Eyes wide shut

August 7, 2013 by Katelyn

The chimpanzees have been feeling pretty snoozy this afternoon. One minute they would be watching us from their comfy nests, and the next they were fast asleep.

And Negra

Maybe they are all resting up in anticipation of the big celebration tomorrow. Foxie turns 37 and the party preparations are under way as I type!

Jamie’s New Shoes

August 5, 2013 by Jennifer

Over the past few months, Jamie has been admiring a specific pair of shoes I have been wearing. The other day I decided to gift her with my shoes. As as soon as I gave them to her, she held them to her chest and hugged them. One of our caregivers, Debbie, asked Jamie if she thought the shoes would fit on her feet. Jamie immediately put the shoes on her feet. They didn’t quite fit, so she modified them by stretching the fabric. She then put them on her hands and made swooshing sounds with the shoes as she moved them across the floor. Jamie is so bright and is a source of amazement to us all!

(While these are not the shoes I gave her, I thought you’d appreciate a few photos of Jamie with her boots.)

I’d also like to thank you for donating items from our Christmas in July wish list. We were overwhelmed with the positive responses. In less than two days, YOU donated all of the items on our list! We are currently reorganizing our office, but we will be sure to post pictures of our office makeover shortly. Also, we apologize if you encountered problems shipping supplies to us. We have resolved the issue with Amazon.

Missy and pea tendrils

August 4, 2013 by Debbie

Today we put out a lunch forage which included peas, as well as the pea shoots and tendrils which the chimps love! Missy gathered some up:

and went to a nice high spot to munch on them. I love the vast space they have on Young’s Hill—this really captures that.

As if that didn’t brighten your day enough, here’s a photo that’s sure to make you laugh of Annie:

Window Play

August 3, 2013 by Diana

Burrito and Debbie had a fun game of chase going this morning, with Debbie running on the outside of the chimp building where the garden is, and Burrito running inside from window to window. At one point in the game, Burrito generously shared a little bit of his water.

Jamie played a bit too, but she mostly wanted Debbie to pick her something from the garden.

Extra photos

August 2, 2013 by Debbie

As you can imagine, we take hundreds of photos of the chimps. Who wouldn’t? They’re so photogenic and a really good lookin’ crew. Sometimes not all of our photos make it to the blog. Today, I found these of each of the chimps taken in the last month or so, but never-before-seen!

Feet

August 1, 2013 by Elizabeth

I love chimpanzee feet.

web_Missy_toes_close_up_GH_ek_IMG_2711

These are Missy’s feet and they carried her through thirty years in lab cages. But that was then. Now Missy’s feet are for sprinting and leaping and tickling and sometimes holding surplus food at mealtime. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
