Identifying Gordo

October 6, 2023 by Anna

Today I wanted to continue my chimp ID series that I started on Wednesday. Above you can watch the Gordo video I made to help trainees get to know his physical features a little bit better. Gordo is smaller than the other male members of his group. He has a white beard that covers lighter skin on his chin and mouth. His eyes are slightly closer together (and a little watery) and his face often has a bit of a “smirk” on it. He is also missing a toe on his right foot.   After you watch the above video, what features might you use to identify Gordo?

I am able to identify Gordon by the very distinctive shape of his face. I like that you termed it a smirk, that describes it quite well.

For me, it’s the smirk (which I see as more of a pleasant smile) and the way his footsteps land on his heels, with his toes slightly in the air.
His gray patch on the back isn’t as pronounced as Cy’s.
I don’t see him move bipedally as often, but when I do, I think he has a “swimmer’s body”–he’s broad at the shoulders, trim at the waist.
    A cute little dude!

I like his shoulder hair tuft, like he has a little angel wing.:revolving_hearts:

Hi Anna! I like the way your videos focus on just the person, singularly, no distractions. It’s an interesting perspective and very sweet, too. In day-to-day videos my eyes are always roaming about try ing to watch everyone, focusing on who is who and what they are doing within the group. So nice to be able to really look at and quietly (and both Cy and Gordo are so quiet, sweet and quiet, in these clips!) study these boys faces and mannerisms like this. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your ID series and I am looking forward to what’s next!

Not sure how I ID this handsome guy. I guess it is his close set eyes as you pointed out. And face/expressions stand out most times. Gordo seems to be lovably goofy! And I mean that in the best way.

Fantastic Gorditos and how to identify them: I would start with his beard, and the recurrently foofy way that he wears his hair. Gordo’s bears a faint resemblance to younger vers

versions of Henry Fonda and Robert Redford. Mostly Just can pick out Gord in a owd by his bunny hop and have s occupancy of boxes. Perhaps Foxie from next door finds hiim worth the effort to cast her eyes his ways.

I agree with Tobin — it’s the bunny hop for me that I find so identifiable and adorable. Makes me chuckle every time I see him doing it. I find him really charming!

When the lucky six arrived I was very intimidated and overwhelmed thinking I would never ever be able to identify each individual. But it turned out to be so easy! They are all so distinctive. Now I can’t say I can identify anybody when they’re walking away from the camera. As I’ve said before I do better with faces than with backsides. As a caregiver who needs to know the location and identity of every chimp before closing off an area to be cleaned, they’ll have to be familiar with backsides and side views. Or just by the way they walk and carry themselves. That is quite an art! Gosh, when viewing the chimps from the security videos you would even have to be able to identify them from above!

I was no help at all in how to identify Gordo!

his cute skip is what stood out for me, and he seems a bit shy when eating, or is that a common chimp charactoristic?

Definitely bunny hops and boxes for me!

For me it is the way he resembles a teddy bear.
No one else is as fluffy over the whole body.
    He ‘looks’ very cuddly.
