Annie

Negra playing chase

September 9, 2014 by Debbie

As many of you know, Negra isn’t the most active chimp. Her favorite activity is curling up in a nice big nest with a blanket over her head (second only to eating night bags!) Today, Diana got a special treat when Negra decided to play chase with her. Of course, Neggie’s version of chase was basically moving from one door to another door that is about five feet away — meanwhile Diana had to run all the way through the kitchen and to the other side of the building to meet her. This went on for a few rounds and I was wondering what was going on, but figured Diana was playing chase with Foxie or Missy, who are both known for their playfulness. But no, it was Negra! So I rushed to grab the camera, and only got the last bit of their chase bout. Annie got Negra’s attention and ran around with her for a little bit, which was also a treat to see. We love seeing the chimpanzees come out of their shells—even six years after they first arrived they still continue to surprise us.

Annie, believe it or not, is turning 40 tomorrow! I’m a little late on this request, but if you’re interested in sending Annie a few (belated) birthday gifts, check out our Amazon wishlist. I added some of the toys she likes the most (and have worn out, so we’d like some new ones!) plus there’s plenty of other supplies we need to keep Annie and the rest of the Cle Elum Seven living in a clean home and happy as can be. Based on the video above, I’d like to think we do a pretty good job at giving these deserving chimpanzees the best life possible. 🙂

We’ve got a fun party planned for Annie tomorrow, but here’s a picture of her to tide you over until then!

Cowboy Party

September 6, 2014 by Elizabeth

What’s one way to make seven chimpanzees awfully happy? Throw a spontaneous party. Supporter Lisa Stuverud sent us a box of decorations and enrichment for a cowboy party (and of course we already had dozens of cowboy boots thanks to Jamie’s obsession), so we had everything we needed for a good time.

Jamie was the first into the greenhouse, and she was throwing back her first drink before most of the others even made it out the door.

She checked high and low for hidden treats. Here she’s getting ready to use a fire hose to swing up into one of the windowsills where we often hide food:

Negra went through several of these boot bags filled with shredded paper searching for sunflower seeds.

Missy:

Burrito’s strategy was simple: to find as many pieces of chow as one man could hold.

Annie and Foxie

September 5, 2014 by Debbie

Foxie and Annie both have a habit of getting mouthfuls of water and holding it for awhile. Annie sometimes uses the water later to wash her face, and Foxie tends to just take her time to slurp. Today they happened to both have mouthfuls of water, while in the playroom, and while looking at each other. They look like they’re having some kind of stand off.

web_annie_foxie_mouthful_water_look_at_each_other_pr_dm_IMG_3690

Then Annie started to groom Foxie (they still had their mouths full) briefly.

web_annie_foxie_mouthful_water_groom_pr_dm_IMG_3691

And Foxie looked through some enrichment, testing out the trolls that were in front of her.

Good old summertime days

September 3, 2014 by Katelyn

Missy and Annie are usually found on the go. Running, leaping, laughing, wrestling, and more running every chance they get. But with the first sudden hints of autumn in the air, I caught them both taking advantage of the lingering end-of-summer days and the warmth of the greenhouse.

Missy, just being her cool self:

web_missy_sit_hold_firehose_kd_IMG_3300

And right next to Missy, her best friend, Annie, of course. Relaxing in classic Annie style:

These feet!!

web_annie_feet_kd_IMG_3291

Unbelievably, we will be celebrating this beautiful chimpanzee woman’s 40th birthday on September 10th! Maybe she is resting up for the big party.

Mixing it up a bit

August 25, 2014 by Keri

Many folks have come to know the chimpanzees and their special interests. For instance, Foxie and her love of troll and dora dolls, Jamie and her love of boots and Negra and her love of nesting with a lot of blankets. Well, today, the chimpanzees decided to mix things up a bit.

Annie is usually shy in front of the camera, but not today. Here she is blowing bubbles.
web_Annie_closeup_blow_bubbles_caging_lick_interaction_caregiver_GH_kh_IMG_2511

Then she licked the bubbles,
web_Annie_lick_bubbles_off_caging_GH_kh_IMG_2514

and then blew more bubbles,
web_Annie_closeup_blow_bubbles_caging_interact_caregiver_GH_kh_IMG_2516

and even more bubbles.
web_Annie_blow_bubbles_on_caging_closeup_GH_kh_IMG_2517

Foxie, who can usually be found with a troll or dora doll had one of Burrito’s favorite toys in her mouth.
web_Foxie_toy_in_mouth_fish_GH_kh_IMG_2553

Jamie usually lets us know when we pick out the right boot she wants us to wear for walking around Young’s Hill. Today she did not seem content with just one boot. After I showed her each boot in her boot bin, she continued to stomp on the second story of the playroom floor and motion toward her bin of boots. Turns out she wanted two boots not just one!

And finally, while cleaning the Playroom, we discovered an unusually large nest of blankets in Negra’s favorite nesting spot. Thinking that it was a little bit on the large side, we decided to count the number of blankets and found that she had made her nest with 31 blankets!! Throughout the course of a day, we place a total of 60 blankets in the Playroom, Greenhouse and Front Rooms, so a 31 blanket nest is quite large and probably quite comfortable. I wonder how many blankets she will use to build tonight’s nest. Unfortunately, I did not think to take a photo, but thought I would share that with you.

Everyone Loves Tomatoes

August 17, 2014 by Keri

There’s no denying Missy’s love of tomatoes, as Diana mentioned in her blog post recently, but today, all of the chimpanzees showed their love for Missy’s favorite food.

As soon as caregiver Katelyn walked into the garden, Missy was quick to get in position for Katelyn to serve her.

web_Missy_hang_window_tomatoes_PR_kh_IMG_2840

Jamie quickly joined Missy at the window directly above where the plants are growing to get her share.

web_Missy_Jamie_look_out_window_tomato_PR_kh_IMG_2844

Foxie realized what was happening and joined Missy and Jamie.

web_Jamie_Missy_Foxie_hang_window_tomato_PR_kh_IMG_2846

It quickly became apparent to Katelyn that there was not enough room left in the window for the other chimpanzees. So, she moved over to the barn doors to serve the tomatoes. It didn’t take long for Negra, who was sleeping on the catwalk right above the window overlooking the plants, to climb down to get some tomatoes as well.

web_Negra_Foxie_Jamie_barn_doors_interact_KD_food_tomato_PR_kh_IMG_2849

Jody approached the barn doors to join in on the tomato fun with Negra on her left and Foxie on her right.

web_Negra_Jody_Foxie_barn_doors_tomato_interact_KD_PR_kh_IMG_2850

As soon as Burrito and Annie realized Katelyn was serving tomatoes by the barn doors, they quickly joined the party. But, somehow they managed to avoid the camera and I am left with no photographic evidence of them eating any of the tomatoes (although I promise you, I saw tomatoes in their mouths).
