Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest

Fleeting Moments

December 29, 2018 by Diana

This morning the sanctuary was encased in a thin layer of delicate ice.

Here’s Annie taking in the scenery:

Each tiny twig and blade of grass seemed to have suddenly discovered an independence, briefly standing on it’s own, separated from the whole:

It was clear this was going to be a very temporary state – a moment that vanished so quickly the shutter of the camera was scarcely fast enough to capture it.

The air turned warmer and the icicles began to disappear one drop at a time. As I walked around the perimeter of the chimpanzees’ outdoor habitat, I could hear cracking all around me as the trees shrugged off their icy coats.

After taking in the scene, Annie quickly decided to partake in the moment before it was gone.

Soon the sun stood boldly in its place in the sky and transformed the landscape.

Still, in the places that stubbornly hid from the sun, the ice-covered snow remained.

Missy realized that she didn’t need to venture outside herself, she could instead request that I gather handfuls of the delicacy for her.

A lesson for us all, as another year comes to end (a lesson that I’m in need of remembering): appreciate what the day has to offer and enjoy the fleeting moments before they disappear.

Speaking of fleeting moments – we are just days away from December 31st and the end of the huge year-end matching challenge! I don’t know if you’ve looked recently – we are now less than $40,000 away from reaching the goal.

I honestly am not sure what is going to happen. Can we actually reach that lofty goal?! This is where I turn towards you all and ask that question!

Happy Birthday, Tracy!

December 29, 2018 by Katelyn

Yippee!! It’s our good friend Tracy Headley’s birthday today and being the loving soul she is, she is celebrating by sponsoring a day of sanctuary for her chimpanzee friends!

“Celebrating my CSNW family on my birthday. You make every day a little better.”

We’re so lucky to have you as part of our chimpanzee family, Tracy! We’d say you make the world a little better each day just by being in it. Thank you so much for all you do for the chimps. We hope this is the best birthday yet!

The Many Uses of Snow

December 27, 2018 by Elizabeth

Jamie’s been in a bit of a mood today. She spent much of the morning pelting unsuspecting humans with snow. Eventually, though, she happily settled down in a huge wrapping paper nest and decided she’d rather eat snow than throw it (much to the humans’ relief).

In memory of Bill Clark

December 27, 2018 by Katelyn

Our truly lovely friend, Shelley Winfrey, sponsored this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in memory of her dad, Bill Clark. We are so touched, Shelley, that you choose to honor your dad by adding to the chimpanzees’ lives in his name. We’re sending you and your family all the good thoughts for a day filled with love, comfort and joyful memories. From our hearts, thank you for all you do for these amazing chimpanzees!

Gifts

December 26, 2018 by Anna

The day after Christmas is the best day to relax and enjoy your gifts!

Speaking of gifts! Did you hear the big news yet??

Here’s a direct quote from Diana:
“Now, with less than a week left in 2018, our community (that’s YOU) has blown us away with your generosity. We have received hundreds of donations online and in the mail. In the last few days, Vicki Fagerlee made a $15,000 donation AND a second long-time supporter of the sanctuary has donated… $110,000!!!”

Check out our updated donation thermometer below and spread the word so we can reach our end or year goal and kick off our next building phase ASAP! Here’s where you can donate to help BRING THEM HOME!!

In memory of Susan Olson

December 25, 2018 by Katelyn

Our second day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees was sponsored by Jordan Bower in memory of her mom, Susan Olson. Jordan shared this very touching message about her generous gift:

“It is during the holidays that I miss my mom the most. Her greatest gift to me was to impart the love and respect she had for animals. She also loved to give gifts. I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor her memory on Christmas Day than to sponsor a day for my 7 favorite animals on the planet! Thank you for all that you do to give these 7 souls peace and sanctuary every day. Happy Holidays.”

Jordan, we’re so touched that you would honor your mom in this way. We’re sending you all the good thoughts and hope this season also brings you comfort, peace and love-filled memories. Thank you so much for this special gift for the chimps.

Christmas Eve!!

December 24, 2018 by Kelsi

Christmas Eve is the most exciting time of the year. There is so much anticipation built up, and Christmas is only one sleep away! I think the chimps have been pretty excited the past couple days and are getting a little restless for the Christmas party! So, that is why today we tried extra hard to keep the chimps (Jamie) very busy. Jamie had her normal routine of laying on a barrel to supervise chimps and/or humans (mostly humans), make her caregivers put her favorite boots on, build her nests, play a little chase, and monitor the cleaning. After cleaning the Playroom we put out fire hose knots as some daytime enrichment and I stuffed Jamie’s folio with a few crayons, some paper, and a book. Well, let’s just say Jamie has been very busy, or at least for most of the day! Later she needed a nap, nestled around her books, fire hose knots incorporated in her nest, and a boot tucked in her pelvic pocket for safe keeping!
