Burrito strutting his stuff

August 30, 2008 by Sarah

When we say that a chimpanzee is “displaying,” we referring to the behaviors chimps use to show us that they’re in charge. For Burrito, this typically includes standing up bipedally (on two legs), pilo erect hair (puffing up to look bigger), running around, and usually banging or jumping off of something. It’s quite impressive to watch. We didn’t see Burrito display for quite a while after the chimps first arrived. It’s hard to imagine that these days, since we see him showing us who’s in charge many times a day! It’s so amazing to see him feel comfortable and confident enough to do what he’s supposed to do

Another behavior that reminds us of how much we need to work on getting all the other chimpanzees out that are still languishing in tiny cages and can’t even take a step, much less do such beautiful displaying. SO GREAT to see Burrito “being a chimp!” Also so glad the staff, who worked so tirelessly, and everyone who helped, made it possible for the outdoor enclosure to be done in time for the chimps to enjoy good weather.

Isn’t it heart breaking to think that for 25 years Burrito was unable to do this strutting? Wonderful to see him coming into his own!

Shelly K thank you so much for Karen’s birthday wishes! We were away for a few days over that time so did not respond earlier.

A washer/dryer report: We have about half of the funds we need. So GOOD work! Let’s push a little harder and a little longer and get the rest of the money.

Welcome back Margaret and Karen ~ we miss your blogs when you’re gone. Hope you were away for fun reasons and we’re glad you’re back 🙂

When you have time to scroll through the previous blogs, I know the other *”regular bloggers” sent Karen Happy Birthday wishes as well!

Okay, folks, what shall we name our little community? “Regular bloggers” just doesn’t have that great of a ring to it. Chimp Champ may sound a little bit juvenile (and may already be “taken”), Chimpaholic’s doesn’t seem to have the dignity that the Cle Elum Seven deserve……People for Primates sounds sort of corporate……Sanctuary Saints may be sort of indulgent….what about something like Northwest Chimp Chap’s….or Cle Elum Chimp Chatters (or “CCC’s”)?

Burrito, You are definitely “Da Man!” Thank you for that video. It is good to see him acting like a regular chimp with enough room to strut his stuff.

Shelly K. I like the last one Cle Elum Chimp Chatters. What do the others think.

No sound came through on the video but in my head I heard “Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a woman’s man: no time to talk.”

No sound at this end either but I agree with Mo. You have the lyrics right in your head. I like the little dance step he threw in, too.
I look forward to this blog everyday. It starts my day with a smile and a laugh and ends my day with warm fuzzies. Good night sweet babies.

This video is SO FUN to watch!! I just can’t stop smiling & watching it over and over again! As Denice said, you are da man, Burrito!! So wonderful to see that he is taking to his role as the big male of this group!! And I agree with Mo, my first thought when watching this was John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever! Thank you so much for the video!

Hi Shelly & Jeani ~ I like the last one too….Cle Elum Chimp Chatters (CCC’s)!! That sounds great! Much better than “regular bloggers”. 🙂

  19. Shelly Knapp says

    August 31, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Jeani and Audrey ~ maybe if we initiate it, it will catch on, and if not, that’s okay, too 🙂 When we want to speak with the regular bloggers, we can write CCC’s and in parenthesis (regular bloggers) until it either catches on & we only write “CCC’s” or drops off due to lack of interest.

This certainly isn’t to discriminate against folks who blog once in a great while, or new bloggers, just that there seems to be sort of a core group who blog often 🙂

CCC’s (regular bloggers) ~ let us know what you think!
