Hi, everyone! It’s a *beautiful* Sunday here in Cle Elum and it feels like everyone’s enjoying it. Right now I can see Cy on the security monitors relaxing in the Mezzanine with a new magazine, a few mall walkers walkin’, and Jamie’s group relaxing after a lunch forage on Young’s Hill. For today’s forage we had baked sweet potatoes, mini sweet peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers… And the chimps were so very excited. Baking fruits and veggies might seem like no big deal to us humans, but the chimps (for the most part) love it when they get baked foods. Whether it be the texture change or the natural sweetness that comes from baking a fruit, they get all worked up in the best way.
Speaking of mealtimes, the other day I was sitting with Gordo at dinner and he allowed me to snag a few videos of him eating. If you’re anything like me, it is the bane of your existence when you can hear another human chewing their meals. It’s not logical, I know, but something about it just gives me uncomfortable goosebumps. Having the opportunity to sit and listen to the chimps eat, though, is the best. The humans have talked about it and for some reason most of us feel the same way- listening to the chimps eat with their food grunts, lip smacks, and munchin’ sounds just makes you smile.
You might not believe me and that’s okay, but don’t worry- I’ve compiled a six minute long video of the chimps munchin’ away to try and change your mind. 🙂
P.S: don’t forget that our annual fundraiser is coming up next week! On Friday, September 16th we will be celebrating the chimps at HOOT! 2022! You can read more on the celebration in Diana’s blog post here, but you can still purchase tickets for both in-person and virtual festivities. We will have a live and silent auction, with items so good that some of us caregivers are trying to figure out how to snag them without Diana noticing, and if you sign up for a VIP ticket (for either in-person or virtual) you will be registered to attend an exclusive, virtual tour of the sanctuary! Join us to celebrate the chimps and sanctuary next week! 🙂 See more by clicking here.
P.P.S: As a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit organization, we rely on your support to provide lifetime quality care and sustainable sanctuary for our residents. There are a variety of ways to support us- like helping us reach our goal of being rated a 2022 Great Top-Rated nonprofit by GreatNonprofits! It’s as easy as going here and clicking “Share Your Story”. The humans, and the residents, of CSNW say thanks in advance!
Now, some photos from today’s forage on Young’s Hill! 🙂

When I saw that punny title on youtube, I said, “Oh, Sunday, Punday, Anthony must be on deck ” But it was Grace! They got you in good, Grace!
I am the same way!
I was going to ask why the 7 got roasted sweet potato while the 9 got raw, but I see they were filmed on different days. They even got some Jody-style good growls from Neggie! Popular, indeed!.Thanks, Grace!

Context is everything:. What is annoying when humans display unseemly manners is endearing when enacted by the chimpanzees. It is a privilege to hear Negra emit her food grunts and squeaks. Since people like her don’t utilize language in the same manner that those of us who are far-less evolved are obliged to do, it is beautiful to hear the sound of her gratitude as she savors the taste of her meal.
That, and it seems quite possible that Neggie is enjoying the company of her human dining partner.

Grace, you just earned a soft spot in my heart. A 6.48 minute long video of chewing chimps!? Fantastic! Yes, chimp sounds are the best. Same goes for their chewing facial expressions. I absolutely LOVED this video. (I could watch and listen to a feature length film of happy crunching chimps.) Thanks so much.
Kathy says
I wonder if they have ever offered a food that none of the chimps liked.

sounds like me working on a HOT APPLE PIE…!!!!!!!:grinning:

Grace, I noticed a “bump” on the right side of Annie’s nose !? Anything to worrie about???
And I just LOVE Neggie’s dinosaur grunts, and her very high-pitched “yelps”; I just find that so endearing.
Smacking and chewing are the greatest sounds on earth if they come from Chimp people.
The fact that we do NOT like it in human people shows you how indoctrination works…..
marianne says
I checked some older photo’s of Annie and that “bump” is there too, be it a little smaller ….
Just saying……:kissing_heart:

60 years ago when I was a little girl and my family went to the mountains, my father loved nothing better than to take carrots after dinner for the horses just to hear them eating.
I also love hearing pigs eat, rhinos…
There is just such contentment about it.

It is ridiculous how much joy these wonderful chewing sounds brought to me this morning!? Thank you!

YOUR laugh for the day. sitting on couch watching the video and my husband looks over and asks what I am eating:crazy_face::crazy_face::crazy_face::flag_ca:. thanks for a great video

That’s too funny!

Grace, I agree with everything others have said — what a charming and delightful video! I’ve watched it 3 times and it just gets better each time. I’m sure for the chimps the food gunts and smackings just add to the yumminess. Barbra Streisand once said that “schlurping” sounds make the food taste better. I’m so glad Annie found that little stray bite on her arm so she didn’t miss a morsel. Must say, Gordo’s sweet potato grunts made me chuckle out loud. Thank you for this lovely experience. I’ll watch it many times & enjoy the whole experience even more each time, that I’m sure of!
