Thank you, Susan!

January 5, 2014 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Susan Cooper. Susan shared the following thoughts: “I love Sundays. On Sundays I think about things that are truly important to me. Sunday is the day I spend at home, thinking about those I love and taking care of my 5 rescue dogs and our home.”

Susan also shared how moved she was by our recent video about Foxie and the inspiration she provides for us all. It means the world to us when others see how special the chimpanzees are. Thank you so much, Susan, for thinking of Foxie and her chimpanzee family on your special Sundays, and for all you do for animals!

Foxie with tiny trolls

January 4, 2014 by Debbie

It seems Foxie has been the center of our blog posts lately, but that might be because no matter what she is doing she is bright, playful, funny, and can bring a smile to all of our faces. You’ll see what I mean while watching this video:

More love for Connie!

January 4, 2014 by Katelyn

Today was sponsored in honor of Connie Lamm (formerly Connie Robertson) by Mary Neal, who wanted to share what “a wonderful person” Connie is! You may recall that a day of sanctuary was recently sponsored for Connie in honor of her marriage to Bill by her fellow chimp house volunteers. Connie never misses an opportunity to help her chimpanzee and human friends in whatever way she can so it comes as no surprise that the love for her keeps pouring in.

Connie works tirelessly to improve the lives of the chimpanzees in countless ways. From being a volunteer caregiver to keeping the chimpanzees’ refrigerator stocked with produce pick-ups, to helping organize fundraising events and sharing her passion for the sanctuary with everyone she meets.  And we can’t thank her enough!

Mary, thank you so much for honoring Connie in such a generous and thoughtful way!

In Memory of Dr. Mel Richardson

January 3, 2014 by J.B.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Dr. Mel Richardson.

Dr Mel and Gamma

Dr. Mel is and will always be part of the heart and soul of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. He joined the Board of Directors in the spring of 2008, prior to the chimps’ arrival, and was instrumental in developing the philosophy of care that guides us today. He continued to oversee the care of the Cle Elum Seven for the next five and half years with boundless love and unwavering dedication.

During his visits to the sanctuary, Dr. Mel won over the chimpanzees and humans alike with his southern charm. He welcomed phone calls from worried staff at all hours, which he handled with patience and understanding. His calmness and reassurance during uncertain times is something we will always appreciate. And his vast knowledge and decades of experience – from zookeeper to veterinarian to activist – made him one of the most trusted members of the organization.

If his easy smile didn’t immediately win you over, his countless stories surely would. He seemed to have lived multiple lifetimes, soaking up every bit he could, and he never stopped planning for the next adventure or the next opportunity to offer his expert but humble assistance.

Dr. Mel dedicated his life to helping animals, and he was especially committed to seeing formerly abused and neglected captive exotic animals thrive in sanctuaries. Remarkably, the health and happiness of the Cle Elum Seven are but one small part of his amazing legacy. From Rwanda to Cle Elum to Bolivia, he traveled across the globe to help animals in need.

The chimpanzees at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest are fortunate to have an amazing team of veterinarians dedicated to their care, and you can rest assured that they are left in good hands. But we will all feel the void that Dr. Mel has left, as we mourn the loss of a kind, courageous, and compassionate soul.

Thank you, Dr. Mel.

Happy Birthday, Don Young!

January 2, 2014 by Elizabeth

Today we’re celebrating Don Young’s 75th birthday. Don and Karen Young have been endlessly generous in their support of the sanctuary and the Cle Elum Seven. Among many other things, Don and Karen provided the contribution that allowed us to break ground on what is now known as Young’s Hill. Each time the chimpanzees step outside onto their two-acre open air habitat, we feel so thankful to the Youngs for making it happen. See Diana’s blog post from this morning for more on Don and Karen.

Karen sponsored today for the chimps in honor of Don’s birthday, so we threw a lavish party to celebrate. The weather was unseasonably nice today, so first thing this morning we set up parties in the greenhouse and on Young’s Hill. The chimps foraged for coconuts, pineapple, kiwi, beets, Brussels sprouts, sweet potato, and fruit smoothie in Dixie cups.

Although the weather was beautiful for January in Cle Elum, it was still a little cool for Negra, so she chose to stay in the greenhouse:

But everyone else went outside and foraged for breakfast on Young’s Hill:

Burrito gathered some Brussels sprouts:

And Jamie collected some beets:

The real prizes of the morning were the two whole coconuts. Missy quickly found one of them:

and looked for a safe place to enjoy it:

She was soon joined by Jody:

Jody was very happy to find the second coconut a little later:

There was plenty of coconut to go around, and everyone eventually got a chance to enjoy some.

