you know!!!!! I got out bid on the bride troll doll, I figure if I keep bidding, migght as well start bidding on another, the more troll dolls the merrier!!! I also found a baby chimp stuffed animal that looks soooo real , I bid on it, will be great to see Foxie or one of the other mamas take a liking to a baby chimp and want to snuggle, if they do there are more are ebay!!!
Shelly Knapp says
Hey there! So we have Jeani, Audrey, Margaret, Karen, Shelly C and Shelly K all on board with the “CCC’s” 🙂 Dee, when you’re back on, I’m betting you’ll be on board, too! Patti, Denice, Paula, Kathy, Debbie, Cindy, Mo, Roslyn, Kim, Pam?……..and who am I missing???
Cindy says
I’m missing something, what’s the “CCC’s”. I was out of the loop for a few days and seem to have missed something big!!!
Shelly Knapp says
Hi Cindy ~ there seems to be a group of us who blog often and we were thinking that it might be nice to reference each other as a group with something nicer sounding than “regular bloggers”…..so we’re trying out CCC’s – Cle Elum Chimp Chatters. Whaddya think?
Cindy says
Sounds good to me, thanks for the info!! I was in the dark.
Jeani Goodrichn says
I agree, a day without the chimp blog is not a day I’ll see very soon! When I am out I go to my computer as soon as I come in the door and after I give my 2 kitties a love and a treat. It is one of the first things I do in the morning and the last thing I check before bed. Thanks for all the photos and blogs. My heart is filled with joy and warm fuzzies to get through the day and to give me sweet dreams at night.
I need to put a check in the mail for the washer and dryer. Do you take a card over the phone or online? I’m so bad at getting things in snail mail!
Sweet dreams.
Shelly Knapp says
I loved reading your blog Jeani ~ it makes me feel more “normal”…..sometimes I think I’m on this site so much it’s nuts! 😉 Boy these chimp’s have really captured out hearts…
Debbie says
Great photos, it is so heartwarming seeing them so busy all the time and enjoying themselves outside. It is so amazing to watch everyday.
I love the idea of Cle Elum Chimp Chatters CCC’s, like others I thought I was the only “addict” to this site. This is the first place I go when I am online.
Before I go to bed I have to check in one last time to make sure I have not missed anything. I’m absoulutly in LOVE with Jamie, Jody, Foxie, Negra, Missy, Annie and that handsome devil Burrito.
How about the video of his display the other day, how impressive was that? He reminded me of Cozy from Chimp Eden, I love Cozy. It was through the CE website that i found this site and the rest is history.
I like the many different ways that we can contribute. Cash is king but it seems alot more personal when you can go on the Amazon wish list and buy an item that the staff needs, also I personally like when they list a toy, it’s like spoiling a grandchild, buy them anything they want.
It is terrific to hear that we are half way there for the funds for the washer dryer. Great work, lets get this done, there is a special thing going on here.
God Bless our 7 from heaven.
Have a great Labor Day everyone!!!!
Shelly Knapp says
Hi Debbie ~ so glad you like the idea of the CCC’s ~ sounds like it’s catching on 🙂 How did the Chimp Eden site direct you to this one? Was it a blog? I haven’t seen a link on CE’s site…..I think it’s GREAT that you found the Cle Elum from S. Africa!
Debbie says
Hi Shelly,
On the CE website there is a “Comment Question and Answer ” page, on June 30th the following was posted:
“”Comment / Question : 30 June 2008 – Posted by Pat S
Have been watching the progress of the “Cle Elum Seven”, the chimps who spent roughly 30 years in tiny cages in a medical lab. Very entertaining and heartwarming. There are still about 1200 chimps in US labs, and legislation called the Great Ape Protection Act is currently in US Congress. We all need to fight for it. Go to this website to see how. http://ga1.org/campaign/gapa“””
So from CE in South Africa to me in Boston and on to Cle Elum Washington is how it happened. So a big thanks to Pat S., could it be Patti who posts here?
Shelly Knapp says
Hi Debbie ~ that’s really fun! Patty C blogs on this site – although very possible that Pat S does as well ~ especially since she’s been watching the progress of the 7. Forgive me Patty C! I spelled your name with an “i” above and it’s spelled with a “y” :-{
Pam says
(CCC) Although I don’t often actually blog – I do enjoy all the thoughts and wonderful ideas (like Margaret and Karen’s washer/dryer fund and Cindy’s suggestion of Safeway cards)
I, too, am on here first thing in the morning and last thing at night – so thank you, Shelly K, for including me… the “CCC” idea gets my vote too.
Shelly Knapp says
That’s great Pam! The purpose for CCC is to recognize and communicate with the group of folks here, this blog community, and know/understand when we send out a message to the CCC, that we’re communicating with folks who read the blogs on a regular basis. So glad you’re on board! 🙂
Audrey says
Jeani asked above about donating online with debit or credit cards for the washer/dryer, & I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) that you can click on the ” Donate Now” button above to do it that way. There is a place at the bottom to put a “Gift Note”, and I’m thinking you could put “for washer/dryer” in that spot if you want to. Do you think that would work?
Diana says
Yes, Audrey – thanks for answering Jeani’s question about donating online. that’s exactly the way to do it.
Also, regarding the documentary: Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History. You can buy this from the releasechimps website, so part of the money will help their important work: http://www.releasechimps.org/store/
Tamela says
Shelly K,
I don’t post often, but I’m here every morning and night. I too am an addict, a chimp/gorilla/animal addict. Please included me in the CCC group too. Also, I would love to know a little about everyone. Could we or should we do that here? Maybe one day we could all meet and put our ideas together, start a project, or take a trip to Africa to volunteer at a sanctuary.
