It has been a beautiful day here in Cle Elum and we took full advantage of it with lunch forages for both groups! Forages are a great time to get creative and use up any last bits of produce that we have leftover in the fridge from previous meals. Today, for example, Negra’s group had a lunch forage that consisted of leftover mini sweet peppers, oranges, two leftover grapefruits, baby iceberg lettuce, leftover corn, and primate chow.
Despite the variety in today’s lunch forage, Negra focused on one of her favorites: corn. When she came back into the greenhouse I thought she had found one full and one half ear of corn, but when I looked closer I noticed that she had two half ears and one full ear of corn! Sneaky! (Side note: does no one else find it odd that we refer to corn as ears?)
I realized that I have quite a bit of footage on my phone of Negra enjoying corn- and thus the idea for today’s blog! I hope you enjoy the three minute compilation of Negra enjoying one of her favorite foods. 🙂

Oh, Grace! Thanks for making my day! With all the lip-smacking and kernel-crunching it was hard to keep from giggling out loud! I’ll have to try that 2-ears in the mouth at the same while walking time tactic, and also have never taken corn to bed with me like Neggie, but I’m sure she has it just right on how to make the most of it. Very fun!!

Go away and stop watching me eat my corn, Grace! There is no doubt that Neggie loves her corn! Just like us, the chimps all have their preferences and favorites.

No corn on the belly–sometimrs, in photos and video, I feel like Neggie has lost some weight. Surprised she took that poke at you–maybe she thought you were food peering, and going to try to steal some from her!?
And Foxie….is rubbing her toes together…:kissing_heart:

While I appreciate watching the chimps enjoy their meals and treats, I was a little uncomfortable for Neggie being spied on for such a long time while she enjoyed her lunch. The fact that she turned away a few times and poked out at the camera just showed her discomfort with the invasion of her privacy. They are no longer research specimens but freed primates in their homes with promises from their sponsors and caregivers not to cause them pain or harm. I’ve never heard of Negra spitting or throwing anything at caregivers so I’d just like to give her the same respect and courteous behavior she shows to all. I’m certain you meant no harm and thank you for taking such good care of all the residents at all other times.
Linda C says
As someone who has been following a while, I’m fairly certain that they ask the chimps’ permission before they take most “portrait studio” style photos, and you’ll notice that most of the time, as they did here, if the poke isn’t playful, they stop. They’re respectful of the chimps’ time and peace.

I Finally spotted the JODI LILAC color blanket that I sent a while back! Negra is nesting on it towards the end of the video. I love it. I love that Negra is enjoying it. Even though she’s annoyed at the camera man!
loving and thinking of Jodi… and I will every time I see that blanket!
Linda C says
I love seeing things I’ve sent in neing used, too, Paulette!

Who knew that four whole minutes of Negra eating corn could be so mesmerizing! And to top it off, her deciding to eat in peace in her bed away from prying eyes! Does she eat her corn buttered or as is? Negra is so cool!

“Who knew that four whole minutes of Negra eating corn could be so mesmerizing!”
I know right?!
Now that’s LOVE!
Paulette says
Oh, I just zoomed in on the picture of Negra coming in from the forage. I was surprised she only had one ear of corn. But I see now that she has one ear of corn sideways in her mouth, behind the one sticking out. Too funny!

That Video was lip smacking good !
And I love that swat at the end, No paparazzi please!

From the looks and sounds of it, I doubt that Her Majesty gives a kernel that she is munching “ears” of corn. Still, I hope that the name of this Midwestern delicacy can remain unspoken to some of the inhabitants of the Young’s Hill Metropolitan Area:. I can just hear the alarm calls from a steadfast vegan like Cy upon learning that inconvenient nomenclature.

Unless that was spit…that corn was juicy …….Lip Smacking Good….p…….I remember Missy’s last Birthday ….she did the same thing …..she was down to her last three tomatoes ….Like Neggie she walked away… ……Guess its best not to have prying eyes when your down to your last:grin:

I had a rough weekend and this, THIS, brought me pure joy. I had to zoom in to watch Neggie munching up close. The wind blowing through her hair. All those little kernels on her lips. When she waved you away it seemed like a Jamie move! I’m keeping this video readily available, what a way to brighten my day! Thanks Negra and Grace.
Linda C says
Hope the week is better than the weekend!

The Queen doesn’t miss a single kernel, does she? Seeing Neggie eat her favorite foods and nap on a pile of blankets to hear heart’s content just fills me with so much joy. Such simple pleasures that were robbed from her for so many years.

Love the video and all of the chimps, and I love how you take care of them! And just as an aside, calling it the ear comes from the very old, antiquated word “ahs,” which means husk of corn.
Linda C says
Cool! Thank you!

Negra’s crunching and relishing her ears of corn made me hungry for some!
