Sounds of Sanctuary

December 30, 2013 by Lisa

Although it is true that chimpanzees are often much more quiet than one might assume based on experience with them in the media, chimpanzees can also be quite loud when expressing themselves, given the right circumstances. As a matter of fact, the daily routine of sanctuary life is accompanied by sounds that a caregiver comes to rely on.

When I arrive at the chimp house in the morning the chimpanzees are often still sleeping, or enjoying a quiet morning. Not soon after though, Burrito usually makes some noise in the front rooms. Perhaps he’s letting everyone know that the day is about to begin? At any rate, the morning for caregivers consists of breakfast making with the blender whirring in the kitchen and the sounds of a chimpanzee community getting ready for the day. Burrito’s way of greeting the day is certainly unmistakable.

Meal times usually involve food grunts, squeaks and, of course, some chewing. The rest of the day can run the gamut. When the mood takes them the chimpanzees will spend time grooming together, playing, or occasionally engaged in aggressive displays and each of these activities are often attended by distinct chimpanzee vocalizations. To get a feel for what I’m talking about check out today’s video and make sure to have your volume turned up and your listening ears on!

The Wonder of the Season

December 26, 2013 by Diana

For Burrito, the wonder of Christmas includes Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s traditional hanging (and therefore spinning) Christmas tree. Just see the earnest look on his face in the photo below:

Not surprisingly, the reason he is so enamored with this tradition is because it involves food. Today we stuffed the tree with mini-bananas and coconut covered dates. Jamie monopolized the tree in the beginning.

Missy, being Missy, tried a more daring approach

Once Burrito thought it was okay with Jamie to approach, he joined her in the tree worshiping

and spinning

Later, someone decided to pull the tree up onto the catwalk, which provided some browsing – the chimpanzees like to eat the pine needles too, making the whole tree a treat!

Happy Birthday, Laurel!

December 25, 2013 by Katelyn

A Christmas day of sanctuary was sponsored by Laurel Hecht! Today is Laurel’s birthday and in the true spirit of giving, she chose to celebrate by giving a special day to the chimpanzees. Laurel, what a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you so much and from all of us here at CSNW, we wish you the happiest of days (enter pant hoots and food squeaks here)!

The chimpanzees are waking up to a bustling chimp house this morning as we prepare for all the holiday festivities so be sure to check back later today to join in the celebration!

Nothing To See Here

December 22, 2013 by Elizabeth

Posting to the blog is one of my favorite job duties. I love sharing stories, photos, or videos of the chimpanzees, because someone is almost always doing something funny, endearing, impressive, or otherwise interesting. But capturing these moments on camera can be a challenge.

I just came across a series of photos Diana took a couple of weeks ago of Foxie and Burrito playing. The series perfectly illustrates our daily struggles trying to get photos of the chimpanzees for the blog. When we witness moments like this, we run and grab the camera.

But as soon as the chimps catch sight of the photographer, whatever blog-worthy thing they were doing often comes screeching to a halt, as though it never happened.

The Scavenger

December 16, 2013 by Elizabeth

Chimpanzees are natural foragers, but Burrito also has a little bit of scavenger in him. He can often be found hours after a meal prowling the area for any bits of food the other chimps may have overlooked. Today shortly before lunch, he found a peanut that had been missed at breakfast. A single peanut may not seem like much, but for the guy who lives for food, it’s big news.

Let the sun shine

December 15, 2013 by Lisa

The sky is blue and all the leaves are, well, on the ground, but the sun is warmish and the wind is certainly not freezing today. In fact, if I didn’t know better I might be convinced that the worst that winter had to offer was on it’s way out and Spring was just around the corner! Sadly, I realize that this is not the case but that’s not going to ruin such a delightfully warm day in the middle of this otherwise frozen wasteland for me. And while it’s just a little too blustery for the chimpanzees’ taste I can tell that the spirit of Spring is affecting them as well since everyone (including the boss) is full of fun and play today!

Friendship

December 6, 2013 by J.B.

Missy and Annie may get all the attention, but there’s another friendship amongst the Cle Elum Seven that’s just as important.

As you may know, Burrito could use a little help navigating the politics of chimpanzee society. Consider his life before to coming to the sanctuary: He was born in a lab, raised as a pet, forced to perform in a circus, and then locked away for twenty years for use in hepatitis research. Can you imagine living the majority of your first 25 years on earth either alone or with a different species? Can you imagine how terrifying it would be to suddenly be thrust into a group of your own kind, only to realize that they are playing by a rule book that no one ever bothered to show you?

Thankfully, Burrito has found a good friend in Foxie. In quiet times, she’s a playful companion. When the going gets tough, she reassures him and plays peacemaker with the rest of the group. And when he is scared, she comforts him.

Burrito has all the instincts of a tough guy, but none of experience to back it up. Lucky for him he has a 97-pound girl and her troll dolls on his side.