Shelly Knapp says
Hi Tamela ~ I love it!! Okay ~ Diana…..would you folks be willing to consider creating a similar “home” entitled “CCC’s” (Cle Elum Chimp Chatters) like you did for the washer/dryer project? A CCC spot would allow regular bloggers to coalesce for Group Discussions without having to click through all of the previous posts to “find” comments, respond and then wonder whether other folks “found” the comments so that they can in turn, respond, etc. That way, we can learn who all of the most avid participant are, learn a little bit more about each other such as where are we from, how did we learn about this sanctuary, are there projects we’d like to propose to support the sanctuary, etc. Thanks so much in advance for your consideration of the request Diana! 🙂
Shelly Campbell/SR. CA says
Diana, I have been addicted to ebay this weekend, bidding on troll dolls and I came across a baby chimp, it looks so real, the lady I bought it from said it is suppose to be an interactive chimp but she could not get it to work. I won the bid this morning and won a troll doll bid last night. When the chimp arrives can you maybe video the response from Foxis and the others, I just thought the way she snuggles with her troll dolls maybe she would love this baby chimp, his hands, feets, face and belly are made of vinyl, he has soft fur and black eyes. If it scares them let me know but if they love it she has one more and I can buy it for them! Thanks! Shelly C
Jeani Goodrich says
Tamela, What a wonderful idea about getting together to meet and work on a chimp cause or travel to Africa.
Audrey and Diana – Thanks for answering that question. I will donate right after I catch up on the blog.
Shelly K. – I also like your idea about the CCC blog spot. I forget where I left a note so I am scrolling through several comment sections to find out the scoop!
dee says
everybody’s lookin’ good – and it looks like they’re enjoying their picnic, what a great idea!
WOW, I wasn’t able to do much personal stuff on the computer this week and it looks like I’ve missed out on a bunch of way cool stuff!
now I gotta catch up!
heya ShellyK – count me in for the CCC – yeah!
so good to be back – I truly missed these guys!
yeah – I’d love to go to Africa – and help at sanctuaries like J.A.C.K and Tacugama in Sierra Leone ..
Tamela says
Dee, I’ve thought about it. A group of us get together and go to Africa to help out at a sanctuary. Can you just imagine if it’s a sanctuary with orphaned baby chimpanzees; how in the world would they ever get us to leave?
dee says
you know it Tamela –
the African sanctuaries I mentioned do have orphaned baby chimpanzees – especially J.A.C.K.-that’s how they started..
the stories of these poor babies is just beyond heartbreaking..
these past couple of months they’ve taken in/saved some more babies ..
blows my mind that some of these babies (all kinds of animals and bushmeat) are still being sold in the markets there .. this is 2008 – an endangered species & a real tragedy .. God Have Mercy On Our Souls
Tamela says
Unfortunately, shockingly, and sadly, bushmeat is not just sold in the markets in Africa, but around the world. This is an article from 2006:
http://primatology.net/2006/07/19/ape-meat-sold-in-us-european-black-markets/
Ape Meat Sold in U.S., European Black Markets
“Justin Brashares, a professor of wildlife ecology at the University of California, Berkeley and his team, show that they have found the, …illegal meat in markets in Paris, Brussels, London, New York City, Montreal, Toronto, and Los Angeles.”
dee says
yeah – I had not seen this article, tho unfortunately I’m very aware of all this also through all my research, it’s not just in or from Africa – all over the place, and thriving .. a cryin’ shame ..
Shelly Knapp says
Beam me up Scotty, I want to leave and come back when we’ve evolved from being cannibals. I love the idea of a group going to Africa……we really need to get our “thread” to a place linked to this blog where we can commune….I almost forgot/lost this blog. Tamela, you’re welcome to email me at [email protected] just so we have each others email address until a thread is set up.
Cindy says
I haven’t been to their website lately but there’s a sanctuary in Uganda, Ngamba Island, on Google their website is under construction, I will pursue it, but they had a variety of opportunities, week periods and longer to volunteer and live there working with the bushmeat orphans. Count me in, my bag is packed, I have wanted to go for a long time but would love to go with others interested. I think this sanctuary actually works with a travel outfitter in Africa so booking is pretty straight forward. Shelly and anyone else, when can you leave????!!!!!
Cindy says
I started seaching on Google and it kind of looks like direct contact might not be possible, just kind of got that from reading between the search lines, their website is not up and running but there might be other opportunities and it’s not clear what is available at that sanctuary. There is Sanga-yang in Cameroon but that used to have a 6 month commitment and some fluency in French to be accepted there. Some of my information is old we’ll have to do some more research. We do need a forum for all this chatter!!
Cindy says
OK, I’m wrong again, wild frontiers uganda has one day and overnight trips with direct contact plus be a caregiver for a day visits with the Ngamba Island chimps. The sanctuary itself may have longer duration visits possible with more care opportunities.
You think possibly I’m interested!!!!! It would be so great to be there with other dedicated CCC people !!!!!!
Try http://www.wildfrontiers.co.ug/ngambavisits and see where that gets you or just google wild frontiers uganda, that’s how I got there.
Shelly Knapp says
Oh Cindy, God bless you for doing the research. I really hope that a group can go soon ~ for me, I’m afraid, the date is not in sight due to limited resources. I would be your biggest cheerleader though!!!!!!!! I also believe in miracles so don’t count me out entirely 😉
