As you might imagine, it’s been an extra, extra busy day in the chimp house! Hopefully you’ve had a chance to check out the very endearing and very encouraging update Diana and J.B. shared earlier today of Burrito’s continued progress toward healing from the recent rattlesnake bite he received. We will continue to closely monitor him for potential complications over the next several days, so while he isn’t out of the woods yet, each day that passes with his steady progress allows us to breathe a little deeper.
As we mentioned earlier today, many of you have been asking how you can help and so we’ve added a medical fund to our upcoming HOOT! 2020 online auction to help cover the cost of Burrito’s antivenin treatment. We’ve seen your donations coming in these past days in his name and please know how deeply we appreciate your support, in all it’s many and varied forms. The love, support and well wishes that’s been wrapped around Burrito from near and far is felt by us all. And I believe, most importantly, by him. We are profoundly grateful to you for that.
I wasn’t able to capture a dang thing for photos today, but Chad came to the rescue again and has graciously shared photos he captured of these two lovely ladies:
Cute Honey B eating a beet:
Beautiful Jody eating some foraged wild-greens:
I did manage this one a few moments ago. After a full day of visiting and playing with his chimpanzee and human family from his recovery room, working ever so hard at healing, his paper boat emptied of grape snacks, Burrito has tucked himself in and is out for the night:
May we all rest just a little easier as we hold him in our hearts tonight.

Thank you for all you do and especially for the updates. Much love to you all.

“May we all rest just a little easier as we hold him in our hearts tonight.” Amen Katelyn. Amen. Thank you all. Still won’t be breathing fully relaxed until he’s much much better. Will still beam the healing thoughts to him.

Thanks Katelyn for the latest Burrito update. A paper boat of grapes! Nothing better than paper boats filled with goodies. And I just love your birds-eye-view photo of Burrito sleeping (Is that Willy B’s favorite leopard blanket in Burrito’s nest? If it is, I am guessing Willy B knows his favorite possession will help Burrito heal faster.) To all of you, may you get a better nights sleep tonight.
Sweet dreams Mr. B. xoxo

Thank goodness our beautiful boy seems to be getting better. I wondered how much they drink, apart from their smoothies? Did I see a water bottle in J.B’s hand? Love, hugs and prayers for more progress.

hard to guess, since they get water from the Lixit fountains. But I’m guessing they have water for him so that he doesn’t have to get up. And maybe to give any pain meds? Their fruits and veggies give them more.
Katelyn says
Hi Carol, the chimpanzees drink about the same quantities of liquid as we humans do. They have lixits throughout the chimp house to access water whenever they want and occasionally we serve treats of tea or Gatorade. As one of our many preventative health approaches, we are very conservative with the chimpanzees’ sugar intake, even natural sugars such as fruit. In Burrito’s case, or any of the chimpanzees when they are recovering from a procedure, they often receive small amounts of juice or even soda, if it serves as an effective vehicle for getting necessary medication into them or if we simply need to encourage them to hydrate while they recover. I believe the squeeze bottle you see is filled with Gatorade. We posted a video as well of Burrito drinking from a bottle of grape juice that had his medication in it. It can be extremely challenging to get the chimps to take medications – nothing gets past them and we can probably all relate to having to take something that doesn’t taste good, so whatever it takes! 🙂

Thank you for the replies. I knew they would have access to all the water they needed, but apart from one video, I had never seen them drinking water. Well done for giving them the best diet and ensuring they get healthy stuff…..however much they love their treats. I’m sure Burrito will play the sympathy card to get as many paper boats of grapes as he can though!

thanks, Katelyn and Chad!
Still sending prayers Mr B’s way.
Once again, Jojo is the best cover girl ever!
