Anna

A selection

June 28, 2017 by Anna

Each day, caregivers put out carefully selected enrichment items into the enclosures for the chimpanzees to enjoy. Objects like clothing, crayons, magazines, paper, and kids toys are placed around to try and peak the chimps’ interests (or sometimes to just give them something to throw). There are two types of enrichment items that are an absolute requirement for each enclosure: Foxie’s dolls and Jamie’s boots. No area at the sanctuary is fully enriched without at least one cowboy boot and a Dora or troll doll.

A new friend for the chimps!

June 27, 2017 by Anna

Last week we welcomed our new part-time staff caregiver Kelsi to the sanctuary! She has been busy learning the daily routine around here and is now getting to know the chimps!

This afternoon Burrito was more than happy to demonstrate proper chase protocol for her:

And how to give a good (and safe) back rub:

And boss Jamie taught Kelsi how to model new cowboy boots for her. Note that Jamie is sitting comfortably in the shade, while Kelsi knows her place in the direct sun:

Keep an eye out in the next couple weeks for Kelsi’s own blog posts as she starts writing about her adventures in care giving at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest!

Burrito falls asleep

June 21, 2017 by Anna

Not even the most energetic, chaos driven chimpanzee can resist napping in the warm sun and gentle breeze of the greenhouse.

Jody’s eyes

June 20, 2017 by Anna

Jody’s eyes are framed by her distinct heart shaped brow ridge. This ridge has little extra wrinkles which make it all the more pronounced. Her eyes are also a bit closer together than some of the other chimps. These characteristics combine to give her an intensely earnest expression. Sometimes she looks a bit permanently surprised. There is no ignoring her beauty.

Perfectly ordinary days

June 17, 2017 by Anna

It has taken awhile, but I certainly do know it now – the most wonderful gift I had, the gift I finally learned to cherish above all else, was the gift of all those perfectly ordinary days.

More Negra!

June 14, 2017 by Anna

I think today we all needed to see some more photos of Negra celebrating her birthday (photos all taken yesterday on her big day).

This was her birthday dinner: Field roast sliders with sweet potato fries, sparkling cider and wild roses. We very rarely give the chimpanzees bread, but we break that rule for some holidays because Negra LOVES bread!

The birthday girl finishing up her dinner forage:

Negra’s 44th birthday party!

June 13, 2017 by Anna

Fresh coconut was a hot commodity for the royal birthday breakfast forage this morning. Tonight we continue the celebration with vegan Field Roast sliders, sweet potato fries, and sparkling cider! Here’s to Negra on her 44th birthday and the 9th year anniversary of the chimpanzees’ arrival at the sanctuary!

Thanks to all who helped make it such a special day!
