Chimpanzees in the mist(er)

July 28, 2022 by Anna

The temperature is hovering around 100 degrees right now in Cle Elum and we all feel it! Luckily, we have many ways to protect the chimpanzees and staff from the extreme elements. In fact, as I type, I can hear the chimps slurping on homemade popsicles that Chad just handed out. Just before lunch we played around with some mister hose attachments to see if anyone was interested. Honey B and Rayne were happy to try it out. I love watching their wild expressions as they try to catch as much water as possible.

Speaking of beating the heat… If I had one wish for the chimps this July, it would be for the amazingly generous donation of that certain portable evaporative cooler that has been hanging out at the top of our Amazon wish list.

Here’s Foxie expending as little energy as possible today:

A few days ago, I inscribed a disparaging comment regarding the Supreme Court of Last Resort which sits in judgment upon this republic. “What planet do the justices live on?:” I asked with regard to their flippant disregard for Scientific data. Apparently, to interpret the logic of their jurisprudence, as the ecological realities of 2022 find no reference in a document written in 1787, corrective action to attend to the present climate can not be allowed.

“No-no-np”, someone objected, stating that the CSNW blog comboxes are intented as a “happy space” upon which to set one’s eyes. Fair enough, then.,

Still, reading today’s blog, and viewing the mercury recording in Cle Elum at the same time, a line written and sung by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders comes to mind, haunting me as it has over the past four decades:

“The Powers that be/they force us to live like we do…”

I adore the mouthy expressions on the chimps being misted trying to get some of that water into their mouths. The whole misting adventure reminds me of being a small child (150 years ago and 150 degrees F) in Southeast Texas when my mother would turn on the garden hose & let me run through it on days like you’re having. In Redmond, WA it’s 93 degrees as I write this and I’m in the shape of a pufferfish! I’m glad to see the chimps being treated so well — of course they are!

I was thinking that Rayne looked as though she would enjoy a run through the sptinkler.

Ha ha ha Anna. Loved your headline (for a minute I thought this post might be from Anthony).

It sure has been hot. Everywhere it seems. If only the rest of us had the best caregivers in the world tending to us, keeping us cool, misted, and happy! That nozzle is a brilliant idea! It’s fun seeing how both Honey B and Rayne enjoy the cooling effect but they are also having fun sipping it. Thanks for capturing this on video.

Did anyone else enjoy your spa mist treatment?

I would love to help you buy the cooler, but its a bit pricy for me alone. If 50 people could donate $40 each, it coukd be delivered tomorrow.

As for climate change, I ran an atmospheric observatory at the South Pole in 1988/89. We knew what was happening, and what was going to happen. Al Gore came to visit, but nobody else cared. You had decades to care and now it’s too late.

Yes! An excellent idea. A quick fundraiser for the “Big Ass Fans Cool-Space 300 Portable Evaporative Cooler” wold be a quick way to purchasethat badboy. Go for it guys!

Kathleen, what a fabulous idea!! I just wrote Diana an email about seeding it with a donation so we’ll see what this might turn into. I’d not have thought of it without your suggestion, so many thanks for the creative suggestion!!!

I just sent $40 earmarked for the cooler! If it doesn’t work then can use it for whatever they need. Fingers crossed!