Foxie:

Annie:

We can’t possibly count the ways in which we’re grateful for Karen and Don’s generosity. The Cle Elum Seven wouldn’t enjoy the life they do without them. Happy birthday, Don!

Today is for Don Young

January 2, 2014 by Diana

A giant Happy Birthday to Don Young today! Don’s wife Karen is sponsoring today in honor of Don’s 75th birthday and shared these sentiments: “Happy 75th to my wonderful husband, Don, who has so generously supported my chimp passion so that it is now his passion as well! Here is to you and a chimp party in your honor! Love, Karen.”

The chimpanzees celebrate Don and Karen every day when they step onto Young’s Hill – the two acre habitat that the Youngs helped to fund. They also funded the greenhouse project, the termite mound on Young’s Hill, and contributed generously towards the medical clinic.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest simply wouldn’t be what it is without their help, and we can’t thank them enough.

We’ll be throwing a BIG party for Don today – check back on the blog later for photos, or get the blog posts in your inbox by subscribing – just scroll down on this page below all of the announcements, etc., put your email address in the box below the words, “Subscribe to Blog via Email,” and then click “subscribe.”

In the meantime, watch the video below of the chimpanzees first day on Young’s Hill:

Wild and precious lives

January 1, 2014 by Katelyn

On this New Year’s Day, I would like to share a story with you about my friend, Foxie. As a rule, if we are having an off day about anything we work very hard not to bring it to the chimp house. We are here to make the chimpanzees’ days better and it’s not fair for them to have to deal with anything less than our best. At the same time, we’re human. And chimpanzees, being chimpanzees, are incredibly sensitive to what’s going on around them, and with their caregivers, whether we think we are hiding something or not.

So on this occasion, I had been having a rough day and after spending some time outside returned to the chimp house having “re-collected” myself. I had my back to the chimp area and was working on enrichment when I suddenly heard Foxie blowing raspberries and trying to get my attention. This is normal Foxie behavior when she is trying to get our attention to play or let us know she needs something. When I turned to look at her she appeared to be seeking reassurance, though all the other chimpanzees seemed to be resting peacefully. I walked down the hallway to make sure she was OK, thinking maybe she had dropped a troll, or had been hurt. As soon as I reached her she immediately met me at eye level and gazed intensely into my eyes, looking back and forth to each one. Then she reached her hand out to touch the back of my own and just held it there as she continued to gaze at me, seeming concerned. Not seeing a reason for her to be upset, after reassuring her for awhile I returned to work on enrichment. It didn’t dawn on me until later that day that Foxie had seemed to be offering me reassurance. Somehow, she seemed to read something in me that indicated I had been upset and was checking to make sure I was OK. Of course, I have no way of knowing what Foxie was truly thinking, this is merely my perception. But it seemed so evident.

This is why I am so passionate about what I do, and about what the sanctuary and conservation communities do as a whole. As caregivers we are so fortunate to be able to spend our days making theirs better in any way we can. We are so fortunate to share our lives with these seven amazing chimpanzee people. And they are people to me, just a different culture one might say. I recognize that most of you don’t have the opportunity to know a chimpanzee personally, or to experience a relationship with one. So my intent in sharing this story with you is the hope that you will see how very important and appreciated your support is in helping to provide them with the lives they deserve. To give further insight into how truly special they are.

web_Foxie_close_up_GH_ek_IMG_7013

2013 was an unprecedented year for chimpanzees. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) accepted the recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in favor of phasing out the use of chimpanzees in invasive research and retiring most of them into the Federal Sanctuary System. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) proposed to expand the protection of chimpanzees in captivity under the Endangered Species Act. We’ve learned so much more about personal choices we can make toward helping to ensure the conservation of free-living apes and protecting their environment. And great progress was made in furthering awareness about the use of apes in media and entertainment (check out Eyes on Apes if you would like to learn more about all of these things!).

I look toward 2014 full of gratitude for each one of you who made last year possible. I am honored to play a role with all of you in keeping that momentum going through 2014 and beyond. And not just for all the amazing beings we share this planet with. But for each of you and whatever calls to you, “announcing your place in the family of things.” There is still so much work to be done. And so I offer another quote from my favorite poet, Mary Oliver: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

From all of us at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, we wish you the happiest of new years! And thank you for all you do!!
