Jody has been a supporter of the chimpanzees since they arrived from the laboratory in Pennsylvania almost four years ago. Her latest generous act is to sponsor today (her birthday!). Sponsoring a day of sanctuary is a great way to contribute directly to the chimps’ daily care, and we’re so moved by Jody’s thoughtful gift on her own special day. Today is sponsored by Marcia Douthwaite and Marcia’s friends and colleagues at the University of Washington Department of Neurology in loving memory of Marcia’s son, Dane, who passed away a few weeks ago after a long illness. Dane’s birthday would have been celebrated today. Dane and Marcia shared a love for all primates and Marcia says that photos and videos of the Cle Elum Seven brought both of them great joy during Dane’s last few weeks. We’re so touched at this tribute and we’re all thinking of you, Marcia.
Today is Rena Schwartz’s birthday and Melissa Pendleton has sponsored the day in celebration. Love a Chimpanzee Day is a much-beloved CSNW holiday invented by longtime supporter Monica Best. Monica sponsors April 23rd each year in memory of her cat Ozzie and in celebration of these chimpanzees and all chimpanzees. This year, she also wants the holiday to honor Emma, Karen and Don Young’s dog who recently passed away. (April 23rd also happens to be Monica’s birthday – happy birthday, Monica!) We had our official celebration a few days early this year (check out the photos here), but we’re still going to be sure to love the chimps just a little extra today. We may be biased, but we can’t think of a more worthy holiday.
Joan O’Flaherty sponsored today in memory of her parents, Ned and Noreen O’Flaherty. Today was their birthday (same day, two years apart). Ned and Noreen also shared a love for animals and a great concern for environmental and conservation issues, and Joan is certain they would have loved the work of CSNW. Thank you, Joan, for such a thoughtful gift.
Today was sponsored in honor of chimp house volunteer Stephanie Perciful’s birthday by her husband Tim. It is somewhat appropriate that Steph’s birthday falls on this day of love because she is one of the most generous and joyful people you could hope to meet. (Proof: She arrived at the chimp house this morning for her volunteer shift with armfuls of gifts for the chimps and a big smile.) Steph is one of a handful of volunteers who have trained to become caregivers and provide direct care to the chimpanzees, and they just adore her (especially Burrito).

Today is Meg Lunnum’s birthday, and she has chosen to celebrate it by sponsoring today for the chimpanzees. This isn’t Meg’s only act of generosity – she’s been supporting the sanctuary since shortly after the chimps arrived, and she’s currently sponsoring Negra’s care monthly through our Chimpanzee Pal program. Thanks so much to Meg and to all of you who give so generously so we can give the chimps the life they deserve.
