Field Roast

The Waning Days of Summer

September 15, 2017 by J.B.

We’ve reached the time of year where the days are still warm but the mornings are cold enough to remind you that summer’s days are numbered. When I arrived at the chimp house this morning I had trouble finding Negra. After calling her name a few times, she poked her head out of this mountain of blankets in the Greenhouse just long enough to greet me with a few soft grunts.

Before long, a breeze had cleared out the wildfire smoke that had settled overnight and things began to warm up. Jody and the gang took to the hill to enjoy some sunshine.

The chimps had a surprise treat at lunchtime. Volunteer Patti brought watermelon and Field Roast veggie dogs so that the chimps and their caregivers could have an End of Summer party.

Foxie was still on the hill with Jody when lunch was brought out. When she came back and saw what was on the tray, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Without context, the behaviors and body language  of fear and excitement can be difficult to distinguish in chimpanzees. Foxie grimaced, baring all of her teeth, and sought reassurance from the other chimps and her caregivers. When chimpanzees are overwhelmed with emotion, good or bad, they seek comfort in their friends.

It was also Patti’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Patti!). We wholeheartedly endorse this idea of bring food to us on your birthday, Patti, and hope that it is the beginning of a new trend wherein anyone who has a birthday brings us lunch.

Even party lunches have to end with bags of primate chow, lest we upset The Queen. By lunch, Negra had shed all of her blankets except for the bare minimum needed to maintain a sense of comfort and security.

Chimps nibble on certain foods, while other foods are almost always stuffed into their mouths as though they are trying to set a Guinness record. Primate chow makes excellent wadge material and the chimps often chew it into a thick paste and spit it back into their hand periodically to admire their handiwork. Missy has additional reasons for stuffing her face with chow – it’s much harder for Negra to steal pieces out of her mouth than it would be if they were still in the bag…

Normally the humans around here lament the end of summer but this year feels different. It’s been hot and dry and smokey for too long. We’re looking forward to some gray, rainy days and the opportunity to throw on an extra blanket or two.

Fun on the 4th

July 4, 2015 by Diana

What a day! The chimpanzees had a terrific 4th of July, starting with a party in the morning, set up by caregiver volunteers Patti and Connie and new staff member Anna.

Here are just a few party photo selections.

Jamie managed to get both of the piñatas:

But she shared with Missy:

After we finished cleaning the playroom, Patti and Connie put some ice and pomegranate juice in the pool. Jamie dragged the pool around with her as she foraged for the kale that was also thrown about the room, then she and Jody settled in for some ice eating, with other chimps coming by once in a while. Jamie would pick up the ice with her hands, put it in her mouth, dry off her hands, then repeat.

Today was our first summer visit day, led by J.B., so we put out a forage on the hill for lunch that included pea shoots from the sanctuary garden, harvested by caregiver volunteer Denice who dropped by just to say hello and do a little gardening. The pea shoots were a hit, as was the corn. It was another hot day, so most of the chimps gathered food from the hill and brought it in to the cooler greenhouse for leisurely snacking.

It wasn’t long before Jamie wanted to go back out on the hill to explore and look for more food, and she asked me to tag along after I put on her new pair of favorite boots.

She explored the hill as though it were an obstacle course, definitely appreciating the freedom she is able to have in her sanctuary home:

This is the new shaky bridge that connects the two towers:

Meanwhile, Burrito took a nap in the playroom:

Dinner included a pretty special treat for everyone – Field Roast frankfurters!

Foxie:

Missy:

I didn’t get any good photos of Negra today, but maybe that’s okay, since she was the star of yesterday’s blog post.

We hope you all have a great and safe 4th of July!

Happy 4th!

July 4, 2014 by J.B.

Volunteers Patti, Lynn, and Andrew put together a great feast for the chimps’ 4th of July celebration. It all started with a lunch forage on the hill. Then for dinner, they had corn, potato salad, watermelon, and Field Roast veggie dogs in the greenhouse. Throw in a couple of pinatas and some inappropriately dressed troll dolls and you’ve got a real 4th of July party! You should have heard the food squeaking and screaming as we were setting up the forage in the greenhouse.

what to do with all that money you saved on Black Friday

November 29, 2013 by Diana

Hopefully you all saw the Thanksgiving blog post yesterday with the video full of food squeaking that included Burrito inhaling a piece of Celebration Roast made by our friends at Field Roast.

For most Americans, now that the big feast is behind us, it’s the dreaded or celebrated Black Friday, the day that shoppers everywhere are searching for the best deals, and non-shoppers are tucked away in their homes avoiding the madness (maybe some of them doing some secret shopping online).

Pal Candy CaneLucky for all of you, we have a way for everyone to feel good about today – join our Holiday Pal fundraising contest!

Your donations literally put the food on the table for the chimpanzees (okay, maybe it’s not really a table, but you know what I mean), and we particularly rely on monthly donations to keep the bills paid and keep us inspired to do more, so please consider the Alpha Pal or Best Friends Pal donation levels.

Right now Foxie is ahead in the Pal fundraising, but that could change at any minute. Keep updated by watching the photos fill up the chimps’ candy canes!

You can become a Pal online, send us a check, or even give us a call (509-699-0728). I’ll personally take your donation over the phone today – there’s no way I’m facing any shopping crowds, so I’ll just be sitting here in the office with the phone waiting for you to call.

If you’re still looking for shopping deals, Zazzle is offering 60% off calendars (and a bunch of other sales), so you can pick up your 2014 Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest calendar for a bargain price. You may as well get a few for gifts. Just visit the CSNW Zazzle store, get your shopping fix by selecting lots of items, and enter the promocode: BLKFRIZAZZLE when you check out. Let us know what you think about the calendar this year!

2014 calendars

Hang in there, and don’t forget that you can always come visit the blog to watch videos and see photos of the chimps to remind you of your primate family at a distance and take your mind off of shopping or any other holiday stress. The chimps are here for you because you are there for them.

Thanksgiving 2012, Pt. 2

November 24, 2012 by J.B.

A few more photos from Thanksgiving day at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest…

Jody enjoyed the sweet potatoes:

Burrito tried to get every last bite of cranberries out of his cup and ended up coloring his face red:

Negra ate her Field Roast Grain Meat in the comfort of a nest:

Speaking of nests, the chimps made some nice ones after their big meal:

Annie was the big winner of the day. She was the only one who noticed that there were nuts and seeds in the decorations, so she quietly gathered them all before anyone else caught on. She also got the Thanksgiving pinata.

You know how can you tell when Foxie is happy with her food? She rubs her toes together.

It’s not hard to tell when Missy is having fun:

Holiday celebration with the Cle Elum Seven

December 25, 2008 by Diana

Happy Holidays from the Cle Elum Seven. They thank you for all of the gifts, wishes, and support! It was a great day full of gifts, goodies and gratitude. Lots of photographic proof below:

Burrito with gift bag

Foxie, a blur with her new big pink-haired troll

and with her special Mrs. Claus troll

Jamie investigating a purse full of gifts

Jody deciding that the decorations are as much fun as the toys

plus you can wear them!

Negra in Christmas sun – it was sunny all day!

Annie with handfuls of Field Roast and mashed potatoes

Jody getting full on mashed potatoes, carrots and celery

Missy with a cup full of cranberry sauce and a piece of Field Roast

Negra, from behind, with Field Roast

Burrito loves mashed potatoes!

And watching their new TV!!! We showed them “all about chimpanzees” Burrito was mesmerized. He watched it about seven times.

Jody and Foxie were also really interested. Here’s Jody’s reaction
